  1. I work Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and i am deeply committed to my career in social work. It comes with its challenges but I’m passionate about the work I do. I also try to take on as much overtime as I can, because it helps me save up for my canoe trips. To make these trips possible, I take a six-month deferred salary leave every two years. I work for 18 months while getting 75% of my salary and after, I take six months off while still receiving that same 75%. It’s not a huge income and it comes with sacrifices, I don’t own a home and I live a pretty minimalist lifestyle with old furniture. It’s a trade-off I’m willing to make as it lets me take extended time off to do what I love, exploring the world, one paddle stroke at a time. These adventures have further strengthened my commitment to a minimalist lifestyle, showing me how little I truly need to be happy. Prioritizing experiences over possessions and meaningful connections over convention has given me a profound sense of freedom and purpose. This perspective shapes not only how I live but also how I now approach each new journey.   2. A year ago, I happened to come across a man on Instagram who has canoed across Canada, the USA, the Yukon River and France. (These trips total a good 19,000km) I sent him ”fan mail” because I am also interested in long-distance canoeing. As the discussions progressed, Martin Trahan (Canada) said that his dream would be to paddle in Finland one day. I told him that he could contact me if he ever decided to come here. It came true in September this year. Martin and I went canoeing through Kolovesi and Linnansaari National Parks and Joutenvesi nature resereve. A total of 8 days and 150 kilometers. We have kept in touch with Martin after the trip and the next slightly longer trip is already on the planning table! But more on that later. J’étais très perplexe alors j’ai insisté pour qu’on me le retire dès le lendemain matin, afin d’infirmer une réelle perte auditive. Après m’avoir retiré le bouchon la perte était toujours là. Immédiatement on m’a prescrit des antiviraux et des stéroïdes oraux. 2 jours plus tard je voyais une ORL qui me confirmait la perte des dites fréquences. On m’a alors parlé de “Perte auditive neuro-sensorielle soudaine” ; causée vraisemblablement par un virus/retrovirus ou un soucis microvasculaire. Cependant la cause ne peut jamais être confirmée. En plus des comprimés, et ce pour mettre toutes les chances de mon côté, la Dre m’a également administré trois injections de cortisone intratimpaniques. Ensuite il fallait attendre 1 mois; laisser la nature faire son travail. Dans certain cas ça s’améliore ou revient complètement. Malheureusement ça ne fut pas mon cas. J’ai alors perdu partiellement l’ouïe de mon oreille gauche, et ce, de façon permanente. La courbe de l’audiogramme s’affaisse vers les 2000 Hertz puis ne remonte pas. Vers les 8k je suis à -80%. La surdité est alors considérée comme légère à modérée.Pour un musicien ça demeure une sacrée claque; surtout quand vient le temps de mixer des hi-hats. La brutalité de l’évènement m’a aussi laissé un acouphène. Je dois avouer que c’est psychologiquement où j’ai eu le plus de mal à m’en remettre. Pas fun tout ça mais je vais désormais bien. J’ai recommencé à chanter, composer, produire et écrire dans mon studio il y a quelques semaines, après une pause de 4 mois. Pour être franc pendant cette période j’ai songé tout arrêter. Le simple fait d’entendre de la musique me brisait le coeur. Puis l’amour est revenu. La vie, et la musique continuent. Xo
