  1. If you’re a Canadian parent, you’ve probably faced the dilemma of whether or not to put your kids in hockey at a very young age. We decided that we weren’t going to pursue it when Beckett was little because we weren’t sure that he would like it and honestly didn’t know if it was going to be worth the fight and the 6 am ice times. When he was nine, Beckett wanted to try out hockey for the very first time. Like many parents, I was really nervous about putting him in when he was so far behind. It’s crazy to think, but nine years old in Canadian hockey is a pretty late start. I will never forget the first time we put him in power skating with kids who were 5 to 7 years old and he was 9. As they skated laps around him, I felt like we had put him at a huge disadvantage for waiting so long. But over that first year in hockey academy at school, and now playing on a team for the very first time in his life, I couldn’t be more proud of how much he has grown. It’s crazy to see how hockey has become his entire personality. Every gift at Christmas was hockey-related, Fortnite has been abandoned in favour of NHL 2026, YouTube shorts have been replaced with hockey highlights, and all he wants to do every day after school is head to the outdoor rink to play shinny with whichever kids happen to show up that day. I’m not saying he’s going to be the next Connor McDavid, but it’s so rewarding to see him so excited and passionate about something that we didn’t choose for him. I’m so happy about the friendships he has made as a part of his team. It’s been amazing to see his confidence grow and to see him make friends who he can’t wait to see both on the ice and off of it. I honestly never thought I’d be a hockey mom, but I’m so glad we took the chance. It’s been an amazing adventure not just for our kid, but for us as parents. So, all this to say, if your kid wants to try hockey for the very first time and you think it’s too late, take the chance. I promise it’ll be worth it. #hockeymom #hockeylife #hockeyislife
