  3. What I wish I knew before breastfeeding and pumping.. 1. You don’t need to pump as soon as your baby is here to bring in your supply - just put them on the boob as often as you can in those first days. Enjoy the cuddles, skin to skin and time with your bub and it will come in naturally. 2. Don’t listen and compare yourself to people online, your friends/family or to your neighbour that produced enough for every baby on the street. Everyone is different and what you produce is the perfect amount. 3. A newborn baby has a stomach the size of a pea, they don’t need gallons of milk straight away. 4. Your milk might not come in straight away. That’s ok!! Stay positive, keep cuddling and loving your baby and it will happen. And if it doesn’t, there are options! Just don’t stress yourself out. 5. Newborns lose weight in the first week - it’s normal. By day 7 you will have some idea of what feeding journey you are on and will be able to work it out from there. 6. See an LC! Listen to midwives and nurses but don’t take it as textbook, research for yourself and ask questions. If you’re wanting to breastfeed I highly recommend chatting to a LC before you give birth. 7. There is no need to pack your fridge and freezer with milk. Just no. 8. If you want to breastfeed, you won’t need to really start expressing and storing milk until 4 weeks in if that’s what you want to do. You will be feeding on demand until then so don’t think on day 7 you need a fridge full of milk. 9. Don’t be bullied into thinking you need to be making more milk than you are. Your baby will be the best to determine your supply so trust the process. 10. Be kind to yourself. You’re doing fucking great sweetie. I know what it’s like to stress about the amounts that are coming out when expressing and that it doesn’t seem like enough, but it is. If you need to top up with formula that is fine too!! Don’t be bullied to think formula is bad. Your baby and your body will determine your journey, just trust the process. Colostrum: I never got colostrum prior to Elke. I tried to express and it never came. That’s ok!! Not everyone will be able to express prior to their baby arriving. Xoxo
