  1. Well my lovelies, a little look back on one of the most watched bits of content I’ve ever made… a very simple bit of paint stripping, on some very big, old doors that ended up being viewed a slightly surreal 2.6 million times! I’m sharing it again, as it’s actually led to something a bit exciting (and equally surreal) happening last week that I should be able to share in the next few days, but I thought it was worth resharing for context, with a little update as to what they actually look like now the rooms finished! As a reminder, I’d never see these doors open until I’d got the keys to the house, and had never seen these two rooms as one big space, but it absolutely blew my mind that, with a bit of gentle persuasion, they opened beautifully on their enormous brass hinges, though they wouldn’t fold fully flat, as the navy had installed radiators on the walls behind them, impeding their journey. Like all the woodwork here though, they were of course covered in many, many layers of old, lead based paint – yey! They’re so huge, they swing practically half way into the room, so they remain open all the time… closing them would actually require me to move the sofa! But, they certainly are things of beauty and remarkably, now all the paint is off them, all the old catches and bolts work too! And before anyone bemoans the fact that I repainted them, as many did the first time I shared this… t’was always my intention – just as the Georgians would have done with pine too in a house of this style and nature – had I found oak or walnut beneath, things would have been different but you’ll find no bare pine in this house save for on the floors, just as I believe it would have been when it was first built. #renovation #beforeandafter #oldhouse #myperiodhome #oldhomelove #mygeogrianrenovation #houserenovation #georgianhouse #victorianhouse #myvictorianrenovation #transformation #asmr

  2. ‘Why did you buy such a big house?’… well, it’s a question I seem to be getting asked more frequently here, so I thought I’d answer it in the best way I can though if I’m honest, it’s not straightforward! First things first, very few people NEED a house this big… especially when said people, yours truly included dear reader, won’t ever be filling it with little ‘uns! So, what’s the point then? The question always makes me think of the answer George Mallory gave when asked why he wanted to climb Everest – a subject I was fascinated with as a youth… ‘Because it’s there’ was his answer. He was a romantic and idealist, and to him that was reason enough, and he paid a high price for his romanticism. It’s something I can deeply relate to! Physically exhausting, fraught with risk both physical and financial… lots of steps (chortle!), there’s more similarities to renovating Admirals and being the first person to summit Everest than first meets the eye… but, like Mallory, as an eternal optimist and hopeless romantic, I assume the best, and well, imagine if it all goes right… imagine the end result… won’t it be bloomin’ brilliant? Not just to create a home, a space to share with family and friends. a place in which to make memories, to grow old… but to save something, rapidly on its way to dereliction that had sat, unsold and unwanted for years, for future generations - despite having no offspring to hand it to, well – it still gives me a tingle of pure joy thinking about it! 10 years ago, there’s no way I’d have ever thought I’d have had it in me… in fact, 10 years ago I didn’t think I’d ever be a home owner… but, it is truly remarkable what we can achieve when we find a passion for something – and whilst this wee lump is no Everest, it makes me very, very happy indeed! #renovation #beforeandafter #oldhouse #myperiodhome #oldhomelove #mygeogrianrenovation #houserenovation #georgianhouse #victorianhouse #myvictorianrenovation #challenge #labouroflove #restorationproject

  3. Well lovely bunch, I never thought 5 and a half years in that Admirals would still be delivering surprises… so when I set about dismantling the MDF shelves, I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d find much other than some old pipes! This floor, sadly seems to have had the vast majority of its features ripped out by the Royal Navy and it was never clear to me what the rooms were used for, especially where the cooking happened, as there was no sign of the large fireplace you’d expect in a house this size. So imagine my excitement when under the shelves, on the floor, was an enormous stone hearth disappearing under the wall… A quick bit of investigation and I’d found a brick and metal lintel, and as I took out the first few bits of rubble that had been used to fill it, the unmistakable smell of old soot, and clouds of fine black dust started pouring out! It’s taken an age to clear it all, having to carry everything out by bucket up the steps into the garden but I am so excited… I’ve no idea how long this has been sealed up and forgotten about, but I did find a scrap of paper that seems very old and mentions King George the first… I think it would have had a cooking range set within it, hence the hearth being such a mess, so it’s going to take a lot of work to make good again (I’m planning on just laying some stone over the top, to preserve what’s there and retain the history and its secrets for the future), but I am so, so thrilled to have found it. It feels incredibly special to peel back the layers and get an insight into how the house would have functioned 220 years ago, and imagine the bustle of activity as broths bubbled and meats roasted over the flames, with the fire the beating heart of the house… There’s lots to come, but I couldn’t wait to share this first glimpse of the very surprising (and backbreaking!) work I’ve ended up doing this week – and if anyone knows what this might once have looked like please let me know - I’ve already started researching! Happy Sunday! Xx #fireplace #discovery #surprise #renovating #renovation #periodfeatures #oldhouselove #oldhouse #oldhome #myhome #homerenovation #houserenovation#
