  1. I’m at work for you, please stay home for me! I don’t do personal stuff here but normal went out the window last week. I’m Natalie and I’m an obstetrics and gynaecology trainee (ladies and delivering babies) which I have wanted to do since year two of Med school. But due to the Pandemic I am getting pulled off my dream training program to work in Intensive Care. NHS workers are sacrificing so much for you at this time: From moving into hotels away from vulnerable loved ones so they can still work, to working massive overtime, to putting their training on hold, and cancelling leave to work. Mandatory exams we have revised for have been cancelled, and promotions and training experiences are delayed. These sacrifices will affect our careers for years to come. If we survive. Because yes, we are also putting our lives on the line. I’m watching more of my colleagues get sick every day. Doctors have, and will die from an infection they could have been shielded from if they had chosen another job. And some will not recover. The outlook is terrifying. I am scared. The current restrictions (next slide) are not a list of actions that you can “get away with”. Although you can buy food, you should do this as infrequently as possible. You do not need to go outside every day especially if you could go a lazy Sunday without going outside normally. If you can exercise inside - then do that! Key workers are all making huge sacrifices, so don’t just do the bare minimum. Do everything in your power to go out as little as possible. Every time you go out you’re potentially causing a tidal wave of infection cases that will swamp our hospitals. In less than two weeks all our ventilators will be in use. So the people you infect today when they get sick in two weeks? They may not get a ventilator if they need it. That could be your friend or family member. That’s the honest, horrifying truth. We cannot work from home, and we wouldn’t ask to. WE DON’T NEED YOUR PRAISE OR FREEBIES! We just want you to STAY HOME as much as possible! Its hard, but not as hard as what is to come if you don’t. Please call out anyone you know flaunting the guidance. But just mainly #stayhome!

  2. Environmental justice isn’t possible without social justice! This is something that I think a lot of us don’t realise when we start to care more about the environment. But the reality is you can’t care for the environment, if you only care for the environment! All humans have intrinsic needs, like for food, shelter, safety, financial security etc. and until these needs are met they likely won’t have the capacity to care about more complex needs like a global climate crisis. Yes the climate crisis affects us all, but our brain simply works by prioritising the most immediate and essential needs first. So we actually can’t expect people to care about the planet’s health unless we make sure their basic needs are met first. This means that whilst campaigning for environmental policies, we also need to campaign for social justice issues like: - Housing for people without homes - A universal basic income - Fair taxation of billionaires and corporations - The right to healthcare and education - An end to racial oppression - Ending poverty and hunger - Stopping modern day slavery and trafficking Until every individual has their basic needs met we cannot expect them to have the capacity to join the fight for the climate, so our environmental work must go hand in hand with a fight for social justice. The more we care for others the more we can all care for our world. We cannot care for the planet, by caring for the planet only! #Zerowaste #zerowastelondon #zerowasteuk #zerowastehome #goingzerowaste #ourplanetourhome #zerowastecollective #plasticfree #plasticfreeliving #wastefreeplanet #refusereducereuserecycle #reducewhatyouproduce #zerowasteliving #choosetorefuse #refusesingleuseplastic #iamzerowastecommunity #zerowastechristian #socialjustice #environmentaljustice

  1. Hospices de Beaunes: the Auction, the Wines and the Tasting! 🍷 The Wines: The Hospices de Beaune vineyards encompass over 60 hectares across Burgundy’s prestigious Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits.   The auction features 51 cuvées produced by the domaine des Hospices de Beaune,  with an impressive 80% sourced from prestigious Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. 🍇 2024 Vintage: A milestone vintage for the right and, sadly, wrong reasons. The good news is that 2024 marks the complete conversion of the estate to organic farming, a project that has been seven years in the making. Organic viticulture is challenging at the best of times in Burgundy, but 2024 was a particularly tricky year of blood, sweat and a lot of mildew. The wet growing season led to intense mildew pressure; however, through constant vigilance in the vineyard, grapes were generally healthy with very little botrytis (rot).  Reds suffered more than whites, with significantly less rain in the  Côte de Beaune, where most Chardonnay is grown, compared to the Côte de Nuits, predominantly planted with Pinot Noir. The most successful wines I tasted were elegant, fresh and poised, with some of the best examples coming from Pommard, Volnay, and Meursault. 🙋‍♀️ Tasting the Wines Before the Auction: Tasting the wines before the auction is an essential part of the experience, offering bidders a unique opportunity to assess the cuvées firsthand. While a tasting booklet provides tasting notes and auction estimates, nothing compares to experiencing the wines directly - especially if you’re planning to bid on a barrel. The tasting takes place on the Saturday and Sunday morning of the auction weekend in the stunning, historic cellars of the Hospices de Beaune. Samples are drawn straight from the barrel, each offering a snapshot of the wine’s potential! #hospicesdebeaune #beaune #burgundy #wine #mersault #volnay #aloxecorton #puligny #montrachet #chassagne #chassagnemontrachet #pommard #burgundywine @domaine_hospicesdebeaune @winesofburgundy

  3. Dry Kabinett: Rethinking Mosel Riesling 🍇 I’ve been posting less about the wines I drink at home - maybe that’s a good thing, maybe you’d like more? Either way, some bottles are too good to keep to myself & this is one of them… 🍷 @weingut_markusmolitor , Graacher Domprobst Kabinett, 2015 Mosel Riesling has long held a place in my heart: these wines are fresh, floral, & delicate, juxtaposed by immense tension, acidity & unmistakable slate minerality. 🪨 Why THIS wine? 1️⃣ It hails from ungrafted vines, aka pure Vitis vinifera with no phylloxera-resistant American rootstock. This is Riesling on the rocks in the truest sense. 2️⃣ It challenges expectations of Kabinett Riesling. While Kabinett wines in Germany’s Prädikatswein system are often off-dry (slightly sweet), this one is totally dry, making it a fascinating outlier. 💡 A Quick Guide to Kabinett & Beyond Kabinett Rieslings are not classified by sweetness, but by the ripeness of the grapes at harvest. Riper grapes = higher potential alcohol &/or sweetness in the finished wine. The winemaker then decides the final style: ➡️ Fermenting to dryness converts more sugar into alcohol, resulting in a dryer wine with higher ABV - like this one at 10.5%, which is relatively high for a Kabinett. ➡️ Stopping fermentation earlier leaves more residual sugar, producing a lower-alcohol (often around 7-9%) off-dry wine, balancing sweetness and acidity. 📌 The Prädikatswein Pyramid
Kabinett is just the beginning. The system includes 6 classifications, increasing in ripeness (& potential sweetness): 1️⃣ Kabinett - Light, fresh, typically off-dry but can be dry.
2️⃣ Spätlese - More concentrated, often richer.
3️⃣ Auslese - Made from carefully chosen, riper grapes, often with some botrytis influence.
4️⃣ Beerenauslese - Rare, intensely sweet, made from hand-selected botrytised grapes.
5️⃣ Trockenbeerenauslese - Rich and honeyed, made from individually shriveled botrytised grapes.
6️⃣ Eiswein (ice wine) – Naturally frozen grapes, resulting in a pure, vibrant flavour. This bottle is a reminder of just how versatile Mosel Riesling can be & why I keep coming back for more! 🥂

  2. Ready for Rule of 5 in 2024? It's great to have you here! It's been such a lovely experience travelling with all my Rule of 5 friends this last year, I couldn't possibly look back. Instead, I'm really looking forward to doing it with all of you again - only better this time. Quick reminder of the guidelines on these slides, but please remember they are just a guide. This is your challenge, it's important it's right for you, your needs and where you are in life right now. Having completed the challenge last year I can assure you it really is worth it, on so many levels. It resets your shopping habits, refreshes your relationship with fashion, deepens your relationship with style, saves you money (yes!), introduces you to creativity - and it helps the fight against climate change. I'm sure I don't need to tell you fashion is responsible for 8-10% of the world's emissions, has a huge waste problem clogging up deserts, seas and frankly any part of the world we can find to ship to, and is encouraging consumption at a rate far beyond that which the world's resources will allow. What's great about this challenge is that it is something we can all do, it is enjoyable and revealing and if enough of us do it, it could change the current trajectory we are on. So give it a go! Your wardrobe (and your happiness levels) will thank you. Do subscribe to the newsletter via link in bio as the first bulletin will be going out tomorrow, with lots more detail (don't worry, it's not that complicated). #ruleof5 #sustainablefashion #2024

  3. Please stop building bike lanes like this 🥺 @plymouthcitycouncil 📍Billacombe Road Why? Having cars are parked between the road & bike lane actively encourages accidents between cyclists & car doors. Not necessarily through driver negligence, but just by design. People are much less likely to look before opening a door on the side of the door not facing the road, so they open it right into the path of oncoming cyclists. This has happened to me no less than five times on this section of road in the last four weeks (I’ve ridden this path 32 times in that time according to @strava). I’d say only of those was a properly close miss, but I know several people who’ve been taken off by this kinda thing. As a result, I stay to the far left & slow down as a precaution now. How should it be, imo? 1. Segregate the path using bollards, which stop people opening their left-hand doors. Even better would be to build a separate superhighway; this is an arterial route into the city, after all. 2. Increase the amount of space between the cars & the bike lane (although people always seem to park further to the left than the box to avoid their mirrors being clipped) 3. Get rid of the car parking spaces 🤷‍♂️ (every house on this section of road seems to have a private driveway?) What do you think? 🤔💭 #plymouth #bikelane #cyclinginfrastructure #bikelanes #devoncycling #cyclingreel #cyclingcommunity #plymouthcycling #ridecannondale #wahooligan #fromwhereiride #cyclinglifestyle #ridebikesbehappy #strava #stravacycling
