  1. It’s not just epic works of literature and chronicles of boastful kings that survive from the ancient Near East. Inscribed into clay with a reed stylus, everyday documents like letters, receipts, and accounting spreadsheets, as well as important records like marriage certificates, title deeds, and international treaties, have all endured through the millennia, bringing to life the first half of written history. At Tyndale House, we’re working our way through a large number of these documents, written in Akkadian and other languages, from various sites whose histories and locations overlap with the periods and regions described in the Old Testament. Our goal is to record and analyse the names of all the people who appear in these sources. Perhaps surprisingly, names are important sources of historical information. The language and meaning of names can tell us about people’s cultural backgrounds or religious beliefs, for example. Understanding the changes in naming practices as populations migrate, gods rise and fall in popularity, and fashions shift in and out, can also help us answer questions like, do the names we see in the Bible fit in their historical and geographical context? We’ve got a long way to go on the project, but in the meantime we have the pleasure of reading many fascinating ancient documents like this one! 2. Back to Scribal school! I've been experimenting with different sizes of script, different levels of clay-wetness, and writing in Babylonian rather than in Sumerian. . . The first few lines I wrote when the clay was wet, and are from the end of the Babylonian 'Epic of Creation', when the god Marduk gets given the title of the former head of the pantheon: "Since he created the heavens and fashioned the earth, Enlil, the father, called him by his own name, 'Lord of the Lands'..." (I copied more but stopped in the middle of a word because the clay was cracking!) . . The next few lines are from the epic of Gilgamesh, and I wrote them out about 12 hours later, when the clay was starting to harden. I also tried to write the signs as small as they are on the surviving versions of the story, which seemed to be a lot easier with the clay having hardened a bit! I struggled to keep the signs in a straight line though, just like when I'm writing in English 😂. In this section, Uta-napishti has survived the flood, and is offering incense to the gods, but everyone's hoping Enlil (who brought the flood) doesn't find out that someone survived: "...make me remember these days, and never forget them! All the gods shall come to the incense, but to the incense let Enlil not come..." . . . #Assyriology #Iraq #Mesopotamia #Ancienthistory #history #Assyria #assyrian #Babylonian #cuneiform #ancientneareast #language #writing #clay #akkadian #lostart #scribe #classics #phdlife #historiansofinstagram #mythology #archaeology #myth #ancient #ancientworld #clay #Gilgamesh #Marduk #storytime
