  1. I feel weird writing about this but I’m furious at the disparity between how men and women in this situation are discussed. Deborah James’ husband Sebastian has been ‘reported’ (who even knows what that means, as it doesn’t seem to come from him) to be in a new relationship. It has been three years since she died and the comments section in every report has a lot to say about it. For context, I’ve never met Seb but I knew Debs personally. We actually spoke a lot about relationships when cancer is in the mix and I know she opened up about telling Seb to find someone else when she died. This fact is quoted in nearly every single comment Ive read on the internet today, along with congratulations for Seb. It reminded me of Helen McCrory’s death, where she told her husband Damian Lewis she wanted him to have ‘lots of girlfriends’. This seal of approval from wives is the gold stamp for men to move forward and the world be overjoyed for them. This is not offered so freely to women in the same situation. As an example, Kelsey Parker has spoken at length about her husband Tom’s wishes for her to go on to find joy and happiness in her life after he died of cancer, but this is entirely ignored by those who comment publicaly. Total strangers write directly on Kelsey’s own Instagram page that Tom would have been horrified and accuse her of never loving him. (On a separate note, I haven’t dared to look at comments on the tragic loss of Kelsey’s new baby. I’m hopeful humans would understand the total devastation of this but I’ve thought that before 🤡) Why are we like this???? Obviously - patriarchy, misogyny- but if we can ‘respect’ women enough to value their wishes for men to find love when they are gone, why do we snub and critique those who are doing the same? I find the entire situation baffling. Ultimately, I’m delighted for Seb, for Damian, for Kelsey, for anyone who has gone through the pain of watching the person they love die and taking the huge leap in loving again. As someone who hasn’t felt brave enough to open up my heart to a relationship yet, I can tell you it is nowhere near as easy or straight forward as it may seem from the outside.

  2. My dog Little Milk died this morning. There are so many things I’d forgotten about immediate grief; the ability to move and think clearly in a crisis, how when the adrenaline leaves your bod, the physical weight of shock sets up camp in your muscles to pin you down, how you can realise that don’t actually understand what’s happened yet but you know there will be a moment coming in the near future when the realisation crashes down on you. It wasn’t how I wanted her death to be. I didn’t get to say goodbye to her. I wasn’t with her. How did I forget this - that whatever outcome you think will happen wont begin to resemble the reality? I hate it when people dilute their grief around their pets, because they feel they need to acknowledge the unspoken grief hierarchy i.e. they weren’t human, therefore its impact can’t be as big. For me personally, Milk was a member of my family and the feelings around her dying will correspond with her grand stature in my heart. She leaves us at a very turbulent moment in our household. She has kept us from falling apart in a way I have never managed to. Her calm, healing presence acted like a cloth to the forehead when we have all lost the plot. She dies almost four years to the day since Greg died. The weather was exactly the same then too; bright and sunny with a crisp autumn bite. Greg always referred to Milk as an angel, her (blind) way of floating around to deliver love to whoever needed it at that time made her almost ethereal. She comforted him up until the end, and now they can comfort each other. I just don’t know how to lose another person to comfort me.
