But it was only maybe a year ago when I was doing a challenge that I tried yoga every week for six weeks. And the trainer was Roisin. The first photo is me in September 2020. I got admitted to A&E one day with extreme pain on the right side of my abdomen. I thought I had appendicitis, but they told me that the amount of pain I was in did not add up to appendicitis. In an ultrasound, they found an ovarian cyst which was 14cm in length. It had twisted around my Fallopian tube. It’s called ovarian torsion, which is why I had been in agony. They operated and took the cyst out, but they found cancerous cells in the centre. It’s called a Germ Cell cancer. A germ cell is a cell that contains all your genetic information (reproductive cells). They operated again to remove my right ovary, and after a linear recovery, on I went with life. In October 2021, 4 weeks into medical school, I thought I was suffering with long Covid. I was breathless, so couldn’t walk up the stairs, I had random pains radiating through my face and neck, and an unbearable cough. I requested to get a chest x-ray, where they sent me to A&E. I found out that my cancer was back; a tumour had spread in my chest, which was pressing on my trachea and superior vena cava, explaining my struggle to breathe and the pains. A biopsy of my tumour showed that it was made up mainly of PNET - a type of cancer which is very rare and aggressive, and that researchers don’t yet know much about. I got admitted to ICU where I had emergency chemo. I’m currently on my 8th round of chemo. Fortunately, the chemo is working really well and the tumour has massively reduced in size, to the point where my chest X-ray practically looks normal. I take this as a massive win 🍾 Because my cancer is so rare, there’s little research to show which treatment is best in ‘curing’ it. A charity is helping us fund the immunotherapy which I’m starting today. They help people with rare cancers receive vital treatments not covered by the NHS. Please donate to them.   2. My blood counts may be low but I try to keep my spirits high… This week we encountered my toughest chemo hurdle so far. We drove all the way to London with getting my 6th round of chemo on Tuesday in mind, only to find out that my blood counts came back too low. This meant that I didn’t have enough white blood cells, making my immune system too weak. It’s called neutropenic. I got given more injections which stimulate your bone marrow to produce white blood cells and have more blood tests tomorrow. If they’ve gone back up, I’ll get chemo 🤞🏽 Constantly learning to climb back up every time I get knocked down.

  1. I always talk about the amazing effects yoga has had on me mentally, but not about how asana and Breathwork literally healed my physical body. I never thought I’d be talking about my womb in such detail on the internet, but here we go… 3 years ago, after having 2 babies back to back (one of those babies being almost as big as me 🥴) I was diagnosed with uterine prolapse – meaning my pelvic floor could no longer hold my uterus where it should be. With this alongside pelvic separation and Diastasis recti My body felt broken. My periods were unbearable. Months passed, but nothing improved. I was put on the long waiting list for surgery. I was told “You can keep doing yoga, it might help a little, but only surgery will fix this.” I didn’t only keep practicing yoga, I started practicing every single day, morning and night, and started to notice my symptoms improving. Almost a year later, I walked into my pre-op appointment, and came out with news I wasn’t expecting - my body had healed, my body was strong and I no longer needed surgery. Through patience, yoga, and deep trust in my body’s wisdom, I avoided a surgery I thought was inevitable.   2. When I first started going to yoga classes, I thought the goal was to be able to do as many poses as possible, balance on my head and do the splits. As I started to go deeper into my journey, I realised that the purpose of asana (the poses) is to prepare the body for stillness. And that being completely still, whilst trying to have as little thoughts as possible in my mind is actually the most challenging yet transformative practice I’ve experienced.   3. Have you ever said any of these things?… you should probably try yoga. Yoga isn’t a workout or a performance, it doesn’t require anything other than presence. It’s a spiritual practice that goes way beyond the mat, but the mat is a great place to start. Flexibility, strength and patience aren’t the purpose of yoga, but they are amazing byproducts of a regular practice, so you certainly don’t need to be any of them to start. 🧘‍♀️ #yogateacher #yogaasana #yogaandwellness

  2. 0.1% ABV Alcohol-Free … Sometime around this time of year a whole five years back …. I’m not actually sure of the date as it was never marked as an occasion when it first happened… I quietly stopped drinking alcohol. There’s no rock bottom story, no dramatic farewell tour. Just my body telling me I wasn’t to drink anymore, mid a glass of the most delicious natural red that had been a staple alllll through the lockdowns. There was no conscious decision making, no final drink, literally a mid glass moment when I just felt “I can’t drink that”. And so I stopped. And yes I’ve tried to start again and my body still gives it a big no. Over the years I’ve realised it’s not the booze so much I miss but the actual ritual of having a nice drink - a moment of quiet whilst drinking it, or the enjoying with pals and having a good old yap at the same time. It’s often a marker between one life mode and another, work and play. There’s one drink I enjoy that really stands out - and it’s ALWAYS on my drinks shelf - the at the front drink, not the pushed to the back and ignore one. @motherrootldn All the deliciousness and fancy feel I want from a drink these days.   3. Fun fact - portals to rest was originally inspired by a blog post I wrote… on how to settle to rest. That and a whole load of content that was in the first couple of iterations of rested being an immersion into Yoga Nidra (making it bust at the seams!) It’s grown and evolved each time it’s been shared.. now spanning 4 days - looking at cellular rest, relationship with rest, rest as activism and a whole day on sound and rest too. (As a side note - ALWAYS go with trustfall and bag a spot when somebody offers it the first time around - always the best value and full of content!)
