  1. Goodnight Jakey 🌈✨💔 It’s with heavy hearts that we had to make that call today that all fur-parents dread. Just five weeks after losing Tilly, there is a huge, feline-shaped hole at Keeper’s Cottage. Unfortunately we found out earlier this week that Jake likely had an aggressive cancer. We noticed a very rapid decline in his weight, so we took him to the vet. We tried steroids, knowing it wouldn’t cure him, but would hopefully see him bounce back and give us a little more time. But he stopped eating. He was calm, gently snoozing, softly purring. We take comfort in that he didn’t seem to be in pain. But we just knew that it was his time. For us to try to steal a few more days would have only been for our good; not his. He went peacefully, with us by his side. We have had fifteen healthy years - and that’s to be cherished. He was the most handsome chap, and boy did he know it. He’s been ruling the roost since he moved in. He was also the most affectionate wee chap, always curling up on our knees (or, often burrowing his way up Paul’s jumpers). These cats have been with us almost our entire lives together. They’ve moved from Sheffield, to Derbyshire then to the Scottish Highlands. They’ve been a constant through our highs and lows. We take comfort that in their fifteen year, Jake and Tilly only had five weeks without each other. The reason we had both of them was their inseparable bond from day one. We couldn’t bear to split them up. We will miss them dearly, but treasure the memories forever.

  1. .On Wednesday, I won the Summer @spinerace Challenger North. I haven’t been sure how I feel about it. The starting point is obviously I can’t actually believe it happened. Winning a Spine Race is not something I ever dreamt I would be capable of. I’ve tried on my normal thoughts of “well it wasn’t that hard and you weren’t that fast” but it was fucking hard and I was a lot faster than I thought. I came in at 53hrs 11mins, just an hour over my “unicorn” time (a time I think may be possible if I turn into a unicorn). I’ve tried on “it’s not that competitive” and worked out I don’t know how competitive it was because I know Jack shit about anyone else taking part or what their plans were. What I do know is that I went out there and did the best I could on the day. It resulted in something I had not considered a possibility. I’ve been really vocal about process over result and that stands up more than ever. Nothings changed, I’m still the same, I’m not different. I am, however, incredibly proud of what I’ve become in the process of getting to this race - and I’m talking years of mental and physical training, not months. I feel content that I couldn’t have done any better (regardless of position), and that’s a new feeling for me. I am being kind to myself. I don’t feel like I’ve lost something. There’s a peace. In the last few days I’ve had people tell me I am no longer allowed to see myself as “bang average”. With respect, I am entitled to see myself exactly as I want. The point is I work harder than most average people do to excel in certain areas - my fitness, my mental health, my recovery. I’d like people to see that and do the same instead of thinking they need to be naturally gifted or that blind belief alone will work. I want to be an example of what is possible. I want to continue enjoying the sport and not become obsessed with constantly getting “better”. I’m not interested in expectations. I want to make mistakes, learn and have adventures. I want this feeling of contentment to last (cont in comments)

  2. I’m not a naturally gifted runner, I don’t have a history of sport and I didn’t run until I was 30 - even and then I spent 10 years using runnjng to justify my alcoholism, destroying what little body I had left on the hill weekend after weekend and calling myself an ultra runner. I did my first @centurionrunning race in 2017. The Autumn 100 - a race I thought would “save me” from myself. It didn’t. Instead of being a massively insecure, depressed and anxious alcoholic, I became a massively insecure, depressed and anxious alcoholic with a sub-24 hour buckle. And so it went on. I did all their 100’s multiple times. I hated myself and I felt nothing so I could easily hammer myself in those races. Nothing changed. But I did find something I didn’t expect - acceptance and community and dare I say it, love? It was like the people around this races saw me, knew I was ill but decided to wait until I was ready to be better. Just like everyone else had to. And they were and are still there once I was back on my feet. And I am so grateful. One day, I thought, I’d love to have a centurion trophy. I trained so fucking hard for the Winter Downs 200. So hard. I never dreamt I would be able to come anywhere near the top three - it’s never really on my agenda before a race. The fact there were only 8 women on the start line meant a guaranteed top 10 finish at least (more on that later). It’s pretty simple - I saw a gap and exploited it - I managed the impossible due to someone much more talented than me not being able to hold down solid food. There’s nothing more to it than that but I am thrilled with my own performance regardless (18 hours off my previous 200 time, no sickness) @ultra_damo said to me “just get there in the fastest time for you” so I did. Thanks for (always) looking after me, Damo - and of course @rocky_road_lorna for no nonsense crewing #dreamteam. Thanks @rushbynature and @pete_stables for making me solid and strong. Thanks @jameselsonator for waiting for me to get better. Thanks to the Bogs are the Best girls for constant inspiration and support. Running done for 2024. What a year.

  3. I’m gonna talk about something I think a lot of nurses (including myself) get afraid to talk about. I recently watched a talk from a doctor who spoke to a room full of nurses about burnout. She spoke of the signs of burnout: exhaustion, loss of sleep, increased anxiety, headaches, loss of appetite.. but the last thing she said hit me like a ton of bricks. And I know I wasn’t the only one in the room who felt this way. She said the biggest sign of nurse burnout was compassion fatigue. As nurses, our job description literally means ‘to care’. So when we work ourselves into the ground and put our patient’s needs before our own, what happens when we start to get annoyed with our patients? When we start to lack empathy? When we start to lose patience? We feel like we’ve failed as a nurse. Earlier in the summer, I started to feel all of those feelings. I started to get frustrated at patients who asked me to take their blood pressure as an extra during a 5 minute appointment they were already late for. I started to feel numb, I started to feel like I didn’t care anymore. And not until I spoke to family and work friends, I realised I was experiencing burnout. But the most important thing I realised at this point was that I was not alone. I knew it was time to take a step back, that something needed to change so I could be that eager first year student again who was so excited to care for others. So I booked annual leave, I planned days out but most importantly I decided it was time to drop my hours. Practice nursing is truly the best job ever. But when the novelty of that blue uniform wore off (and after speaking to other GPNs), I quickly realised it was much better for me as a part-time job. I’m coming out the other end of it now, and this is what I’ve learned: I have not failed. I do care about my patients. I just forgot to take care of myself. I just forgot that I will never be that first year student again because I have grown, I have seen things. But most importantly, I forgot that I am a good nurse. Over 40% of nurses in the UK reported that they suffer from burnout. Make changes. Adjust your working pattern. Let’s talk about it. 🩺
