Ad Letโ€™s transform plain storage into pure dopamine joy using @valsparpaintuk Multi-Surface and Furniture Paint! ๐Ÿ’• This paint doesnโ€™t require primer which was a huge time saver ๐Ÿ™Œ Iโ€™m painting a Mixxit cube shelving unit from @bandq_uk and up-cycling an old unit into shoe storage / seated bench. The colours Iโ€™ve used are @valsparpaintuk Loverโ€™s Secret, Pink Panache and Downing Street. My top tips for painting storage furniture: ๐Ÿ’• Give the unit a light sand, especially if itโ€™s a glossy finish, to give the paint a good key. ๐Ÿ’• Apply 2 coats or @valsparpaintuk Furniture Paint (I went for the flat Matt formula). No need to prime first! ๐Ÿ’• Let the paint fully cure / harden before you put any items on it. Itโ€™s touch dry within an hour, and will properly harden after a few days. ๐Ÿ’• Add some fun, whimsy handles ๐Ÿ’• Get the plywood for the bench cut to size at B&Q I am thrilled with how this turned out.   2. AD My massive (can I also say epic?!) Hallway / Stairs Shakeover with @valsparpaintuk ๐Ÿ’š Eeeeek, I went for it guys! I colour drenched the entire lower half of our hallway AND the staircase. Iโ€™m so glad I was brave because I love it so much. I have used @valsparpaintuk colour Blue Fescue which is the loveliest muted blue/green. It really makes the stained glass colours pop, and also gives a welcoming feel to our entrance. I used the colours Tidy White on the upper walls and Downing Street on the radiator. I got all this mixed at my local @bandq_uk I used Valspar Premium Wall/Ceiling Paint Matt Emulsion for the walls and panelling. I used Valspar Premium Wood/Metal in Eggshell finish, which is a low sheen but still highly durable. I painted this on the dado rail, skirting boards, door/window frame, doors, door frames, radiator and staircase. @valsparpaintuk provide a Pure Colour promise and consistent colour matching. Despite using different paint finishes, the colour and finish is beautifully consistent. Iโ€™ve used Valspar Premium paints before, so Iโ€™m also confident in their everyday durability. I have young children so having scrubbable paint is absolutely essential! The coverage was also amazing. This project involved a LOT of areas to paint, and yet it didnโ€™t take me too long because the paint was such a dream to use. I used 5L tins of Matt Emulsion and 2.5L of Wood/Metal Paint and still had paint left in the tins! Other learning from this project: ๐Ÿ’š I lightly sanded all the woodwork and added 1 coat of Valspar primer before painting. I didnโ€™t need to prime the walls. ๐Ÿ’š I used painters tape to protect the edges of the stair-runner ๐Ÿ’š I used tinfoil around the edge of the paint tins to stop the paint clogging up the edges ๐Ÿ’š I used an old carrier bag over the paint tray to save on cleaning up ๐Ÿ’š Rollers/paint brushes were wrapped in cling-film while I took breaks from the project, again to save on cleaning ๐Ÿ’š Using a plastic acetate sheet under a skirting board aids speedy painting!   3. So it turns out I canโ€™t do the weekly food shop, or keep on top of school emails, or implement any kind of consistent routine, BUT, I did, lay a patio. By myself.   1. Tonight son No1 is coming back from University and I'll have my full crew of shipmates again for the festive season. I'm planning on being a lot less anxious than I was last year, when I knew that the biggest , and indeed only ever major secret I had from the boys was going to be revealed over New Year, and that they were going to discover that their mother was going to be appearing on @bbc's The Traitors. I was petrified about how they were going to react, how the show was going to be received, but most of all how they would feel about it. Yes my dyslexia got the better of me and I misread Roman numerals, yes I believed that the @bbc had buried @leon.jackman_ alive, yes I got a lot wrong, cried a lot, but gained another son in @freddiefraserr and hung above the Highlands with @alexanderdragonetti. My eldest posted this first slide the night of the final with just the caption of #Proud , which was enough for me, having lost the biggest game show in front of them. None of us knew how popular the show would be, and that as they scrolled they'd strangely see memes of their 'mother'. It has been an extraordinary year filled with weird and wonderful experiences for both me and them. They've seen me doll up, fight over a handbag on Mother's day in @johnlewis, chat homeware and carve pumpkins on @thismorning, discuss my Cluedo outfits, prance on red carpets, have photo/film crews in the house , and even decorate for Christmas in September! I am so incredibly proud of how they have taken this year in their stride, and how we just tick along in our same old ways, albeit a little busier and me in more make up. They have always been my motivation and inspiration. And never more so than now. My youngest said the penultimate week of the show, when seeing a teaser of a screaming woman hanging from a helicopter. "Is that you mum, hanging from the helicopter? " "As if " I replied ".. I don't even go in the teacups at the fairground, as if I'd hang from a helicopter?! " There was a pause.. "But, you'd do it for us" he said. He was not wrong. ๐Ÿ’› .   3. There is a turning point in everyone's life , and mine was twenty years ago today. I went from a girl who was somewhat lost , to a woman with a purpose . After three days of labour and us both nearly not necessary going make it, thanks to the wonders of modern medicine and a somewhat critical emergency c-section, this young man entered the world , and changed mine. There in a hospital in Isleworth , this little 'bean', lay next to my exhausted body and with my arm flopped into his perspex hospital cot, he held my pinky finger the entire night. A strength within grew, along with responsibility, patience, gratitude, determination and a love I'd never known. An understanding that this small being had changed everything, and that the most extraordinary adventure lay ahead. And that's what these last twenty years have been, seeing the world not only through my eyes, but his too and indeed on many occasions his vision altering mine. My desire to provide, love and support becoming boundless as we navigate life together both as mother and son, but also friends, along with his brothers forming a unit that I call our 'Musketeers' . His wisdom beyond his years, his insights and eccentricities, his love and honour have carried him through from a small boy often with a profound word , while dressed as a Fireman Sam or Buzz Lightyear, to an elegant gentleman determined to succeed and change things for the better. Single parenting can be tough , but those times for me, despite the difficulties, I've always viewed as privilege, as the bond we have formed is beyond precious. The irony is not lost on me that his birthday often falls on or around IWD , as i'm proud to say I've raised a feminist, and he and his brothers, make me strive every day to be the woman I want to be.   3. My biggest fear about this chapter in life isnโ€™t safety or loneliness. Itโ€™s that in years to come I might want to rejoin a more mainstream way of living and perhaps I wonโ€™t be able to. A lot of people my age are married with children, they are working in careers that promise progression and pensions, they aspire to own luxury goods. No shade, these are all things I used to want. I have already had so many gorgeous chapter of life, and now somehow I ended up in this one. Somewhere along my path I realised that actually what I truly desire is peace and so here I am. But if I ever need to go back to a 9-5 itโ€™s going to be hard from here haha. Luckily I know deep in my core that my path is a different one to what was shown to me as a child. More solitude, more nature, more humble. And for now, thatโ€™s what feels truly aligned.

  2. A throwback to last Saturday when it was still winter ๐Ÿคฃ The weather has improved this week, and we had a few actual days of summer! โ˜€๏ธ And I know like me, you love to see a still. Tbh I โ€˜stillโ€™ ๐Ÿ˜† prefer them too. I booked leave off work this week to break the back in finishing repointing the cottage. Iโ€™ve had a very productive week, and am over half way. Guessing about another 5 days should do it. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿผ Itโ€™s not all gone to plan, with illness, running out of sand and bad weather, but on the whole I guess Iโ€™m doing alright for a girl. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ Its been tough going, my arms, hands, and actually all of me are really aching, and Iโ€™ve had enough of the mess and dust.   3. Itโ€™s a bit of a moody Monday here after yesterdayโ€™s sunshine. I did intend on getting out and doing a bit of gardening after work, but itโ€™s quite dull and showery so Iโ€™ve been drawn to sitting in here instead.   2. I absolutely adore a fun hallway, itโ€™s the first thing you see when you come in from work and these colours just bring me so much joy. I wanted to paint the kitchen red but as it was quite a new kitchen that we only had installed about 4 years ago, the husband put his foot down, so I decided to get the stairs painted instead.   1. We got lucky; when we moved in we found the original fireplace was still here, albeit in parts on the woodpile but salvageable. We peeled back the imposition of neat white modern panelling and reinstated the poor shabby fireplace that ought not to have been removed. The stove remains as the range that was removed was sadly broken up and we donโ€™t have another solution as yet. Thereโ€™s always confusion when I share this space as to which is the before, i hope itโ€™s clear here.

  3. Those few places that are truly untouched by oppressive modernity are ever more sought after and yet still vulnerable to the assumption that they need to be updated. This place of ours was not untouched but with a little gentle and respectful coaxing feels like it has relaxed back into itself and is now free to age gracefully without being straightened and neatened. It simply feels more soulful. Describing the evolution of a home during yesterdayโ€™s workshop here at our house reminded me that I should share more before and after images.   1. Ad/paid collaboration @makeitrustoleum Chalky Wall Paints. Ahhhhhh I canโ€™t believe this is my new living room! When the lovely girls at Rust oleum got in touch about their new chalky wall paints, I knew this room would be in trouble. Swipe to the end for the before...slight transformation, I think youโ€™ll agree! This room has been a complete DIY job my me, Thereโ€™s not one inch that I have not done something to, from plastering the walls, panelling, painting, installing beams and of course laying that dream floor! It also includes all my favourite eBay purchases that I made in the summer of lockdown 2020. The curved sofa of dreams has been upholstered in a vintage wool mohair and Iโ€™ve added a curved base to enhance its form, the dining table has been plastered with marmarino and one of my most recent finds- the vintage marble coffee table from the 70s completed the room to perfection. @makeitrustoleum chalky wall paints are the perfect backdrop, I chose โ€˜Antique Whiteโ€™ and itโ€™s my new favourite shade, I also repainted the crittal inspired patio doors in their โ€˜charcoal blackโ€™ and the finish is beautiful! Thereโ€™s so much to talk about in this room so my blog post will be going live on my new website tomorrow evening, youโ€™ll be able to find the process and all the finer details on there, but for now, I hope you love what Iโ€™ve done and thank you all for your encouragement over the past few weeks! ๐Ÿค๐Ÿค๐Ÿค Paint: antique white @makeitrustoleum Parquet floor: @quickstepfloors creamy beige oak.   2. My very extra and very early Christmas tree reveal! I usually do a super low key tree with glass baubles and lights but this year is a little bit different isnโ€™t it? Not only would my toddler try to eat the glass decorations (sheโ€™s eaten weirder before) I also now have a lovely room to have a lovely tree, and final reason....la carona! Itโ€™s made me want to go all out this year and try to make christmas as beautiful, special and romantic as I can for my family! I selected a mix of dried, artificial and fresh foliage and then realised that I had no clue how to do a floral display ๐Ÿ™ˆ but after many tweaks I think Iโ€™ve finally got it right, super hard to photograph so swipe to see the detailed shots.   3. BABY NUMBER 4 is on the way! So happy to reveal that Iโ€™m 14 weeks pregnant, our dreams of having a big family are coming true this November. The past few weeks have been tough on my body (wonโ€™t bore you with the details) so had to rest but starting to feel back to my normal energetic self again Woop! I know what you are thinking, we must be crazy- 4 kids is a big number but myself @calum_alejandro are so ready to embrace the all chaos and all the love...although as you can see, Palmer is not quite as convinced, especially if it turns out to be another girl ha! Anyway, I know you are all here for the interiors so I wonโ€™t be going on about it too much- donโ€™t fear! Only change is that I just wonโ€™t be plastering any walls anytime soon, having said that, looking forward to a weekend of light diy and getting this cinema room finished FINALLY!   2. A question I get asked is why I choose traditional upholstery methods when there are faster and more convenient modern options available. My answer is simple: all of my work is bespoke. Even though most of the sewing can be done by machine, I prefer to use hand-stitching or a slip stitch for finishing touches. Itโ€™s more precision, but also adds a personal touch that my clients and their chairs deserve. Plus, I find the process to be very therapeutic and thatโ€™s good for my mind too!   2. Thought Iโ€™d pop the kitchen on my grid today because itโ€™s been a while. For any new followers who havenโ€™t seen the stained glass ceiling - or lay light - this was the dream surprise of our reno. It had been covered by a suspended ceiling for over 50 years. Those Victorians could be quite flamboyant! . I was reading about Victorian slang yesterday, and while the phrase for feeling down in the dumps, โ€œgot the morbsโ€, seems apt for lockdown blues, the word I felt most deserved a revival was โ€œchuckabooโ€, a term of endearment for a dear friend.   3. Thank you for all the likes, comments and Story shares on my last post. Iโ€™m still in awe of our kitchen ceiling 6 years on - never imagined myself uttering those words ๐Ÿ˜‚ - and I always struggle with how to follow it. . So, hereโ€™s the master en-suite, which Pinterest helped me imagine and @hetherington.newman helped us create. The first bath I took in here partly emptied itself through one of the light fittings in the dining room. No idea why, but it hasnโ€™t happened since ๐Ÿ˜… I believe it may have been karma for the time I left the bath running in a country house hotel then got engrossed in a copy of Vogue, blissfully unaware it was overflowing into the dining room below...๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜˜
