  2. Arriving at a remote Scottish bothy on your own! This is a short edit of my arrival at the remote bothy beside the ruined village of Peanmeanach, armed with codes for the padlocks, a rucksack full of firewood, and some candles and fairy lights. I found it fun but challenging staying there on my own - a little adventure away from the world. The Ardnish peninsula has spectacular rugged scenery and many deer roaming about. The bothy is full of character and history. I’ve also made a 25 minute video of the whole trip.

A solo night (apart from the 🕷️) in a remote bothy The 3.5 mike walk on the Ardnish peninsula to this bothy was spectacular, even though I had to carry all my water and logs for the fire - no running water or electricity. It was a little nerve wracking being there alone, but it was an experience and an adventure, and that’s what I’m here for. The stars in the remote night sky were stunning, and the bothy was surrounded by deer when I when outside to stare at the night sky.

  1. Tiny home building - Part 6, Making it home We’re in! Alice, Coire and I are now full-time Tigh-Ni home dwellers. It’s true that one wall is still to be clad and that we might need to perfect baking in the firebox but we’ll get there in time. Most of our life is tucked away under the trailer in boxes but it feels liberating to live happily with less stuff (until you really need that “thing”, then it becomes a pain in the arse). And while Alice was infinitely more help than Coire in this build, it’s the little dog who insists on poll position on the sofa. Was it worth it? Absolutely. It relied on the generosity of someone happy to let us build on their land, the good fortune of having a sawmill at the foot of the drive, an entire community of people that would show up with that plumbing fitting or specialist tool or just moral support when we needed them the most but it wasn’t wildly expensive or difficult to do. It was all consuming though so I’m looking forward to us being able to ride bikes together again. Just as soon as I find my bike…

  2. Two years ago I moved from my home in the Highlands of Scotland into a rented flat in Edinburgh’s City Centre. This wouldn’t have been my first choice but in order to attend engagements in my capacity as Active Nation Commissioner I needed to be in Edinburgh or Glasgow pretty regularly. “Stay!” they said “Take the train!” They suggested. Which is great idea actually. I LOVE train travel. With my need for motion satisfied I find I am left free to think and write and gaze at the weather as it whizzes by. Lovely. But I couldn’t. You see the only healthy and efficient way for me to get between engagements in city centres is by bike and here’s the thing…I could never get my bike on the mainline train line between Inverness and the central belt! 🤦🏾 The bike provision on these @scotrail High Speed Trains is appalling. Two badly designed bike hooks means taking your bike south for work (or north for fun) is nearly impossible. BUT check this out!!!! The launch of the @scotrail Explorer Carriages on the west coast line last week heralds a change. 20 people can now travel on each service with their bikes (even over-sized bikes), opening up sustainable exploration of our incredible country to more people who don’t, can’t or won’t rely on cars.   3. Meet Coire (Corrie). She is a wise wee whirlwind who has entered our lives at a million miles an hour and somehow managed to slow us down. Saying yes to a 10 week old puppy wasn’t something I expected to do in my near future but our paths crossed at a mountain bike event on Tim and Gill’s farm on the beautiful island of Kerrera. An auspicious start. I couldn’t say no. Since then we have cleaned up kilos of shit, been herded and nipped and not slept through the night. I have also been nuzzled and cuddled, gazed at adoringly and followed about as though I was magnetic. I’m so looking forward to all the adventures we will share one day once those wee legs are strong enough but for now I’ll just enjoy that puppy smell and her soft, wriggly litheness while trying to get zen with the cleaning up of shit 💩

  2. The final stop on our Belfast coach trip… Giant’s Causeway The main reason I booked this tour and honestly, it was worth every second. Even with the crowds, it felt surprisingly manageable. I’m splitting this part into two posts, because there was just too much beauty for one After getting off the coach, we decided to do something a little different first and headed along the coastal footpath. Surprisingly, only a handful of people seemed to wander this way. Walking past The Organ, we followed the path round to the amphitheatre viewpoint and wow. Absolutely stunning. The entire walk was just breathtaking from start to finish

  3. Last weekend we had planned a visit to Basildon Park. I haven’t been for years! However… rookie error from me. After a late shift the night before, I slept in and we arrived a little later than planned. When we got there, the car park was already full and they were operating a one in, one out system. We waited about 10 minutes but there wasn’t much movement, so I made the call to switch to plan B. That plan led us to Pangbourne for a little wander instead. We started with a quick look around the church before realising we were getting a bit peckish. So we popped into The Cross Keys, just opposite the church. We only wanted a small snack, so had a drink and some cheesy chips 🤭 Knowing it was a Sunday and many pubs are busy with roast bookings (unpopular opinion… I’m not a huge roast dinner fan!), it was nice they could squeeze us in before the lunch rush. After that, we wandered over the River Thames and across to Whitchurch-on-Thames, stopping by St Mary’s Church along the way. On the walk back we even met a new friend at the toll bridge, Maurice, who was more than happy to receive plenty of attention before we crossed back over the river and headed to the car.   3. Stepping out of your comfort zone isn’t always easy, it comes with fear, anxiety and worry. Ive learned that the more you push yourself, the easier it becomes, the fear turns into excitement and your confidence slowly grows. (Although i still overthink everything) Stepping out of your comfort zone doesn’t mean taking on something massive, its the slow steps, that build confidence overtime. Remember to ask yourself, what is the worst that can happen, I sometimes have a backup plan, so I know if it’s too much i have a plan B. It might be to cut a hike short or turn back. Something in the past i used to worry about is what others thought about me always going off on my own. Especially when i spent New Years Eve by myself in the lakes. Society can make you feel like you must be a bit of a loner, that i should have been out socialising! But in fact, i was healing by myself, and i honestly loved that New Year and would 100% do it again ✨ Don’t let the fear of the unknown or other peoples opinions stop you from going out there and doing what you love! ❤️ . . . . . #wellness #strongwomen #challenge #mindset #positiveaffirmations
