  2. Seven lessons to start mastering landscape photography! With @casaramoon / "I moved to Italy at 17 as an exchange student for my last year of high school, which sparked my curiosity about the world and comfort with solo travel. Six years and 25 countries later, I graduated from university and moved to Seattle. A friend took me on a hike close to home, and it was the first time I had ever seen an alpine lake with a snow-capped mountain. I started hiking every weekend, first with just my iPhone, and after about six months of posting on Instagram for friends, I realized I wanted to be able to capture those moments even better. So, I bought my first camera in January 2019, and everything changed: 1) I found a community that inspired me daily: real-life friends with the same hobbies. Building a community of like-minded individuals can provide inspiration and support, enhancing your photography journey. 2) I learned going at sunrise creates a magical soft light that I fell in love with and wanted to capture. 3) I started noticing the little things hiking and always aim to capture the “perfect moment.” 4) The number one ingredient for a great landscape photo is a clear subject that draws the viewer’s eyes in. Natural landscapes can be busy and almost messy, but using shadows and light and focusing on one main subject can create something magical. 5) The other three main ingredients are shooting around sunrise or sunset when light is best, being patient and waiting for the right moment, and visualizing the desired end result, both shooting and editing. 6) My main focus when editing is enhancing the image to make a more magical and vivid display of what I saw in real life. 7) The two things I focus on the most are color balance and proper contrast. Having warmer tones in the highlights and cooler tones in the shadows really brings balance to the image." @casaramoon: What other valuable lessons have you acquired while transitioning from an amateur to a professional? 📸

  1. Staying warm in the cold starts with one thing. Layering the right way. Most people think you just throw on a big jacket and call it good, but that is how you end up cold, sweaty, and miserable on the trail. Here is the simple system that actually works in winter. Start with your base layer. This is the layer that sits against your skin and its job is to pull sweat away from your body. Sweat is what makes you cold in the winter so you need materials like synthetic or merino wool. Never wear cotton because it soaks up moisture and stays wet. Next is your mid layer. This is your insulation and its job is to trap heat. Think fleece, light puffies, or grid hoodies. You can adjust the thickness of this layer based on how cold it is and how hard you are working. If you feel yourself sweating, take this layer off before you get soaked. Your outer layer is your shell. This protects you from wind, snow, and moisture. A good shell keeps the elements out and lets the moisture from your base layer escape. Hard shells give the most protection and soft shells give more breathability so pick based on the conditions. The goal is to stay warm and dry without overheating. Add layers when you stop moving and remove layers right when you start to sweat. Do not wait until you are drenched because your body will dump heat fast once you stop. Layering is not complicated. You just need the right pieces and a little awareness of your body. Learn what works for you and winter hiking becomes a lot more enjoyable.

  3. I present to you a matching set of rifles I just had our custom shop build for my upcoming African Safari in 6.5-300 and .416 Wby Mag. On this flag day I want to give a shout out to all the American manufacturers out there who are employing great American workers and cranking out quality products. These Weatherby Mark V’s were made by our loyal and dedicated team members in Sheridan, WY. The @leupoldoptics scopes were made in an incredible facility in Beaverton, OR. Another family business in Grand Island, NE is represented in the 416 banded solid @hornadymfg bullets while the all copper option for the big bore came from the Mona, UT @barnesbullets factory. For the plains game set up, I’ll be shooting both the @swift_bullet_company Scirocco bonded bullet made in the farming community of Quinter, KS as well as the lathe turned all copper @hammerbulletsco projectile made in beautiful Kalispell, MT. Most of our gun powder used comes from another third generation family business, @hodgdonpowdercompany from Shawnee, KS with our primers from @federalpremium in Anoka, MN who will be celebrating their 100th anniversary this weekend. And to carry around these beautiful rifles with high grade Claro Walnut stocks cut in Santa Rosa, CA from the same mill we’ve been using for over 50 years, I’ll be using a locally made leather sling from @kingropesofficial located on historic Main Street in Sheridan, WY. It is here in America that we can still find and celebrate the creativity, craftsmanship and skill put into amazing products such as these. If it weren’t for this land of opportunity, a poor farm boy named Roy Weatherby from Kansas would have never made his way to California to start our family business 77 years ago. Happy Flag day and let freedom ring! #americanmanufacturing #flagday🇺🇸
