  3. In the heart of Lucknow and Awadh, paan isn’t just consumed — it’s cherished. A symbol of hospitality, culture, and refined leisure, paan is considered a shauq (hobby), not just a habit. Whether it’s a festive gathering or a casual visit, no welcome is complete without offering paan — to skip it would be nothing short of rude. Paan traditions run deep. Husbands would lovingly give their wives a special allowance known as Kharch-e-Pandaan, meant solely for paan. And the elegance extended to the very tools used — from the ornate paandaan reserved for parties to the smaller ones for daily use, each utensil carried significance. There were also pitaris, pandaniyas, khasdaans for serving, and the ugaldaan for spitting, always used with such grace that no one would notice.
