The welcome was always ceremonial: a full aarti with a lit deep, while Sonu or one of the children blew the conch shell. It made arriving home feel festive, joyful, and deeply special. Then, barefoot, we would step into the drawing room with its gleaming terrazzo floors. The first sensation was always the coolness beneath our feet, followed by the sight of sunlight streaming through large windows, filling the room with air, light, and views of the lush garden beyond. Waiting for us would be a brass tray carrying a pot of fragrant Lopchu tea and two battered old tins filled with biscuits from the Burma Biscuit Company. I may not carry out the aarti when guests arrive at our home—though perhaps I should—but the rest of the ritual survives. And with it, a little piece of that warm Lucknow welcome.   1. This balcony has always been my little retreat, and I wanted to give it a makeover that feels warm, rooted, and timeless. Instead of going for tiles, I decided to hand-paint my floor — and trust me, it was one of the most satisfying DIY projects I’ve done! 🎨 Here’s how I brought this floor to life: 1️⃣ Prepping the surface – Cleaned the floor thoroughly and made sure there was no dust or grease and sanded it with 80 grit sandpaper. ( If you have highly glossy tiles then use 120-150 grit sandpaper.) 2️⃣ Priming – Applied Asian paints tile primer to ensure long-lasting adhesion and a smooth base. 3️⃣ Base coat – Painted the floor in Indigo Floor Emulsion Platinum Series (Terracotta color) for that earthy, rustic feel. I gave 3 coats of paint and waited for 8 hours in between each coat. 4️⃣ Marking & taping – Measured carefully and used painter’s tape to get neat lines on the edges. 5️⃣ Motifs & detailing – Using Indigo Floor Emulsion Platinum Series in White, I hand-painted motifs inspired by Athan gudi tiles from Tamil Nadu. 🌸 These heritage tiles are handmade using natural materials and are known for their bold colors and floral patterns. I wanted to bring a little piece of that timeless design into my home. They are blending well with my jharokha mud wall on the balcony. 6️⃣ Sealing – Finished with Indigo Clear Coat for durability, shine, and easy maintenance. It adds protection to the surface. If it's a high traffic area then a coat of PU is preferable instead of clear coat. ⚠️ Do not skip any of the steps otherwise the paint will chip off. And just like that, my balcony floor transformed into a designer-style space that carries both tradition and creativity. 💡 This project reminded me that you don’t always need expensive tiles — sometimes, all it takes is paint, patience, and a bit of inspiration from our rich Indian crafts. Dragon fruit care is important before summer heat hits so the ideal time to do this is feb- march. I was dreading this task but I am glad I did it right on time.
