Try it once… and you’ll keep making it on repeat. Save it ⇢ Try it ⇢ Share the love! Recipe Ingredients 1cup rice rava/ idli rava 1 tbsp oil ½ tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp udad dal (split black gram) 1 tsp chana dal (split bengal gram) few curry leaves, finely chopped ½ cup fresh coconut, grated 2 cups of hot water Salt to taste Instructions Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, udad dal, chana dal, chopped curry leaves. Saute for few seconds. Add rice rava and saute on low flame for 4 to 5 minutes. Next, add 2 cups of hot water. Mix well. Add grated coconut and salt. Mix well till all the water is absorbed by the rice rava and a dough is formed. Turn off the heat and allow this to cool slightly. When the mixture is hot enough to handle, pinch a lemon sized portion and roll between your palms to form a small ball. Make a small depression with your thumb in the middle of the dumpling. Similarly make rest of the dumplings from the remaining dough. Boil water in a steamer. Place all the pundis (dumplings) on the greased steamer plate and steam them for 15 minutes on medium heat. Kudu ta Saar/ Horsegram Saar/ Huruli Saaru / Huruli Kaalu Saaru — a humble, nourishing saar made with horsegram — was once a comforting winter staple in many coastal homes. Do try this Kudu ta Saar and keep these traditional flavours alive in your kitchen. Ingredients ¾ cup horsegram (kudu) 5–6 dry red chillies 4 tsp coriander seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 4–5 black peppercorns ½ cup fresh coconut Marble-sized ball of tamarind ½ tsp jaggery Salt to taste Water as required For tempering 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 8 to 10 cloves of garlic, crushed few curry leaves Instructions Wash the horsegram well. Soak it overnight or for at least 5 to 6 hours. Transfer to a pressure cooker with enough water and a little salt. Pressure cook for 7–8 whistles until soft. Strain and reserve the cooking stock — this will form the base of the saar. For the masala paste, In a pan, lightly roast, Dry red chillies, Coriander seeds, Cumin seeds, black peppercorns. Allow to cool slightly. In a mixer jar, add roasted spices, fresh coconut, tamarind and ½ cup cooked horsegram. Add a little water and grind to a smooth paste. To make the saar, in a pot, add the reserved horsegram stock. Add the ground masala paste and mix well. Add salt and jaggery. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for a few minutes until flavours blend. For tempering, Heat coconut oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds. Add crushed garlic and curry leaves. Pour this over the saar. Marigowda who revolutionize the crop development in Karnataka, we celebrate Aug 8 as "Horticulture Day" and this day is also celebrated as "M.H.Marigowda Foundation Day"(Dr Manmohan Attavar is the President of M.H. Marigowda Horticultural Education and Research Foundation). Honoured with a title of “Jewel of Horticulture”, he born on Aug 8, 1916 in T. Narasipura (of Mysur District). As a horticultural expert, he had dedicated his life for the development of the field of Horticulture, as it would help in uplifting farmers and provide healthy food for the society as a whole. He advocated Dry Land Horticulture and the principals and practices of these technologies were demonstrated in most of the farms started by him. It is said that this actually inspired most of the state the farmers to practice Dry Land Horticulture on vast dry and drought prone tracts of the state. Through his multifarious achievements and feats, the state of Karnataka became the “Horticultural State of India”, and Dr. Marigowda’s name became immortal in the annals of Horticulture development in Karnataka.
