  1. ‘A Folk Ritual in Decline’ Ravan Kata My cycling journey took me to Bishnupur, West Bengal, a town famed for its exquisite terracotta temples dating back to the 1600s. As I explored its architectural legacy, I was drawn into a vanishing cultural tradition: Ravan Kata a folk dance drama rooted in the Ramayana. Performed during Durga Puja & Dussehra, Ravan Kata enacts the slaying of Ravana, a dramatic retelling that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. What sets it apart is its deep connection to local tribal interpretations & oral traditions. The performers wear handcrafted wooden masks & vibrant costumes made from dyed jute fibres, each design loaded with symbolism passed down through generations. The masks shown in these images are of Vibhishana, Jambavan, Hanuman & Sugriva are worn by dancers who embody these mythic allies in the battle against Ravana. Once central to village festivities, this powerful art form now struggles for survival, dwindling audiences, lack of funding & waning interest pose a threat to its continuity. Yet cultural groups and community efforts are keeping its flame alive through workshops & stage performances. For me documenting Ravan Kata was more than photography, it was a way to witness how ancient stories survive, sometimes quietly along the roads I pedal through.
