  3. @paulinelindborg raised a good and valid point in her stories yesterday where she called out @ellosofficial for reposting a insta vs reality post from another large influencer. (Her full story is saved in a highlight on her page, in Swedish, go watch it!) Despite a lot of people voicing their protests to this kind of post I still can’t see Ellos taking this seriously. And there are too many people who don’t fully understand why this is harmful and not welcome as a body positive statement. The thing is, when you post a insta vs reality photo you mimic the mechanism and ideas that before and after photos uphold. That there is a right and a wrong, a perfect and imperfect. And while skinny people have the ability and privilege to morph in and out of these two states as they see fit, fatter people don’t. Therefor fatter bodies are again reminded that they are the losers in this game, the perpetual “imperfect”. Body positivity is a trend, and influencers want to be a part of that. But they also don’t want to let go of their perfect aesthetic, so they do both, and it profits no one but the creators. It certainly does not profit the body positive movement or the people who consider this a safe space. People voice their excitement that these “perfect people” are also human, someone they can relate to. And while it’s important to tear down the unrealistic ideas of perfection that we are surrounded by, there are far better ways of doing this besides this insta vs reality trend. What they are doing is like Pauline says, not revolutionary. When we criticize the trend it is not to eliminate the space that shows us that people are human, and it is not an attempt to reserve this space solely for ourselves. It is because this type of trend has limitations, and it’s harming people in marginalized bodies. A bigger space for all bodies is a space that is free of comparisons and limitations. Real change comes when we abandon the perfect ideal altogether and show ourselves more genuinely without safety nets. In simpler terms there’s is no need for a insta vs reality post if your post are grounded in reality. I can’t morph in and out of privilege, this is who I am.
