According to research published in the Lancet Global Health, there is a deficit of research in Africa, which is consistent with the poor quality of mental health care on the continent and the lack of attention given to the issue by many Africans and their governments. The Lancet Global Health researches shows that there is scarcity of research in Africa which mirrors the weakness of mental health services on the continent and the blind eye turned to the problem by many Africans and their governments. Africa has 1·4 mental health workers per 100 000 people, compared with a global average of 9·0 13 per 100 000, and also performs relatively poorly with regard to the number of psychiatrists, the number of hospital beds for patients with mental illness, and the coverage of outpatient facilities. Partly as a consequence, the proportion of Africans who receive treatment for mental health problems is extremely low. Mental health problems appear to be increasing in importance in Africa. And this is absolutely a red flag not be ignored at any cost! People get sick every day, thus it is imperative that mental health stakeholders handle this issue seriously rather than waiting to celebrate global mental health special days.
