  1. This king cobra is a snake eater from Southern Thailand made a meal of this green rat snake - the red-tailed racer. I sped up this video to 6x speed and added some different music. Maybe more fun to watch at this speed, you could see the other one like it by searching for "King cobra snake eating red tailed racer" for the slow version. I got lucky to get here just as this big king cobra snake was already well into eating this also big red-tailed racer (rat snake). I was less than one foot away from the king cobra here. When snakes are eating there isn't a lot that can bother them. Well, not a lot they can do. Especially when a snake eats a snake and has 2 meters of snake to get down his throat. He still had another meter of this red-tailed racer snake to go and the racer snake's tail was wrapped around a rock. So, it was slow going. The red-tailed racer he is eating was one of my favorite snakes here - a BEAUTIFUL snake. They puff up vertically when agitated - opposite of cobras. They are really cool snakes. Ophiophagus hannah is the scientific name of this impressive snake. Ophiophagus meaning - snake eater. They can grow to 6 meters in length and about 55 cm in girth. This is the largest venomous snake in the world. The head is large and has large shield scales. The scales are smooth. Color variation includes brown, olive green, black. There is usually some banding toward the tail-half of the snake. King cobras are active during the day or night, and have a wide range of territory in which they roam - around 10km square. Though it is called a terrestrial snake, you shouldn't be surprised to see it climbing in trees. It is thought to sleep in trees as well as between large rocks. They are said to travel dry streambeds often, and use them as a sort of highway for frequent trips. These cobras have been found up to 2,135 meters in elevation, all the way down to sea-level. They love deep forest, near streams, and bamboo patches. They are primarily snake eaters, but I have seen them eat monitors over 1 meter in length as well. the female builds a nest - usually of piled bamboo leaves - and guards the eggs which has an average of 20-51 eggs. Hatchlings measure 43-48 cm, and are black with yellow or white bands which go from tail to the tip of nose. The large venom glands and thick front fangs on these elapids make a bite from this snake potentially fatal. Before this snake strikes it hoods and raises up off the ground to a height equal to 1/3 its body length. King cobras range throughout southeast Asia and also inhabit India and southern China. Anyway. I just lucked into this king cobra chowing down and doing so very close to the fence.   2. Wild caught Thailand 2.2 meter king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) found in a fishing trap two days before we release it here. This king had absolutely no energy at all when we found it, and it may have spent up to 24 hours in a very small bag while being dipped in the runoff from the lake, and the cold rain constantly. I didn't know if the snake would even live long after we found it. I took it home in a snake bag to Krabi, Thailand. It didn't move for a day at all. I couldn't even sense it was breathing. On the second day it gave me a little hiss when I poked it and that was great news. At least it had the energy to hiss! I put it in the plastic box and sealed it - cutting the top of the bag so it could get free and into the box. When we open the box, it is still in the bag too. I let it relax all day and then my buddy Michael came from the UK for some herping, and we let it go together here right where it was found. My snake hook here is too small to be working with a king this size. I have used the same hook with rat snakes of 3 meters with no problem, but the king cobra is a different sort of snake. Especially any king cobra under 4 meters or so. They are super fast and quite unpredictable. I've never worked with mambas, but to me this is the closest thing to a mamba we have in Thailand - a young king. At the very end this little king was attacking me a lot and I didn't feel safe any more. I let it go right there. At the end of the clip you can see the slow motion attack and I freeze-frame it at the end for you. It missed me by a couple inches. Maybe 2? My real problem here is that my snake hook is less than a meter long, and it needed to be 42 inches or so. If I handle a king this size again, I'll have a bigger hook.   3. Guess which one I'm REALLY afraid of in Thailand's Forest? Thailand forest is generally pretty safe if you don't have the large animals to worry about like Tigers, Bears, Elephants, Leopards, and other wild cats. Most forests in Thailand do not have tigers, elephants, and big leopards or other wild cats. Most have bears, but I have never heard of a bear attacking someone in Thailand. Not yet, anyway. Snakes are a problem. One snake really - the Malayan Pit Viper. They are common and very dangerous snakes in the rainforest, pretty much all over the country. They have a horribly necrotic venom. Elephants in the forest can be a problem - you should always know which animals are in the forest you're walking around in, or camping in. Camping in Thailand can be dangerous when you don't know what the dangers are. I don't go in forest with elephants, they are mainly in Bangkok area parks (east and west of Bangkok) and north. Tigers are somewhat common on the Burma (Myanmar) border. Rubber tappers get taken by a tiger about once a year or so. That's how many times we hear about it. Maybe it happens more often. Scorpions hurt, but there are no real deadly scorpions in the country. Spiders hurt, but the real dangerous spiders - the brown recluse or the black widow - are not common, if they are even here at all. I've never seen either in the forest. Bees are a problem. Don't mess with them. Don't swing at them. Certainly don't kill one. They leave a scent in the air that calls hundreds of other bees to come and sting you. You can die, some people die each year from bees. Probably one of the worst ways to die, I'd think. People in the forest are not usually a problem. I never had a problem with anyone in the rainforest in Krabi, Phuket, Ubon, Sisaket, Surat, Trang, or anywhere else. There are hunters and rubber tappers in the forest at night. Sometimes guys who trap birds in nets check their nets at night. Is Thailand's Forest Dangerous? Yes, and no. With caution, you will be fine. There are very few deaths from any wild animals each year in Thailand.
