  3. 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘣𝘺 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳. Looking back, it feels like I’ve known this family for a lifetime. They’ve been part of so many of our milestones—birthdays, holidays, playdates, and the many media events where we first became friends. I’ve lost count of the events we’ve gone to together as two families, and how much we and the kids have bonded over the years. Honestly, I know this amazing family like the back of my hand. We used to joke about how we “不可以在public骂孩子” (shouldn’t scold our kids in public) for fear of being judged—but at the end of the day, should we really feel the need to put on a facade of being the ‘perfect’ mom, even when our kids misbehave for all sorts of reasons? Some behaviours need to be addressed immediately, but these are often moments others don’t see. People tend to notice only what’s on the surface, without understanding the deeper challenges behind them. Are moms only expected to discipline their children behind closed doors? Be real. Moms wear many hats and take on countless roles (in our case, consented content creation as well) and we def want to be the best version of ourselves and serve as positive role models for our kiddos—what makes you think a mother would ever intend to harm her own child? Losing your temper with your child doesn’t make you any less of a loving mom. We all have moments we’re not proud of, but that doesn’t take away the love you have for your child. Be kind, don’t judge. Creating content with kids is no small feat—sometimes it feels like it takes two villages! I’m so grateful mine have been the most incredible support system. You’d be surprised at how naturally our kiddos take to it—they often pitch ideas we hadn’t even considered and end up taking the director’s seat during shoots—so no, they’re not always the ones being directed! At the end of the day, we’re not perfect parents—we’re learning and growing every day, often with our kids as our greatest teachers. Be kind, don’t judge. 3. Because fashion is an important way for women to project their ideological stands, you could tell who were the ‘liberated’ new age women and the traditionalists. There were two camps of women at the turn of the century: The traditionalists who kept their hair long, with bound chests, bound feet and loose-fitting Qing dynasty two-piece top and bottom. They would mostly be home-bound. The revolutionists who cut their hair short, campaigned for the liberation of natural boobs as a sign of their intellectuality, and a slightly less baggy dress. It could be a mix of western dresses, early form of cheongsam (one-piece and two-piece). And they loved a good party. The socialites and women from the big families who were educated overseas started cutting and perming their hair, and they design their dresses by merging traditional Chinese elements with the Western styles, and many of them were inspired by the Art Deco style which worked perfectly in an Asian setting as it was very much influenced by the East with its designs peppered with Chinoiserie amongst its other influences. I note that there are some disagreement with how corset has been villainfied in my previous post, but it has been at that point. And that was how women found it-- cumbersome and constricting, incompatible with their then dance parties and idea of progress and gender equality. So it again echoes what I am saying about how fashion has always been politicised and a projection of ideology. #hanfugirl #policisedfashion #fashionasideology #femaleidentity #feminist #chinesefashionhistory #fashionhistory
