  1. When the doctors told me I was going to lose my tongue I immediately thought I would never eat again. Doctor after doctor reassured me that it didn’t mean that. And while they didn’t lie, food is not at the center of my life like it was before getting sick. My already complicated relationship with it has become even more confusing. I smell food and I crave it. I watch mukbangs and drool over other people’s ability to crunch and bite and chew. I cook for my husband on an almost daily basis and love being in the kitchen. But when it comes to feeding myself it feels like more often than not I fail at it. Only recently have I found a sweet spot. Soft foods, small bites, lots of milk to pull the food from the front to the back of my mouth, lots of sauce and lots of patience. I choke. I get frustrated. I go days without trying because it’s just so difficult. But I will not give up. When I got to work today, the ensure I had left in the cafeteria fridge had been thrown away. My fault, I knew better. We can’t keep personal food in the fridges because of the health inspector. But I realized I had no “food”. I was going to have run a whole shift on an empty stomach. I decided I had no choice. I went down to the restaurant in the hotel and asked chef for 2 soft poached eggs and hollandaise, a safe food I had eaten at home in privacy. I have avoided this process in public for a multitude of reasons but was left with no choice. And guess what, it worked! I did it. I ate 2 whole eggs. I had FOOD for breakfast! OH and YES I can taste it. And YES it’s delicious. A big win in my world! 🌎 REMEMBER- you too can do hard things! 💕 #cancersurvivor #tonguecancer #dothehardthings #glossectomyrecovery #headandneckcancer #americancancersociety #atx

  3. One year ago today, I found out I had cancer. It has been by far the hardest, longest, most complicated, painful, and emotional year of my life. I spent countless hours in hospitals. I’ve been stuck by more needles than I could count. I’ve been cut open, cut up, and sewn back together. I’ve had a tracheostomy, a feeding tube, a port, a near-total glossectomy, 75 of my lymph nodes removed, and my leg muscle reconstructed into a flap in my mouth. I’ve had 7 rounds of chemotherapy. I’ve had 65 rounds of radiation to the head and neck. My mom practically lived with us. Elise and Michelle spent a lot of time in hospitals. And Donald, oh Donald, he held my hand through it all. I also, got engaged. I watched one of my best friends get married. I went to Florida. I swam in the ocean twice. I got flowers, cards and gifts from people all over the world. I went viral on TikTok. I was on people magazines website. I found my voice even after they took my tongue. I fought like hell. And here I am, 1 year later, and from what we know right now… cancer free. 😭❤️ I couldn’t have won this battle alone. The endless amount of support and love I’ve received will forever be the light in my darkest hour. I felt more seen by my peers friends and family than I ever have in life these last 365 days. Thank you from the bottom of my soul for not giving up on me and for continuing to show me the good in the world. My first scan post treatment is April 29th. And then I’ll have a scan every 3 months, for 2 years to make sure I’m still cancer free. They don’t call it remission till I’ve been clean for 5 years. I plan on making it to 5 years. And then 10. And then hopefully not till I’m in the ground will I ever have to fight this evil disease ever again. If life has other plans for me, well, we’ll cross that bridge and fight like hell. But for now… FUCK CANCER. Thanks for going on this ride with me. I’m ready to unbuckle my seatbelt and get off. 👏🏼

  3. DEAR BODY: Participants needed 🤍 Hey everyone! If you’ve been here for a minute you may remember this series I did back in 2022 called DEAR BODY. Swipe to read a little more about the concept. Well, I loved doing this series and it really impacted me greatly as a photographer and as a human being, and I’ve always intended to bring it back and continue to do it, and now is the time! I’m eager and excited to begin shooting with more participants for this series who are eager to celebrate and show love to their bodies both through the form of portraiture and by writing a letter to their own body. I have created an interest form that you can fill out if you’d like to participate, and I’ll use that to begin booking shoots over the next few weeks and beyond. The link is in my bio, and please do share with anyone you think may be interested in participating. My goal is to continue to create a safe, expressive space for people to celebrate their bodies in all their uniqueness and intricacy, and to model and demonstrate that radical self love and acceptance to others through the photos and letters. I have dreams of growing this series one day into a gallery and/ or photo book as well. Also shown here are some examples from the original set of DEAR BODY participants. I’m still so grateful to each of these people for their involvement. If you were in the original series, by the way, you should have an email from me with more info about the revival, but if you didn’t lmk ❣️ Thank you!

  1. Luis Miguel Ramirez always had a north star in life. From an early age, he knew he wanted to model his future around the life of the Queen of Tejano: Selena Quintanilla. “She was just a role model for me of where I wanted to kind of take my life. She was like the blueprint,” he said. Growing up in a Mexican-American household in Texas, Ramirez was surrounded by both English and Spanish speakers, but he hadn’t learned Spanish by the time he got to high school. To communicate with his abuela, who only spoke Spanish, Ramirez followed Selena’s footsteps and learned Spanish through music. “I remember when I graduated from high school, we were having dinner at my graduation, and I’m talking to my grandmother in Spanish, and she was just super impressed,” he said. “She was like, where did this come from?” Many years later, Selena continued to inspire him to craft a curriculum that would make learning Spanish fun and engaging for his high school class. Ramirez built his masters thesis at the University of Salamanca in Spain around that curriculum. But Selena’s reach is limited in Europe, and convincing his advisers in Spain to let him base his curriculum on the Tejano singer wasn’t easy. “For [my adviser] it was more like, ‘Oh, she can motivate the language learner in the classroom.’ And that really got him to kind of see, OK, she has this great body of work,” Ramirez said. Ramirez said the curriculum helped motivate his students, particularly the ones that hadn’t engaged with his class before he introduced Selena in lessons. Outside of the classroom, Ramirez has used Selena’s career as a muse in his own musical career, first as the frontman of Son de Rey, and now as his musical alter ego @MiguelStMichael. “I think Selena was just the first kind of spark to kind of push me to go see what was out there,” he said. Tap the link in our bio to read more from Juan Garcia and listen to the conversation. Photo: Miguel St. Michael Sign up to receive @austinvida’s monthly Cultura guide at AustinVida.com.
