(Link In Bio) What began as Paula’s (@pfunklove ) dream to share Hawaiian history and make movies — telling the story of a kūkini during the bloody Battle of Kepaniwai in ōlelo has become a powerful reality. Back in 2023, she asked me to key her warrior film project & help with casting . Of course, I said YES instantly, not even knowing the full script. To be part of a story this important in Hawaiian culture, alongside such incredible local talent & local crew has been one of the most fulfilling & creative experiences of my career. As Department Head of Hair, Makeup & SFX for @kukinithefilm, I’m beyond humbled. Our “department” was made up of some of the most amazing & wonderful friends, creatives and artists— who, without hesitation, said YES regardless of the time commitment, showed up, shared their time, talent and worked tirelessly behind the scenes all while having the best time together! From historical research and sourcing specialty tool kits and body makeup, to body airbrushing, spray tans, tattoo correction & placement , skin coverup , tattoo stencils, SFX, and continuity — some days it meant 6+ hours of HMU work even before cameras rolled. All so our warriors could step into character authentically representing that time period.   3. Wow! I am so grateful for the overwhelming love I’ve received the last couple days. My birthday could not have been more perfect. I tried my hardest to be completely present and will respond to everyone’s messages soon. There has been a permanent smile on my face and fullness in my heart! These photos were from the amazing sunset that I felt like was just for me. Each year seems to be more challenging than the last, with last year definitely being the most difficult in all aspects of my life I can only trust that the reason is to help me in the future be a better mother, a better wife, a better friend, a better boss, a better daughter and most importantly a better me with more love, compassion, understanding and grace in all things. STORY TIME: When I was 2 years old, I was viciously attacked by a pit bull who ripped off my young, baby toddler face almost completely off and leaving my skin hanging to the point my grandfather had to hold my face in his chest to keep it together. Unfortunately, he had to shoot the dog so he would finally let go of me. Not saying a word to my parents, my grandparents rushed me to the hospital to where the surgeon sewed my face back together and then called my parents, who were by the way furious. If you look closely, even with make up on you can see my scars from the stitches on both sides of the mouth and right in between my eyes, above my nose, that’s the indention of the dogs bite marks. I was bed ridden for 4 months drinking from a straw. I look at those scars everyday and I just trip out. It reminds me of how grateful I am to be living today and to be comfortable with or without make up, and I truly am 🖤

  2. ʻAuana Night Conceptual Look 1.0 “Molokai Mugler Manu” I never got to wear this moment on Saturday night, but I’m happy that I’ve gotten the chance to document it in Hilo with my loved ones. Been holding onto this Manu dress for years, constantly thinking about ways to style it with no intention to cut it up.
