  1. How to make a sourdough starter from scratch in 7 days. This is exactly what my sourdough starter looked like from day 1 to day 7 until it was active enough to bake with. A jar is a must and I use a @kilneruk but you don’t have to. As long as it’s not air tight. Day 1: flour + filtered water to make a thick paste Day 2: first bubbles, didn’t discard and feed Day 3: more activity, discard and feed Day 4: more bubbles and slight rise discard and feed Day 5: starter begins getting stronger repeat the process Day 6: I did a double feed to build strength and boost the rise Day 7: bubbly, active, well risen, and ready to bake with If your starter is slower, that’s normal. Temperature, flour, water, and your kitchen all affect how quickly it develops.   3. Good Morning everyone. Happy Thursday! This week I have been planting out most of my veggies and fruit bushes, herbs and annual flowers in readiness for the summer. My kitchen garden might look quite sparse at the moment, but in a few short weeks it will be abuzz with bees and butterflies, the beans will be scrambling up their canes, and I will have so many sweet peas that I will be giving them away at the garden gate. Before I know it, this whole garden will be so lush with flowers and produce that I will scarcely be able to get down the pathways, and later in the summer the dahlias and strawflowers will be doing their thing and we will have beetroot and tomatoes, squashes and courgettes coming out of our ears! Here are a few past and present photos of this, my favourite corner of the garden. With the addition of another two Elegance Arches from @agriframes I now have a lovely framed view from the top greenhouse to the little greenhouse down the other end. I am growing sweet peas and climbing French beans up a couple of them at the moment; and when the weather warms up again, I shall grow squashes, climbing nasturtiums and Spanish flag up the others. This is in direct contrast to the last two years which were exceptionally dry. And the difference is palpable with the plants growing exponentially The irises, many of which had begun to fail, are now back in their original numbers and have been flowering for weeks. New, lush growth is everywhere with jungly undergrowth blocking paths and blurring previously sharp lines. Our well is full again and the water in the underground aquifers which feed the roots of the trees and shrubs is returning to reassuring levels. The winter form of the beautiful, richly-scented, shell-pink damask rose, ‘Ispahan’ Six individual plants stand like sentinels along the upper herbaceous border, each tied onto simple frames to form ghostly echoes of columns of deep-green Irish yews with which they alternate This style of basket-weave pruning was taught to me by a gardener at Sissinghurst when I was at a loss as to how to manage the speedy growth and very long stems of this magnificent rose. It creates a very elegant form and means the plant flowers all over its surface while the interior is hollow and aerated Earlier supports made of hazel posts either rotted off in the damp winters or were blown over in high winds. I finally resorted to rebars (intended for reinforcing concrete) and they have done a brilliant job, staying firmly rooted.   3. It was the final week for the kitchen garden renovation 🥰 Herbs, veggies 🍆 and a starter amount of autumnal cut flowers have all been planted into their new beds. Three large compost bins have been added to the orchard made from sleepers we’ve had in store for this very moment !!   1. For me, RHS Chelsea is all about inspiration and learning from the best, but I do love to spot ideas which I might be able to use in my own 12x5m courtyard garden. This year’s show had so many small space garden takeaways. From painted filing cabinet planters in the @seasaltcornwall Painted Garden by Lynn James to the mini corten steel herb planter and containerised crab apple trees in the @alzheimerssoc balcony garden, lightbulb moments were everywhere. The commercial stands are often a mine of ideas. This year, I loved looking at @alitex_ and @odd_limited. @birdiefortescue is amazing, as is Architectural Antiques. In the Grand Pavilion, the plant nurseries are a fund of planting brilliance and colour combinations. Too many to list individually but @harespringcottageplants was spellbinding, as well as @middletonnurseries and @sparsholt_coll for their superb natural dye garden called Washday Hues. Special mention to @flowersfromthefarm for their lovely ideas, too (the dual purpose upcycled table and insect habitat). And the auricula theatre from Summerdale Nurseries. I hope you enjoy my impressions and maybe find a few features for your own gardens here. Remember, you can still find affordable vintage pieces at car boot sales and on Facebook marketplace.   2. A wonderful day at #RHSChelsea, spotting trends and predictions which will filter their way from fantasy to reality in our own gardens. It was a strong year, with some of the prettiest plantings I’ve seen for a while. From delicate filigree plant shapes and subtle colours in the Lady Garden Foundation ‘Silent No More’ by Darren Hawkins, highlighting five gynaecological cancers, to the sunny mix of edibles and decorative plants in The Eden Project Bring Me Sunshine garden, there was a lighter touch. And a sprinkle of magic - the Mother Nature carving in the @cpre ‘On the Edge’ garden gave me goosebumps. Loads of ideas for small gardens in the balcony area where new designers showcase their talents. I marvelled at Hedgerow in the Sky by Sarah Mayfield and Monika Greenhough - and the bijoux Alzheimer’s Society Microbes and Mind Garden by Tina Warboys. Sanctuaries to step into, cosy cabins and rustic shelters for painting, reading and pottering were a constant theme. Therapeutic growing, whether its plants for dyes or natural medicines came up a lot. And of course there are charitable causes, education and campaigning at the heart of the show. The celeb count was high, everything is dusted with a dazzling layer of glamour on press day (even if there were a few coats and scarves over the amazing dresses and suits to beat the chill!). I’ll leave that coverage to the influencers who do it so much better than I can. I forgot to take even take one selfie, I was so engrossed!   3. 🌿 In Fiona’s Stamford container garden @fionacumberpatch (swipe through to see before 120 plant pots transformed the space!): “Downsizing from a village house to a small Edwardian terrace in the middle of a town, we traded a generous, leafy plot for a tiny, paved 12m x 5m overlooked courtyard. I planned to dig up the slabs and make an urban cottage-style garden filled with flowers and wildlife. But after adding a kitchen extension with bifold doors, our builder broke some bad news: there was no soil under our yard, only layers of rubble and concrete, far too expensive to remove. I knew I had to make a view somehow, so I’ve created a garden using only containers (120 of them!). We removed some slabs and laid a curved reclaimed brick path to break up the boxiness. Small trees and shrubs in pots added some height and privacy, with ornamental grasses making a living screen against a low wall. I gained the sense of immersion that I craved within two years. In summer, I love sitting outside the mini greenhouse with a cup of tea and my paints. Looking up, I see Tumbling Toms ripening alongside pink pelargoniums in a wall planter. Wigwams of home-grown cosmos, zinnias, thunbergia, honeysuckle and plumbago surround me. Bees are buzzing and various butterflies flit past. It’s my escape, my haven, my solace - and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” #GMinyourgarden is our series peeking over the fence into gardens around the world to explore their places in our lives today.

  2. My award for longest flowering plant this Summer goes to Diascia Aurora Apricot 🥇 ~ and it’s a perennial! It’s been flowering since June! Its such a pretty little plant, a lovely compact twinspur in a beautiful peachy colour, a colour a lot of us like so much. I currently have it growing in a container on the patio where I can see it up close. I must visit @crocus.co.uk to see if they have more as it has performed better than the annuals and should return each year so I definitely need more!   3. Lysimachia ephemerum is a lovely summer flowering perennial which is elegant and graceful. It forms a clump of upright stems clad in narrow, grey narrow leaves topped with spires of starry white flowers. After the flowers it makes good seedheads of round brown capsules for winter interest. Like other loosestrifes it flourishes in moist conditions with a bit of shade. It doesn’t seem to be widely grown but it’s a favourite of mine. #lysimachiaephemerum #willowleavedloosestrife #willowloosestrife #lysimachia #whiteperennials
