  1. This is a reminder that you only need a windowsill to grow something you can eat. I love this green garlic because unlike growing whole garlic bulbs, which need months, and space and sunlight, you can have fresh green garlic in just a couple of weeks. There is a full reel on growing green garlic on my page ‘how to grow green garlic’ but it’s very simple. Peel the cloves - this is two bulbs - and pack them in a little dish. Pour water over and change the water everyday. Harvest your garlic as a when you want it, it will regrow several times before the bulbs are tired and ready to go in the compost. I use them to make these super simple flatbreads, as well as in omelettes, green garlic mayo and to add to soups, pasta dishes and risotto. flatbreads: At its simplest you can make the flatbreads with just two ingredients - Equal weight self raising flour and plain yoghurt. Then the olive oil is optional, just a splash. Salt is a must. Make as much dough as you need. These days I do it by eye. Chop the greens and add them to the dough. Cook the breads for a few minutes each side in a hot pan. Make a garlic butter by adding more greens to the bubbling butter. Eaten here with a dal which uses lentil greens also grown on my windowsill. Again a full reel on that on my page. #windowsillgarden #growfood #greengarlic

  1. My October. Lighting the woodburner first thing in the morning then delayering on the dog walk. Bathing in sunshine in the cutting garden then shivering inside on the sofa.   2. A green dress for every season. From the awakening of spring and swishy excitement to summer’s floating joys. Autumn brings longer sleeves and winter gives the gift of needlecord. Both children had a wonderful first day back and I managed to detoxify the cottage - so many socks/ cheeky packets of crisps/ Dottie detritus (also includes empty packets of what must surely have been treasure and random sneaked socks). The tears stopped (until I saw a photo of my son’s friends all in their sixth form suits and that set me off again) but thankfully the cake continued (until the children returned home and demolished the remaining slices…slice…). I would still be faithful to November but I saw the Waitrose Christmas advert and now I NEED Christmas, and snow, and baking, and her house, and to wear pyjamas tucked into wellies and to live in Richard Curtis land (although only the happy bits please).   1. He’s gone. We gave my darling husband Jules up to the earth on Friday, laying him to rest beneath the boughs of a magnificent Scots Pine at the Greenacres Living Memorial Park in Grayshott. The gathering afterwards was exactly as he would have wanted - alive with family and friends, full of love, laughter through tears, music and stories. Thank you for all your kind messages and cards. They’ve been such a comfort during these impossible days. After more than two decades together, I still can’t quite believe I’ll never again be in his graceful, kind presence. The house echoes. The garden feels incomplete. Everything does. Bear with me while I find my feet. I promise I’ll be back soon - my beautiful husband wouldn’t approve of anything less. He always said the garden was where I made most sense. For now, I’m just trying to remember to breathe. Toodlepip my elegant emperor, my king, my husband.   2. Sunday thoughts. I started this page as a hobby, a little corner to find inspiration, share ideas and connect with lovely, like-minded people. I know so many of us began the same way. Working with brands came later, and for most of us it’s simply a bonus, a wonderful, unexpected bonus that I am very grateful for. It’s a way to stretch the budget on home projects or bring pieces into our homes without spending a fortune. There’s nothing wrong with that. Some people choose to make content creation a full-time career, and that’s absolutely okay too. But that doesn’t mean the rest of us should be told how to run our pages, feel guilty for accepting gifted items, or feel judged when someone kindly compliments our homes and offers to send us something . A little kindness goes a long way, we don’t need to call each other out. And just to be clear, this isn’t aimed at any one creator. I’ve seen so many posts and threads lately making the same claims about people like me “making it harder” or “underselling themselves.” It’s exhausting being made to feel bad for simply enjoying this space.   3. After a early summer bloom, the lavender is now back into ball shapes 🌳🌳🌳 thank you to my son Oscar for pruning them this year and to Jack @jd_estate_management for shaping them ✂️✂️✂️. Praise for practical gardeners everywhere  I’d like to say how thrilled I was to be a finalist for the Practical Gardening Journalist of the Year award in such amazing company alongside Andrew Oldham, Stephanie Hafferty, Steve Ott and Tom Brown who all do such great work promoting sustainable methods of gardening.  I was as thrilled to have been able to have a chat with the hugely inspiring Matthew Biggs, as I was to excitedly win this award and I just want to say a huge shout out to practical gardeners everywhere and for practical people in everyday life that make things happen. For example the train manager at Great Western railways who quietly and effectively removed the fallen tree that was blocking the track (in about five mins) and revealed the team has a tool box full of saws for just such eventualities as i travelled home to Wales after the awards.
