  2. Said goodbye to a good one today. Sage was dealt more bad cards than most cats. Her stubbornness and resilience carried her further than even I expected, but it recently became apparent that I was just trying to avoid the inevitable. My tears today aren’t so much tears of sadness, for we both gave each other a lot of joy and comfort and that’s something to be grateful for. Instead, they’re tears of relief that she’s no longer in pain. This place won’t be quite the same without you, Sage. I love you. Ingrid and I will miss you terribly. XO

  3. Hi everyone! Meet Lou! The stars aligned and I found a friend for Ingrid much sooner than expected. ‘Cindy Lou’ is a three year-old tabby gal that was found abandoned outside with her kittens in late December. They all found homes and then only she was left. I figured that Ingrid, having been a teen mom found on the streets herself, would have plenty to teach Lou about how great it is to have a happy place to call home. I obviously had to change her name (this town’s only big enough for one Cindy) so I went with Lou. She’s an absolute delight and her and Ingrid are moving through the stages of new cat introduction at a steady pace and I expect them to be best buds in no time. ☺️

  2. I tried real fresh cultivated blueberries for the first time this summer, and I was blown away!! I love snacking on wild blueberries when we go camping, but had never loved the ones from the grocery store because really don't taste good (and none of the local farmer's market vendors ever had them). So I didn't have high expectations going into the patch, but afterwards I just wanted a bigger bucket to fill and some blueberry plants of my own! We got to talk to the farm manager @blueberryknollfarm and I learned a lot about how they grow, how to know when they're perfectly ripe, and that the plants we harvested from were more extremely old (I don't remember the exact age but I was shocked!). The plants were just dripping with blueberries that tasted INCREDIBLE! I had no idea that they could taste that good. When I brought them home, I let me family try a few, but then hid them so I wouldn't have to share! Anyways, I am now a true blueberry fan, and I'll have to convince Dad to get us some plants and to take us picking this summer.   2. Some thoughts about why almost everyone in the food community here has stayed silent about Gaza. I’m not sure why. I don’t vibe with shame-based approaches, I just want to challenge some common hesitations. I don’t know that I think everyone with a platform must show up in a specific way. I’ve struggled with this in recent years, and I think this sentiment from the left can largely make people feel shamed and alienated. At the same time, I am beyond frustrated and disappointed in the food community here. While I don’t think anyone must do any certain thing, I think everyone must do something.

  3. The power of colour 🎨 I wanted to take a moment to talk about my approach to designing my home. In a sea of expensive house renovation media, it might not look so different. In truth, I really only buy paint. Paint’s not cheap, of course, but it is the single most powerful tool to transforming a space. It also feels spiritually cleansing/sealing, which is also why I paint my ceilings lol. I don’t replace anything unless it breaks, which means I’m at peace with counter tops that don’t harmonize with my kitchen, a stove with holes in the bottom, and many other choices I would not choose. I find swapping out materials for ones you simply like better to be extremely wasteful and unnecessary. I don’t think it’s chic to do that. It’s not what I want to spend my money on. I love to thrift and use marketplace for almost everything I’ve brought into the house. It is important to the spirit of my home. I do have time to do these projects and the majority happened when I was single in a pandemic. I want to normalize not tearing your house up and living in chaotic to bring in new materials. I’m much more interested in making lemonade.

  3. Today was an especially hard day. It marked our first trip to the ER with one of our children (perfectly timed during a pandemic). I can’t believe that in almost 9 years of parenting 4 children (@bri_norris calculated it at over 20 years cumulatively!) we’ve managed to avoid the emergency room, but here we are. While the experience was overwhelming in so many ways, I was constantly reminded by how incredibly fortunate we are to have such amazing health care providers here to help. The staff at St Joes comforted me and Fred and helped get him through his x-rays (a process he did not like). When the images came back showing a very clear collarbone fracture I welled up with tears. It’s going to be a tough few weeks for us, as this active little guy heals, but we’ll get through. Time for some rest, and back to the fracture clinic with my babe in the morning ❤️

We were excited and cautiously optimistic that we would be welcoming our fourth beautiful blessing into this world in late September. The line grew stronger with each passing day and we shared our news with some of our close friends and family. Friday, February 17. I went in for a scheduled ultrasound to determine how far along I was. I suspected I was around 7-8 weeks and had been experiencing all the normal early pregnancy symptoms. Nothing was amiss. When the technician wouldn’t talk to me, I knew. I knew something was wrong. “I think we need to do an internal exam, I’m just having a hard time seeing.” The longer the silence went on, the more freely my tears began to flow. Something was very, very wrong. “I am so sorry, but we’re detecting an ectopic pregnancy. The embryo has implanted in your tube instead of your uterus. You need to go to the emergency room today.” I called Josh and filled him in between sobs. He rushed home from work while I packed overnight bags for the kids and sent them for a sleepover with my parents. We went to emergency and the doctors confirmed my nightmare. The baby was about 8 weeks along, but was not where it should be. It couldn’t be saved and I would need surgery as soon as possible to remove it, before my tube ruptured. I went for surgery that evening. Because the baby had developed as long as it did, I also lost the affected tube in surgery. And so, on February 17, 2023, our baby went to be with Jesus. Our hearts are broken but we find comfort knowing they have only ever known love. That when they opened their eyes, the first face they saw was that of Jesus. That someday we will meet him/her. This story could have ended so much worse. I am thankful for modern medicine and that I am alive. We are grieving and holding our babies close. We are in shock and are trying to process the whirlwind of events that have just unfolded. This isn’t the news I had anticipated sharing. Your prayers are greatly appreciated as we take the time to heal, both physically and emotionally.

I felt this video was important to share and a good way to wrap up International Week/Month of the Deaf. Imagine being in a a world where Deaf people outnumber hearing people! Imagine if Deafness were the majority experience. The natural visual language which is sign language would be the standard. Children would grow up surrounded by fluent signers, learning effortlessly at home, school, and in the community. Visual alerts and designs would be built into cities, workplaces, and technology as the norm. In this world, speech might be treated the way sign is often treated today: as a clumsy accommodation, tolerated but not respected. Spoken words could be considered “less intelligent,” “less professional,” or even “unrefined.” Those who relied on speech might face stigma, barriers, and constant reminders of their “deficit” in a signing world. I noticed I put the K wrong (the skinny right leg should be on top) and I honestly don't give a flying duck because this is the first time in months I've been creative.
