  1. The real truth about farming right now? ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Farmers are stuck in a system that makes it incredibly difficult to try new things. Crop insurance dictates a strict method of operation. The big seed and chemical companies have monopolized, allowing them to stretch prices to the max. Machinery is becoming more and more expensive and complicated to fix. Farmers don’t get to set their own grain prices. And the regenerative programs that are “available” to help them convert? With the constant changes in administration and the USDA, they are not only difficult to figure out, the local offices often don’t even know about them or how to get the funds out. The system isn’t working, and our farmers are paying the price. And regardless of who they voted for, we do not want our farms falling into the hands of corporations. We do not want our food supply managed by profit-driven entities that don’t care about legacy. Your support of our farm is what lets us do this. Our yields last year? In the good spots where the weeds weren’t bad, we hit 220 bushels an acre. Where the waterhemp took over it was much lower. Average was around 165/acre—not bad, but also barely profitable with current corn prices. But this was just year one. Year one of bringing back the microbes and the soil life. Year one of bringing back organic matter. We have high hopes.   2. No dehydrator for making these? 🍊🌲No problem! I’m so excited to see more oranges all over home decor inspiration this year! I’ve been making these with my mom since I was little and have learned a few tricks along the way! 1. Slice very thinly, as thinly as you safely can, using a sharp knife. Tuck those fingers for safety! 2. After slicing, pat dry with a kitchen towel. This is KEY to a faster dry and more true orange color! 3. Go as low as your oven can reach. My oven goes down to 150, but 175 also works. 4. Don’t rush it! I start in the morning so they have time to dry. I pop open the oven every once in a while to turn them and let some moisture out. 5. Generally it takes about 4 hours in my oven. Often I remove before they’re dry to the touch and let them finish drying on the counter or hung up—a little extra moisture makes it easier to thread them without breaking! 🍊 Pro TIP: after dabbing dry, the citrus covered rag makes a good degreaser if you add a drop of soap and water! I use it to wipe down my oven and countertop. You can also do this with limes, lemons and grapefruit! How do you use oranges as winter decor? On a tree? Garland? Big pile in a bowl?   3. Well my goodness you can’t imagine the week I had. With a shaky voice and hands I posted about my love for canning and you couldn’t have been nicer to me. I was (and still am) so nervous but your encouragement had me kicking my feet and at times even teary. I wanted to share another simple hobby that doubles as a very useful tool.. sewing your own heating and cooling packs that smell just delicious. My daughter Courtney used to sell these in her wellness shop, @coppermoonwellness, but the shipping was so expensive for her customers so she encouraged me to share this with you. Make sure it is whole seeds, split ones won't sprout (the dark spots in the jars) * 🌱 keep in a dark spot until they sprout, then set out in the light. The more you rinse in a day, the less likely you are to get mold * 🌱 if you are starting fodder, it works best for me to start in jars, then pour into a bowl with drain holes after they sprouted and let grow 3 to 5 inches tall (keep rinsing daily!) Adding security with @chickcozy_ automatic door was so easy! 👍 * I didn't have a way to close this old door anymore 🤣 so it was time to replace it and add an automatic door that opens to the sides! The hardest part was replacing the old wooden door. * Install was super easy for the Chickcozy, just add screws on each side. 💪 The Chickcozy can be plugged in or run on batteries, and programming was also a cinch!   1. Pickled onion cups 🧅🧅 Quarter and trim the root end from 2-3 onions. Separate the layers to make onion “cups” or chips. Pack them into a jar. Pour vinegar to half way (eyeball it!) and water to the top. Pour that back into a pot, with salt and sugar—one teaspoon salt and 2 teaspoons of sugar per quart of liquid. Heat to dissolve the salt and sugar, then pour back over the onions. I pour the brine hot to cook them a little but you can also let it cool first. Optional flavor additions: —caraway, delish on its own —star anise, clove, peppercorn and cinnamon (smells like pho)

  2. Things to do with 🥀 ROSES 🥀 Part 3/3 🌸🍋ROSE LEMONADE Adapted from @anyafernald’s macerated lemonade -lemons -rose petals -sugar -a jar combine rose, petals, lemon slices and sugar in a jar. Shake, lid, and allowed to sit for 24 hours. Top with water and additional lemon juice. 💓🍸ROSE MIXER FOR COCKTAILS AND MOCKTAILS -5 roses -1/2 cup sugar -1/3 cup water -citric acid Crush rose petals and sugar or a mortar and pestle or food processor. Add just enough water to barely cover. Heat until the color has left the rose petals and gone into the water. Steep for 15, strain, and add a pinch of citric acid ROSE SODA After straining the petals from rose cheong, top with water and a little more sugar. Shake, and stir daily for 2 days. Strain into a flip top bottle and burp daily until carbonated. ROSE TRIFLE Rose diplomat cream is layered with cake, raspberry and shaved chocolate 2-3 times for a desert that I love so much I froze a whole batch! Adapted from Chicken Marbella, a recipe from the silver palate cookbook 🍗✨😮‍💨 My take on the classic recipe: -1/2c white wine vinegar, 1/4c olive oil -1t ea basque chili powder, oregano -2T caper brine plus 1T capers -1/2 a red onion, sliced -5 cloves garlic -1t salt (or to taste), pepper -a handful of prunes or dried fruit of choice -pitted olives Steps: -combine all ingredients in an oven dish -score bone in chicken thighs on the skin side to allow the seasonings to seep in -marinate for 24 hours skin side down -flip them, and drizzle with honey and olives before popping into the oven at 365 until beautifully cooked, making sure to baste!

More expensive grain will have a higher mineral and vitamin count, while the cheaper types of grain are simply used to keep your horse full, not provide added health benefits. I feed Smacks @nutrenafeed ProForce Senior. It costs $29/bag and can be purchased at @tractorsupply. Hay: A square bale can range from $3-$20 depending on the type of hay, where you're located, and the time of year (we pay $8-$10 for Bermuda hay square bales). You also have the option to purchase round bales, which range from $40-$120. One round bale is about the same amount of hay as 20 square bales. Round bales are intended to feed a herd of horses. Supplements: Supplements are another thing that can range greatly in price - $15-$100. Supplements typically come in powdered or pellet form and are mixed with grain. Horse owners feed supplements to offer their horses certain nutrients that can't be found in grain or hay. My favorite place to shop for supplements is at @smartpak Farrier: a farrier is a professional who takes care of your horse's hooves. A horse's hooves are like a person's fingernails, and like fingernails, their hooves need to be trimmed every 6-12 weeks depending on your horse, whether they are in shoes or not, and the time of year (their hooves will grow faster in the summer than in the winter). Barefoot trimming costs ~$40-$60 Shoeing costs ~$65-$180 Vet Bills: Horses require vet visits at least once a year to get a physical exam, get vaccinated, have their teeth checked, and have a Coggins test run. Vets charge a flat farm fee that can range from $40-$90, and then you will have added expenses depending on what your horse needs or if they get sick or injured. Your annual vet visit will run you between $350-$450.   2. There are so many of you getting chickens this year (hello, eggflation 👋), I thought it was the perfect time to share our custom coop and run build with you! We sketched the coop and run design on a scrap piece of paper, modeling it after our horse barn. The coop is 4’x8’ with a ceiling height of ~6’5” so both Drew and I can stand up comfortably inside. We decided on an L-shape run to outline the back corner of our garden. It provides our 8 chickens with plenty of room to run around, and is also big enough for us to add more chickens in the future. ✨PRO TIP- always build your animal shelters bigger than they need to be. You will definitely want to add more animals at some point! This build ended up being more involved than we anticipated - the nesting boxes really stumped us for a bit 😆, but we got through it and could not be happier with how it turned out.   3. The great debate... to add or not to add goldfish to your horses' water trough? When we moved to the farm 3.5 years ago, putting goldfish in your livestock water trough was all the rage, so naturally, I had to do it too. And let me tell you, this newbie farmer felt pretty cool joining in on this trend 😆🐟. However, it's not as simple as just tossing in some goldfish and never having to clean your trough again. Searching threads on forums you will find a range of opinions on this topic, it has turned into quite the internet debate. And while there are still plenty of people that swear adding goldfish to your water trough will keep it clean, I am no longer one of them. Let me tell you why. Turns out goldfish aren't great at eating most of the types of algae that are commonly found in livestock troughs. However, I will say that they are great at eating bugs off the top of the water. Fish produce waste, adding nitrates into the water which can actually just produce more algae in your trough. Unfiltered water is not the ideal environment for goldfish and can expose them to high levels of ammonia if you do not frequently change the water. In a perfect world, goldfish can successfully help you keep your trough clean, but it requires you to create an entire ecosystem by adding different plant species, or you can purchase a filtration system. We have had our goldfish for going on 3 years now, and I'm honestly shocked they are still alive😅. I have not created an ecosystem nor have I put in a filtration system. I do, however, clean our trough out weekly and add fresh water to it daily, so long story short, even with goldfish, I'm still having to maintain our trough on a regular basis. If you decide to add goldfish to your trough, here are 2 general rules to follow: DO NOT feed them and do not put more than 1 fish per 50 gallons of water. Would I get goldfish again? No. Will I let our current goldfish live out their lives however long that may be? Absolutely. I do love taking care of animals and giving them the best life possible, but I also love nourishing my body properly. That being said, I do not support industrial meat, production, or industrial agriculture in general. These chicken wings are Halal and I always eat either local or organic and ethically raised meat. I believe one of the most powerful things we can do to take our power back is to have thriving local food systems. The animals in the care of the industrial agriculture system are treated horribly, whereas your local farmer probably cares for their animals to the best of their ability because they understand no creature is expendable and their livelihood depends on producing quality meat to compete with cheaper industrial options. Industrially produced meat is often shipped from all over the globe and has additives to keep it looking red and fresh even when it is expired. while your local farmer produces the highest quality meat and smaller amounts that can only be sold when its still fresh. While it may be more expensive, it is always worth it to pay a little more if you have to in order to enjoy meat that was ethically raised, and to support your local farming community. If you are a vegan that doesn’t eat meat because you don’t like the idea of consuming another creature and you don’t want to say you’ve ever harmed an animal in your life. I completely respect that. It’s when people try to say it’s worse for the environment than soy farms or any industrially produced vegetable farms, fruit farms, grains, that vegans live off of that have a massive d*ath toll of animals as a byproduct of using large industrial machines. It also simply isn’t true that it’s better for you to not consume meat products on a semi regular basis. Meat contains much much higher levels of bio available amino acids and protein for our body than plant protein. #vegan #chicken #wings #garden #luxury

  3. Hey hey hey friends! Happy Monday! Long time, right?! I hope everyone has a great summer and that you are all safe and well. Sooooo about this 2020 growing season😩. It’s been REAL interesting😅. I’ve had some big losses and just generally speaking it’s been like the rest of this year....absolute garbage. Filling our beds with almost 13 yards of bad soil was sooooo disheartening, BUT even in the midst of the bad the garden has seen some wins. Our first fruit harvests have been so rewarding and I’m so thrilled to be eating nectarines from my own backyard😋. The veggies may have been a total bust, but the flowers have been amazing. I’ve decided I will ALWAYS have a garden filled with zinnias. They’ve been the best surprise in the garden this year. I’ve also started filling in the pathways and that’s making me all kinds of happy. I might be out of my mind for taking on this portion of the garden build in August though🤦🏿‍♀️. The Sacramento heat has been out of control this year so hauling and dumping carts full of rocks has been my own personal hell. I’m hoping to be done by October at this rate😓. I’m currently pulling out all the things I planted this season to start working on heavily amending the soil and planting cover crops for fall and winter in hopes of a better growing season next year. They say planting a garden is having hope for the future.....I couldn’t agree more.   1. Every garden is an ecosystem and understanding the interactions between various organisms and elements within it, allows you to garden ecologically. Phosphorous is arguably one of the more unsustainable fertilizers. From causing eutrophication via phosphate run off from over fertilization, to destroying bat caves and guano islands. I mean wars have been fought over this fertilizer. That’s why I focus on unlocking the phosphorous within my soil and fertilizer (rock phosphate). First, I inoculate with mycorrhizal fungi, whose mycelium is known for solubilizing phosphorous. Second, I plant a shitload of buckwheat, it helps other plants access hard to reach P through chop and drop companion planting. The flowers also attract beneficial insects. Lastly, I use a ton of malted barley and apply bacillus megaterium, a type of soil dwelling bacteria that also solubilizes P. As a steward of the land, your garden is an opportunity to improve the ecosystem or degrade it. What are your go to sustainability practices ?
