I was (and still am) so nervous but your encouragement had me kicking my feet and at times even teary. I wanted to share another simple hobby that doubles as a very useful tool.. sewing your own heating and cooling packs that smell just delicious. My daughter Courtney used to sell these in her wellness shop, @coppermoonwellness, but the shipping was so expensive for her customers so she encouraged me to share this with you.   3. Canning isn’t just for homesteaders, although I bet they are the best at it. It can also be for fun! Every year since I was a little girl, I’ve canned my favorite foods like jams, salsas and preserves. I try to can fresh fruit when I see it in season, but since strawberry jam is very popular around here, I don’t mind grabbing a bag from Costco when strawberries aren’t in season. If I get the courage, I’ll show you how I turned these into baby shower favors for a berry themed baby shower or “berry 1st birthday”. Hope you have a berry sweet day 🍓🥰

More expensive grain will have a higher mineral and vitamin count, while the cheaper types of grain are simply used to keep your horse full, not provide added health benefits. I feed Smacks @nutrenafeed ProForce Senior. It costs $29/bag and can be purchased at @tractorsupply. Hay: A square bale can range from $3-$20 depending on the type of hay, where you're located, and the time of year (we pay $8-$10 for Bermuda hay square bales). You also have the option to purchase round bales, which range from $40-$120. One round bale is about the same amount of hay as 20 square bales. Round bales are intended to feed a herd of horses. Supplements: Supplements are another thing that can range greatly in price - $15-$100. Supplements typically come in powdered or pellet form and are mixed with grain. Horse owners feed supplements to offer their horses certain nutrients that can't be found in grain or hay. My favorite place to shop for supplements is at @smartpak Farrier: a farrier is a professional who takes care of your horse's hooves. A horse's hooves are like a person's fingernails, and like fingernails, their hooves need to be trimmed every 6-12 weeks depending on your horse, whether they are in shoes or not, and the time of year (their hooves will grow faster in the summer than in the winter). Barefoot trimming costs ~$40-$60 Shoeing costs ~$65-$180 Vet Bills: Horses require vet visits at least once a year to get a physical exam, get vaccinated, have their teeth checked, and have a Coggins test run. Vets charge a flat farm fee that can range from $40-$90, and then you will have added expenses depending on what your horse needs or if they get sick or injured. Your annual vet visit will run you between $350-$450.   2. There are so many of you getting chickens this year (hello, eggflation 👋), I thought it was the perfect time to share our custom coop and run build with you! We sketched the coop and run design on a scrap piece of paper, modeling it after our horse barn. The coop is 4’x8’ with a ceiling height of ~6’5” so both Drew and I can stand up comfortably inside. We decided on an L-shape run to outline the back corner of our garden. It provides our 8 chickens with plenty of room to run around, and is also big enough for us to add more chickens in the future. ✨PRO TIP- always build your animal shelters bigger than they need to be. You will definitely want to add more animals at some point! This build ended up being more involved than we anticipated - the nesting boxes really stumped us for a bit 😆, but we got through it and could not be happier with how it turned out.   3. The great debate... to add or not to add goldfish to your horses' water trough? When we moved to the farm 3.5 years ago, putting goldfish in your livestock water trough was all the rage, so naturally, I had to do it too. And let me tell you, this newbie farmer felt pretty cool joining in on this trend 😆🐟. However, it's not as simple as just tossing in some goldfish and never having to clean your trough again. Searching threads on forums you will find a range of opinions on this topic, it has turned into quite the internet debate. And while there are still plenty of people that swear adding goldfish to your water trough will keep it clean, I am no longer one of them. Let me tell you why. Turns out goldfish aren't great at eating most of the types of algae that are commonly found in livestock troughs. However, I will say that they are great at eating bugs off the top of the water. Fish produce waste, adding nitrates into the water which can actually just produce more algae in your trough. Unfiltered water is not the ideal environment for goldfish and can expose them to high levels of ammonia if you do not frequently change the water. In a perfect world, goldfish can successfully help you keep your trough clean, but it requires you to create an entire ecosystem by adding different plant species, or you can purchase a filtration system. We have had our goldfish for going on 3 years now, and I'm honestly shocked they are still alive😅. I have not created an ecosystem nor have I put in a filtration system. I do, however, clean our trough out weekly and add fresh water to it daily, so long story short, even with goldfish, I'm still having to maintain our trough on a regular basis. If you decide to add goldfish to your trough, here are 2 general rules to follow: DO NOT feed them and do not put more than 1 fish per 50 gallons of water. Would I get goldfish again? No. Will I let our current goldfish live out their lives however long that may be? Absolutely. This moment has been a long time coming as I’ve dreamt of having a greenhouse for years! *This is the @yardistry.structures cedar greenhouse from Costco in largest of the 3 available sizes the offer (8ft x 9.7ft).   3. Hey hey hey friends! Happy Monday! Long time, right?! I hope everyone has a great summer and that you are all safe and well. Sooooo about this 2020 growing season😩. It’s been REAL interesting😅. I’ve had some big losses and just generally speaking it’s been like the rest of this year....absolute garbage. Filling our beds with almost 13 yards of bad soil was sooooo disheartening, BUT even in the midst of the bad the garden has seen some wins. Our first fruit harvests have been so rewarding and I’m so thrilled to be eating nectarines from my own backyard😋. The veggies may have been a total bust, but the flowers have been amazing. I’ve decided I will ALWAYS have a garden filled with zinnias. They’ve been the best surprise in the garden this year. I’ve also started filling in the pathways and that’s making me all kinds of happy. I might be out of my mind for taking on this portion of the garden build in August though🤦🏿‍♀️. The Sacramento heat has been out of control this year so hauling and dumping carts full of rocks has been my own personal hell. I’m hoping to be done by October at this rate😓. I’m currently pulling out all the things I planted this season to start working on heavily amending the soil and planting cover crops for fall and winter in hopes of a better growing season next year. They say planting a garden is having hope for the future.....I couldn’t agree more.   2. It’s true… when I started working on this candle fireplace, I had no idea what the outcome would look like until I started putting the trim on. All I knew was that it needed a hearth that appeared like it was an extension of the original lion head mantle. After getting several decorative wood trim pieces, it all came together beautifully after staining to a perfect color. Sometimes I feel like Michael Scott when he said “Sometimes I start a sentence and I don’t know where it’s going” 🤣

  3. This is a recurring conversation for me 😍 In all seriousness, I do take into consideration structural integrity and practicality when they give me their feedback. But sometimes the men just don’t see the vision. I’ve talked to probably 10 contractors trying to find the right one execute my design, and luckily I was able to hire my pool builder’s sub contractors!

As photographers, there’s that moment before the subject walks into the room where you’ve prepared everything possible, worked out the lighting, the different setups, maybe some poses and expressions. You’re left there with your thoughts, and more vitally, your nerves. I’ve photographed Senator Sanders a couple of times already. He has a book coming out in a couple of weeks that features one of those photos on the cover. So, we had some history and I’d made a fair number of pretty good pictures from those sessions. When working out ideas for these shoots, there’s always that specter of the previous photos hanging over you, that fear of repeating yourself and falling back into the well-worn groove of what you’ve done before and leaving an opportunity on the table to do something new. What I knew is that I wanted some energy from him, that I wanted to push him a bit and capture something more than we’d done previously. But standing there in those moments before he walked into the room, that fear creeps in, the worry that you’ll ask too much, that the photo session will be over before it even gets started. But what I’ve learned is that what’s even worse than that fear, is the regret of not doing it, of standing in an empty room afterwards wondering what might’ve been. And so, I explained what I was looking for as he sat across from me at a table, and he gave me one good try on the very first shot I took. None of the next dozen or so looked real, but for a moment, he was yelling (at least, looking like he was yelling) and we made a picture, unlike all of the others.   1. This past weekend was a special occasion for my kids as they celebrated their birthdays with their dad. Ashton had his Golden Birthday, turning 15 on the 15th, while Kayla had a pre-19th birthday celebration. They invited around 50 of their closest friends 🤣😂, which meant I had to be on my best behavior as a mom to ensure everyone was having a good time while being responsible. Celebrating my kids' summer birthdays has always been a special occasion for our family. We have a tradition of hosting at the park or backyard parties since they were born, which are filled with laughter, fun, and delicious food. These parties are a time for us to come together and enjoy each other's company, and I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. My kids love these backyard jams, and I will continue to throw them as long as they want me to.   2. All I want for Christmas is a #bigbrownbat ! This little sweetie hung on the bricks in a Marietta alley for more than a week before my friend Ryan plucked her up and brought her to me. She’s in a roomy padded palace and will overwinter in my detached garage, weather permitting. In a cold corner of the basement in the house proper when it gets too cold out there. Very mellow, a healthy 17 gm, her future is far brighter now. No, she couldn’t have survived the winter in the alley. She got caught out and the right person came along to get her out of a bad fix. #batlove #wildliferescue

  3. Jolie Blonde is a slightly different bat every evening. This evening she was a fabulous eater, and a total wildwoman. 9 large mealworms. I’m going to answer some questions here to save time. She is not a pet. She’s a wild Ohio bat who got stranded in an alley when it got cold. She’d have died hanging on those bricks. She needed a few good meals and a cool, protected place to overwinter. I’m a licensed and rabies-vaccinated wildlife #rehabilitator with a state-issued rabies vector species permit. Jolie will be kept in a safe padded container with lots of flannel blankies in my unheated garage. She’ll only be fed on warm nights, but she’ll have water available always. When it gets too cold out there she’ll stay in the coldest part of my basement until the weather passes. She will be released in the alley where she was found in early May, if May isn’t a total jerk like it has been the past few years. No one who isn’t experienced, vaccinated and well gloved should ever touch a #bat. They bite shockingly hard. Cute but absolutely not for amateurs.
