But as embarrassing as it is, it resonated with me. I have been interested in fashion my entire life and when I learned about the horrors behind the fast fashion industry (the treatment of women and children in sweatshops), I decided to make a concious effort to shop sustainably. Unfortunately, this just resulted in me overconsuming from thrift stores. Buying things that I wasn’t going to realisticly wear more than a few times then redonate it. I am currently college student studying fashion and minoring in sustainability and have come to learn that the most sustainable thing you can do is not buy secondhand, but steward what you already own well. Which is what it seems most of you are already doing. I go to a state school where this is not always the norm.   2. Let’s talk about PARKE, the influencer brand selling $120 sweatshirts with someone else’s middle name on them. They say they’re all about transparency and community, but don’t say where the clothes are made, don’t offer returns, and removed their sustainability page. I found their likely supplier on Alibaba via Chelsea Kramer’s TikTok videos (Qingdao Yichang Garment Co., Ltd), which lines up with their 6 to 8 week preorder timeline. That means mass production overseas with a huge markup for a bit of customisation lol. If she really cared about the brand and what it stands for, she’d show the full process. The factory. The workers. Their names. The wages. The conditions. A lot of influencer brands/brands in general sell storytelling instead of real quality and transparency. They’ll call something sustainable, intentional, or unique when it’s really a $15 hoodie from a factory they’ll never name, nor visit, and deny when they get connected to it.
