  1. Have you ever met a bigger mama’s boy? It sure is nice to be loved ❤️ . Video Description: Aston, a deafblind, white and tan dog, presses a yellow button with his foot and cries. The button says “Miriam” out loud. Earlier footage shows Miriam’s mom bring a bowl of ice water to Aston but Aston walks away. Then Aston presses a blue button with a metal texture on top and the button says “water” out loud. Miriam’s mom carries the water bowl to Aston again but he once again walks away. Then Aston presses the yellow “Miriam” button again and cries. Miriam brings the water bowl to Aston and Aston finally drinks while Miriam holds the bowl. Audio Transcript: My deaf blind dog Aston loves using my name on his button board but today he kept pressing my name and crying. I wasn't sure what he was trying to tell me since he wasn't using any other buttons and I couldn't tell anything from his body language either. And then I thought to look back at the camera footage from the camera that points at his buttons and saw that just a few minutes before, Aston had come inside from playing and needed some water to cool off. And since Aston doesn't like drinking room temperature water, my mom dumped out his water bowl and refilled it with fresh ice water but Aston walked away without drinking. Then Aston pressed his water button after my mom had set the bowl down and left the room so she heard the button and came back in the room and brought the bowl back over to him but once again he walked away without drinking. And now this is when Aston started calling me using his buttons. After seeing that footage, I decided to offer the water bowl to Aston myself and of course he started drinking. Aston is the biggest mama's boy and just wanted me to hold his water bowl for him. #DeafBlindDog #DeafDog #BlindDog #TheyCanTalk #TalkingDog #TalkingPet #ButtonCommunication #Hunger4Words #DoubleMerle #PositiveReinforcement #DogTok

  3. Here’s another example of Aston using his buttons to communicate with me. I was hesitant to share more button videos since they usually generate some really mean comments, but I know there are way more of you who truly love seeing Aston’s communication journey. So this video is for you 💕 To preemptively answer a few questions: ✨Yes, Aston is completely deaf and blind. He only has slight light perception in his left eye. ✨No, Aston has no idea the buttons make noise. They make noise so I can hear what he’s pressing in case I can’t see him. ✨He learns the meaning of each button through association — he presses a button and then I respond in a certain way. For example, he presses the “chew” button and I hand him a bone. No need for sight or sound. ✨He memorizes the location of each button, just like you can probably type on a keyboard without looking. It’s muscle memory. ✨Each button also has a specific texture and its associated smell to help him know what he is pressing. For example, his “outside” button has artificial turf and his “play” button has a piece of a toy. ✨No, he is never forced to use his buttons. I respond to his body language or any other means of communication. The buttons are just to help us understand each other even better. ✨Yes, he always has access to his basic needs like water and does not need to use his buttons whenever he is thirsty. ✨No, he does not need your pity because he is deafblind. He is extremely happy and lives a full life. If you read all of this — thank you. I truly appreciate you and will do my best to answer any other questions you might have. I hope you all have a fantastic week! . Video Description: Aston, a white and tan, deaf and blind dog, uses his foot to press a pink button with jute twine swirled on top — one of seven buttons on a black foam mat. Miriam, a young woman with brown hair and glasses, walks over and hands Aston a yellow yak cheese chew. Aston drops the bone to the ground as Miriam sits back down on the couch. Aston approaches Miriam and taps her on the leg with his nose before walking over to a smaller button mat with two yellow buttons. He presses the button on the left to call Miriam. Miriam walks over, sits on the ground, and offers the cheese bone to Aston again. He starts chewing the bone as Miriam holds it for him. Then he lays on the ground as he continues to chew the bone that Miriam holds for him. He looks very content. #DeafindDog #DeafAndBlindDog #ButtonCommunication #TalkingDog #TheyCanTalk #TalkingPets #DeafDog #BlindDog
