He was sentenced under Mississippi's Habitual Offender Law, known for its severity and impact on the state's prison population, due to his previous drug offenses. This law imposes harsh sentences on individuals who have committed multiple offenses, often leading to lengthy prison terms, including life sentences. The law allows prosecutors to label an individual as a "habitual offender" based on their criminal history, leading to enhanced penalties for subsequent offenses. For instance, prior convictions, even non-violent ones like marijuana possession, can contribute to habitual offender status. This law has drawn criticism for contributing to the state's high incarceration rates and has been a subject of discussion in both legal and policy circles. It's considered one of the harshest habitual offender laws in the country. Habitual Offender laws are some of the most common reasons nonviolent offenders are serving draconian sentences in prison. Unfortunately, Mississippi is notorious for using them to their fullest extent.Because of this law, Mississippi has the second-highest imprisonment rate in the country. Over 2,600 people are in prison today because of the habitual offender law, with over 960 people sentenced to more than 20 years and over 439 people sentenced to 50+ years of life. Two hundred fifty people are serving 20+ years for a nonviolent offense, and most of these cases were convictions for drug-related crimes. Kendall Martin is, unfortunately, one of these people. Mississippi's habitual offender law has seen changes in parole eligibility. House Bill 286, introduced in the state legislature, aims to authorize parole eligibility for habitual offenders after they've served 10 years of a sentence of 40 years or more, as long as they weren't convicted of specific crimes of violence.   3. This is my fifth shift working alone in the ER at night. There should be two doctors. No one is attempting to staff the department. Not only am I in charge of the ER, but I’m the only physician in the hospital in charge of anything that happens with any patient There because any other doctor would have to come in if there was an emergency. This means if there is a baby that’s delivered that needs help, assisting until other doctors come in. This means looking after any emergency on the ward until the hospital doctor comes in from an hour away. This means looking after surgical emergencies/transfers if needed in the middle of the night. Doctors are reducing their hours due to burn out. This is one huge factor, causing burnout. We are not allowed to close our hospital because there is no other ones open. We are expected to keep it open with not enough staff/resources. At the end of the day the liability falls on the nurses on the doctors. Nobody else takes responsibility.We are working in an unsafe situation and nobody is doing anything to change it visibly.#realmedicine #publichealth #emergencyroom #canada
