I’ve gone back and forth on whether to share this, but if it helps even one person avoid the heartbreak we’re living through, then it’s worth it. 💔 A few weeks ago, we lost our sweet Cleo in a way I still can’t wrap my head around — to pet suffocation. While we were out, she got a bag of her freeze-dried food off the counter. When we came home, we found her on her dog bed with the bag over her head. She was gone. We never got to say goodbye. It was unexpected and horrific. There are no words for the kind of guilt and shock that comes with finding your best friend like that. Cleo wasn’t a dog who got into things. She never was. But she’d been struggling with what our vet originally suspected was EPI, a condition that left her starving no matter how much she ate. Whether it was that or just a tragic freak accident, I’ll never know. But it happened. And it broke us. What I didn’t know is how often this happens. Dogs and cats can suffocate in chip bags, food bags, treat bags, or even peanut butter containers. The bag creates a vacuum seal and cuts off air in seconds. It’s fast, quiet, and tragically preventable. Please, please cut up empty food bags before throwing them out, and store treats and food somewhere your pets can’t reach, even if they’ve never gotten into things before. We never thought this could happen to us, but it did. Cleo was everything to us, our adventure girl, our light on the dark days, our family.   1. It is extremely frustrating that unless you’re planning a wedding right now, or work in the industry, you probably don’t even know that BC has fully shut down weddings yet again. For some reason, media is over telling this story and all the articles are about gyms reopening 😑. While we support the governments efforts to try to keep people safe in these ever changing and very trying times, we don’t understand why the events industry is so overlooked. Restaurants have been open forever, people can work out together in an indoor space, go to a movie theatre, dance class… but we cannot even have a micro wedding where everyone stays seated. You can have ten people over to hang out at your house when you want… just not if you happened to tie the knot earlier that day. We are left with no options and it’s devastating an entire industry. We aren’t like a gym or restaurant where we can reopen tomorrow if we are allowed - we work on long term contracts. With every shut down, contracts are lost, new inquiries stifled, confidence in the future shaken, and the recovery takes ages. I’m not advocating for a sudden allowance for massive raging parties, but we at least want options for our clients who want to move ahead with their wedding even if it means changed plans, downsizing etc. it’s extremely difficult to feel totally disregarded by @bccdc.ca, the @governmentofbc, @justinpjtrudeau and just out of mind. Small businesses are literally dying and it’s avoidable - for the past two years we have rolled with the punches, followed guidelines to a T, and i have yet to hear about any outbreak situation at a professionally planned and executed event. It’s been two years of our business getting by on crutches, while has been incredibly hard but doable, and now they have kicked the crutches out from under us yet again. We are forever grateful for our clients who have stuck it out, adjusted for guidelines and those who are continuing to confidently plan with us for the future, and grateful for our vendor community who are all in the same boat and fighting the good fight as long as they can.   3. The reason the wedding industry is so angry right now is not because of safety restrictions on how to run events - we can roll with those kinda punches no problemo at this point. It’s not because we can’t have big raging parties in a pandemic - we get it, and we are humans who understand that peoples safety and the care of our healthcare system come first. We are mad because you can have 10 people at your house for a Friday night hang, but you cannot have 6 people at an event venue for a seated dinner. You can go scream at a hockey game with thousands of other people, but you can’t have 4 people celebrate after an elopement indoors. You can heavy breathe and sweat in a gym with strangers, but you can’t even have TWO PEOPLE eat a meal together in an event venue. We are mad because of the lack of consistency in the logic. We are mad because it seems like someone just tossed a big wet blanket over the wedding industry with zero consideration for the thousands of small businesses that are being crushed, with no apparent consideration for how we could be allowed to scrape by with at least tiny micro weddings with protocols in place. Honestly, give us SOMETHING to work with. Yes, us, this 1.2 billion dollar industry you seem remarkably unable to notice. Yes, us, the ones who have to explain to our clients aka your constituents how this makes any sense, when we have no idea ourselves.   2. Did you know these stores are dog friendly? Do you know the benefits of bringing your dog to dog friendly places? I’m a fan of bringing my dogs to stores as part of training. There are many reasons for this: 1. Socialization - socializing isn’t just about playing with other dogs, it’s about desensitization to stimulus. Having our dogs be able to be calm, and neutral in different environments. Going to the store allows our dog to start experiencing the sound of the shopping cart, the cash register, the sound speaker, the automatic doors, etc. It gives them new sights and smells and helps them get used to the world. Which leads to… 2. Confidence building - The more your dog gets used to the world, the less every little thing stresses them out. Going to stores, counter conditioning to anything that is stressing them out; practicing on new surfaces, with more distractions, etc. This all builds your dogs confidence and it also sharpens up your obedience. 3. It’s convenient! - One of the main concerns I hear from owners is: “I don’t have time for training” or some version of “I’m too busy” .. well this makes things more efficient! Multitask. Picture it, it’s Saturday morning, you have errands to run; chores to do, plus gotta feed the dog, walk them, train them, etc.. Go run your errands, bring your dog with you, bring their breakfast as the reward you use, practice some of your commands & exercises while you shop. Boom. You just completed 4 things off your to-do list at once.
