  1. Hey all, it’s been a hot minute. A lot of shit went down last year. I’ve spent much of the time frozen in many ways. Usually, I can find words for most things, but what I experienced in the last year was so profound and disorienting, that every crack in my foundation burst open—and every thread I had worked so diligently to sew together had come undone. After my experiences at Fairy Creek, I could not maintain any semblance of a regular life. My nervous system was so shot, I would be in the most tranquil environment, with family or friends, and I would be scanning for threats. Loud sounds—especially of chainsaws and helicopters—sent my system into overdrive. I became paranoid and suspicious about people who I knew loved me, which was incredibly isolating. Mostly, I had overwhelming feelings of guilt and shame. I always thought that I had done or was doing something wrong. I had this fear of being caught, even though there was nothing to be caught, nor was there someone trying to catch me. I felt voiceless and vacant in social situations, and I looked to my partner to speak for me. I felt the smallest I have ever felt, and so so far away from feeling myself. It took a while to crawl out of that dark place. Anyway, that’s some of the tough stuff. What I’ve experienced in the past year has also opened me up to so many people, experiences, and alternate life paths that have made me feel more alive than I’ve ever felt. I never could have imagined what I know now is possible. Cynthia Ocelli writes, “For a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out and everything changes. To someone who doesn't understand growth, it would look like complete destruction.” Somehow, through some miracle of the universe, I made it through a period in time that many did not. I lost several friends in that time due to drug overdose and suicide, and it is painful to think that it can become so dark and lonely that it consumes you entirely. (Continued in comments)

  2. Nearly a month ago now, I stood naked on the front line at Waterfall camp, joined by the brave woman standing next to me. Before arriving, I was simply coming to witness. Until I got to know the people at camp. The love that poured out from the Indigenous people and allies quite literally brought me to my knees. The stories I listened to shook me to the core and sparked a fire in me. Immediately, there was nothing I wouldn’t do to protect the people and forest behind me. My decision was impulsive—the first time I felt a fierce motherly instinct to defend something. I decided to leave everything behind the moment I felt it, because nothing else mattered to me any more. Everything becomes trivial when you see people you love being mistreated and you recognize you have the choice and power to do something about it. To me, the most powerful thing in the world is a woman’s body. It is a sacred temple that provides nourishment, safety, and unconditional love. You don’t have to search very hard to see that we live in a society where women’s bodies have been abused, dominated, oppressed, exploited, defiled, and completely undignified. For centuries, women have been silenced, pitted against each other, and rendered powerless. We are taught to compare ourselves and others against a standard of beauty shaped by colonialism. In the society we live in, women are groomed to disconnect from their bodies: we are forced to cover up, take pills, and be complacent in a patriarchal system. We are taught to accept defeat before we become old enough to stand up for ourselves. We are groomed to obsess over appearances, relationship statuses, and we believe early on that we are not enough: a capitalist weapon of distraction that keeps women from coming into their power. It ends here and it ends now: the chains are coming off. What I’m seeing in this movement are powerful female leaders. Women rising up and bringing nature back into balance, stepping into their power, and saving the planet. Join us ✊ 📸: @jwintsphoto #fairycreekblockade

  3. Dear Heart, At any moment you’ll let go. You’ll stop making excuses for not being all of who you are, and you’ll stop making excuses not to love yourself. It will be hard, and you’ll be afraid. You know that the more you love the more you stand to lose. You know that with pure joy comes true grief. You know that to see your beauty, you must sit with your pain. You will feel open and exposed. You’ll want to close up the moment you feel something new and uncomfortable. You’ll want to retreat to being comfortably numb in order to avoid it. Fear pulsates through your veins, out of your chest, and forms a lump in your throat. When people love you, you don’t let them in. When you love people, you lose yourself. Dear heart, very soon you’ll discover doors to rooms you’ve closed off. Once you open them, there is no going back. It will be hard, and you are brave. Heart, the minute you have an opportunity to be vulnerable, guess what? That lump in your throat will return. And, heart? You need to welcome it. Allow yourself to be loved for all of who you are. Allow yourself to feel and receive. The people who reject you, it’s because they reject themselves. The people who have the capacity to see and explore your corners with you—these are the ones who have braved their own corners. People who know how to hold a space for all of you are people who have held space for all of themselves. Understand this: how someone responds to your love and vulnerability has nothing to do with you. Not being loved by someone whose love you desire does not make you unloveable. Not being accepted does not make you unacceptable. Only you can decide your value—and I can tell you with certainty, you are worthy of love. In fact, you are priceless ❤️ — I found this letter I wrote to my heart about a year ago, maybe your heart needs it too ✨ Much love 💛 #loveletter #love #vulnerability #courage #strength #writing #wordsoftheday #women
