  3. 🧠WHAT HAPPENS AFTER AN EIGHT-WEEK STATUS DETOX Wearing a gold chain in Medellín can mean the difference between being kidnapped or robbed at gunpoint. It's the opposite of what most societies preach—where flaunting wealth is the norm. That's the stark reality in countries with high poverty rates and vast disparities between the rich and poor. For eight weeks, I consciously avoided displaying any signs of wealth or social status. This was challenging: every choice, from wearing a suit jacket to holding my phone in public, from donning flashy new shoes to discussing my car, or even posting photos of luxurious hotels or dinners, was deliberate. I thought about deleting my existing Instagram posts that showed signs of wealth. During this period, I realized how much our Western society obsesses over appearing affluent and high-status. You catch yourself subtly bragging. Surprisingly, I lost the urge to shop—both online and in-person. Without the focus on money and status, making genuine human connections became much simpler. I befriended many travellers and locals in Colombia, types of people I wouldn't typically meet in Toronto. For example I made a new close friend, an American who earns just $400 USD a month! Despite our different circumstances, I felt no disparity between us. After eight weeks, I reflected on the time, effort, and money I spent trying to maintain a high-status appearance. We all do it! This experience made me reconsider my priorities and the real reasons behind my purchases. Now, I no longer crave shopping for fashion or brand-name items. Instead, I choose pieces that truly express who I am. I've become more mindful about what I post online and the image I project. Most importantly, I've learned to value people for who they are, not judging them from what they've achieved or their social standing. #StatusDetox #LifeInMedellin #TrueConnections #BeyondBrands #RealLifeRich
