  2. 1 year ago, i got firedfrom my 9-5 job. What originally felt like an end-of-the-world moment, turned into something more that i could’ve imagined. I was fired because i was unable to make a no-name finance company go viral on social media. My ideas were constantly shut down, and just as I was about to quit, they somehow found out and fired me first. But that push gave me the courage to pursue a creative career. A year later, I’ve built friendships (@flyingdutchmanfurniture @refurbishedish @thefurnituredr @flippedbyabby @furniturebyfara @thetragicallyflip @boomsfurnitureflips to name a few), gained regular clients, and worked with dream brands (@rustoleum @greenez_ @countrychicpaint @bristlesai).   1. This is always a big weekend for me. On October 22, 2005 I rode my last professional BMX competition in Manchester England. I rode the whole season with my right shoulder so torn that I couldn't lift my arm. I had to use my left hand to place my right hand onto the handlebars before taking a run, (I still think back and wonder why I did that for a whole summer). I got reconstructive surgery two weeks after coming home. When I woke up from surgery, I decided I didn't want to get hurt anymore. I retired. I feel so fortunate that I was able to live my dream as a pro rider for 16 years. I have so many great memories. Here are a few shots taken over the years. 1- ariel in my favourite place to ride, Hastings Skatepark deep bowl. Photo by @guedzilla 2- My all-time favourite move in Whistler Village. Photo by @kenpaul 3- summer 2014, the last time I rode, when I was still pretty good. 4- Aftermath from a rough day in the office.   3. On September 21st I was inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame. It was an amazing experience for me, and Sheila’s first time being exposed to my past life. Thank you so much to @bmxhof and @usabmx for hosting such a great event! Everything was top notch! A few photos. It was so cool seeing @tjlavin, Oscar and Hugo Gonzalez (also inducted), Oz from BMX Action Mag, and the super fast @kimhayashi10 (inducted as well). I wish I had more photos but we mostly just enjoyed the moment! I may post again after getting people to send more photos. It was definitely a night worth another post!

On October 21st I hosted a supper @temple.projects, a new space for me to initiate exhibition opportunities, and to unite the community of artists I have come across over the many years of exhibiting in the US and Canada. We shared food and drinks, and the desire for a space away from the pressures of trade shows and press kits and concerns of “saleability”. People came from Brooklyn, Providence, Montreal and the Laurentians to feast, to share, and for a moment of "Show’n Tell". I don’t think any of us realized how much we needed this until now. Palette Progression 🥄 We used a thoughtful approach when designing this kitchen in order to keep the existing kitchen millwork (which we loved by the way) while altering elements that felt too culinary-centric that dominated the entire space. One of the main areas of focus was the island —— be recladding it and shaping it with this beautiful Arabescato Corchia marble, we created a monolithic sculpture which became a visual and tactile buffer between the living room and the kitchen. The original exposed vent hood felt unsightly and out of scale. We instead concealed it behind a much more proportionate artist finished plaster hood, and played with asymmetry by adding shelves for decor and an eye catching sconce.   3. I made a thing. Outdoor side table with antique cast iron top (customer-supplied). I wanted the piece to have the feel of an assemblage, almost sculptural, a little abstract, a bit architectural. I have since cleaned up the top a bit and will be sealing it in the coming days. The concrete section with integral threaded inserts took me two tries, the concrete was too wet the first time and yielded a finish that was less than ideal, but worked out better the second time! This technically isn’t the first project to come out of the new shop (video coming soon on that one), but it sure is nice to be working in here!!!   2. While a goal is always to strive to get a chair to look good at all angles, the back view of a counter stool is an important angle given its common placement at kitchen islands. While there are still refinements to take place with this design, I am quite happy with how they currently look from the backside. I was also excited to test out the brass detailing by the backrest on this set - an idea that’s been bouncing around my head for a little while now.   3. I always try to treat spoon carving as an exercise where I just allow myself to fully surrender to the creative flow. I never have spoon shapes pre-planned when I begin. I don’t have templates that I use. I’ll just grab some offcuts I’ve got lying around the shop and start drawing shapes on them and then start removing wood. It’s certainly a process that I find valuable as too often I find myself overthinking many aspects of building furniture and the same is very true when it comes to songwriting for me. Most often the magic we harness inside ourselves just needs to be unleashed without judgement and we often need to surrender to that and allow the flow to flow and not be so hard on ourselves. Easier said than done...😉 These spoons were from my recent holiday sale.
