  1. the last one is my favourite for obvious reasons 🐝 PART 2 because I didn’t realize yall would love romanticizing cell biology as much as I do 😭😭 Love that a lot of people asked about the colours in the last video. It’s true, cells aren’t actually these colours in our bodies, but researchers use various techniques to colour different proteins or features in cells in order to study them so all of these are real photos captured through a microscope with one of those techniques. More info on the cells shown: 🪨 Squamous cells on the skin’s surface captured through scanning electron microscopy ⚡️ Pyramidal neurons marked with a fluorescent label (I couldn’t find the exact microscopy technique but it’s probably confocal or standard fluorescence microscopy). In the last video I showed Purkinje neurons, which are in the cerebellum at the back of the brain. Pyramidal neurons are found all over the cerebral cortex in gorgeous layers. 🛋️ The gut cells are from a light micrograph of a tissue section through the small intestine. You can see the finger-like projections called villi that increase surface area for nutrient absorption. Not sure about the staining here or if it’s pseudocolouring (the labeling on stock photos sucks!!) 🌌 The nebula looking cells are fibroblasts, one of the key cell types in connective tissue. They secret collagen and give structural support all over the body. The microfilaments, mitochondria and nuclei are fluorescently labelled here and this was probably captured through confocal microscopy. 💨 This is a mesenchymal stem cell captured through scanning electron microscopy and then pseudocoloured to show better contrast. These cells can become connective tissue cells and they are super interesting to study, but also way over-hyped and sold as a miracle cure in sketchy stem cell clinics so stay cautious if you see anyone advertising therapies using mesenchymal stem cells. Let me know what you want to learn about your cells next 🥹 #cellbiology #microscopy #microscope #biology #science #scicomm

  3. It's easier to feel empathy towards an animal than nature itself. Yet if there's one thing that time in the mountains, or along the ocean, brings home to me is the place of humanity in the geological time scale, we're infinitesimal. Infinitesimals are numbers that are closer to 0 than any real number, but are not 0. That's an important distinction. I don't think humanity is insignificant, as in 0, however when you zoom out - we're definitely not significant. I think that's an issue many people struggle with, insignificance can be paralyzing. Especially when our continued existence will be in how we treat existential threats, is it something to conquer time and time again? Or will those threats be something we adapt and adjust to ensure we don't have to deal with them again? These are big, big problems that seem to be insurmountable by individual actors. Yet we've adjusted to many other similar crises in our very short (geologically) 250, 000 years of existence with much less technology, creativity and communication. The most pressing problem is the pandemic you're currently in (just in case you forgot, we're not through it yet). Stoked to see vaccination rates climb around the world so we can get out of this. Mathematically (based on our current ways of life) it's unlikely that this will be the last pandemic in your lifetime. Understanding virology, epidemiology and transmission rates require an understanding of math. I think it's one of the reasons you see people struggling in certain areas/countries of the world where they don't have the requisite math skills from school. I don't think our insignificance means we should lean towards inaction but it does remind me that the world will continue to spin without humanity. We should do our best to figure out how to help each other to extend the temporal range (the lifespan of a species) of humanity, there's a lot of work to be done. Education is a first step, but dealing with systemic racism, inequity and finding a willingness to share our resources, power and privilege will be where we see if humans, as a species, will be able to extend our temporal range. #teachercaptions #infinitesimal #pandemic

  1. Update on orphaned orca in the lagoon near Little Espinosa Inlet since March 23. The two year-old orca (Brave Little Hunter/kʷiisaḥiʔis/T109A3A) became alone when her mother became trapped by the low tide and died on the rocky beach. The orca calf is rising out of the water from a mid-section of the lagoon but it is staying clear of the narrow exit area that leads to the open ocean, which is also where her mother died. Efforts by members of the area’s Ehattesaht First Nation, Fisheries Department marine mammal scientists and others to coax the orca calf through the narrow channel area, using boats, directional lines and whale calls, have not been successful so far. Cedar boughs placed by the First Nations residents, who have named the orca calf kwiisahi? is, hang from a bridge that the young orca must swim under, while a bouquet of flowers rests at the roadside where locals and visitors are keeping vigil. The Fisheries Department said it identified two of the calf's family pods after a researcher examined photographs from a whale watching group that spotted the transient killer whales in Barkley Sound, B.C., on Sunday. The sound is about 150 kilometres south of Zeballos on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The B.C.-based whale research group Bay Cetology is offering access to its online AI-assisted photo database to local photographers and tour operators as part of efforts to track the whale's relatives, giving the calf a chance to connect with her pod. 2. Update! Last night, Nuchatlaht First Nation gave Brave Little Hunter nearly 40 pounds of seal. Experts have suggested creating trust with her will make it easier to work with her during the next rescue attempt. A large seine fishing vessel capable of casting a net strong enough to hold a nearly 700-kilogram killer whale calf has arrived in Zeballos, B.C., to participate in the latest attempt to rescue the young orca stranded in a remote tidal lagoon. The flat-bottom aluminum vessel has a built-in crane-like device for lifting heavy nets, and it's expected to be deployed as part of a rescue effort that could happen any day now in the lagoon on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. The two-year-old female orca continues to live in a lagoon near an area where her mom died over three weeks ago at Zeballos, B.C. Her pregnant mother died after becoming trapped on a beach at low tide. An unsuccessful rescue attempt last Friday involved a team of more than 50 people who failed to corral the calf into a shallow area of the lagoon, where the plan was to manoeuvre the whale into a sling, lift her onto a truck, then take her on a barge out to sea, for a potential reunion with her pod. Additional equipment and resources, including marine experts from the Vancouver Aquarium, the federal Fisheries Department and Indigenous nations, have gathered again in Zeballos for the second planned rescue attempt in just over a week. 3. Cinnamon Banoffee Muffins 🍌👇🏻 (with unintentional husband commentary) Ingredients 3 medium Bananas 2 Eggs, room temperature ¾ cup (165g) Dark brown sugar ¼ cup (50g) White Sugar 1.5 tsp Vanilla 1 tsp Cinnamon, divided 2 ¼ cups (320g), All-Purpose flour ½ tsp Salt 1.5 tsp Baking Powder ½ tsp Baking Soda ¼ cup (56g) Unsalted butter, melted ¼ cup (60ml) Canola oil ⅓ cup (80ml) Milk ⅓ cup (80ml) Sour cream 1 cup toffee pieces (homemade if you want big chunks!) 3 tbsp Demerara sugar (for sprinkling on top) Recipe: Step 1. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray or neutral-tasting oil. Step 2. To a medium bowl, add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and ½ tsp cinnamon. Whisk to combine. To a small bowl, add demerera sugar and remaining ½ tsp cinnamon, then mix to combine. Step 3. To another small bowl, add sour cream, milk and vanilla, then whisk until smooth. To a large bowl, add bananas, then mash with the back of a fork until broken down. Add brown sugar and white sugar, then whisk to combine. Add eggs, melted butter and oil, then whisk until smooth. Stir in sour cream mixture until combined. Step 4. Add flour mixture to the bowl with the wet ingredients, then fold with a spatula until no floury streaks remain. Cover bowl with a tea towel or plastic wrap and set aside for 1 hr to allow the flour to hydrate. While the batter rests, preheat the oven to 425ºF. Step 5. After 1 hr uncover batter and sprinkle over toffee pieces. Fold through the batter. Divide batter evenly between muffin wells, filling them right to the top! Sprinkle demerara mixture over top. Step 6. Bake in the middle of the oven for 5 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350ºF and continue to bake for 13-17 minutes more until muffins are domed and golden-brown. Step 7. Transfer muffin tin to a cooling rack and allow muffins to cool completely before running a sharp knife around the edges of each well and removing muffins. 3. Wallah sometimes I get surprised by how available opportunity is sometimes. Growing up this is not what I expected. I thought that opportunity was reserved for a select elite class of individuals that got placed in their positions through some mythical conspiracies. In reality, all it takes is willingness and consistency. Many of you have been asking me how I got the chance to go on a TV show, I am not here to gate keep so here it is. I followed a bunch of casting pages on Instagram after I saw an advertisement. The specific one that posted about this show is @thecastinggroup . They have many other shows and movies that you can apply to if you wanted to try it out. One thing I do want to mention before you try to get into show-business is the sacrifices they ask you to make sometimes. When it comes to my religion, this is not something I could never sacrifice on and I urge you to do the same. Allah is Al Razaq (The Provider) and if you are going to sacrifice him in search of sustenance, you will chase a never ending pursuit. Although I wasn’t too happy with the fact that my identity was watered down to a “refugee that learned pop culture through movies and shows”, I am still happy that I remained steadfast with everything else I said. Authenticity is key in any line of work. Initially you may have to turn down opportunity because it doesn’t align with your beliefs, but I promise you that if that’s what had to happen it’s for the best. Allah works in a timeless manner, sometimes opportunities arise as a test for us; to see how much we are willing to sacrifice to maintain our identity. I guarantee you, if you put your faith first, Allah will continue to shower you with endless bounties. I didn’t win the grand prize, but if that’s what Allah had planned for me I am content with the results. To be able come on the show and show who I am and what we stand for was a win in itself. I don’t want to say that this is just the beginning, because like I said consistency is key and I’ve been grinding for a few years now. My time hasn’t come yet, but with discipline and readiness to take on a task, we can all reach our dreams Inshallah. Salam :)

  3. Do you sleep 5 hours or less on some nights? You need to read this! A study by Goldstein and Walker (2014) highlights the critical role of sleep, particularly REM sleep, in managing emotions and maintaining mental well-being. The research shows that sleep deprivation, whether through insufficient duration or quality, disrupts the brain’s ability to regulate emotions effectively. Specifically, it amplifies reactivity in the amygdala (the brain’s emotional center) by up to 60% while weakening its connection with the prefrontal cortex, which controls rational thinking. This imbalance leads to heightened emotional responses to stress, increased irritability, and challenges in recognizing emotions in others. The study also underscores the importance of REM sleep, which acts as “overnight therapy” by processing emotional experiences, reducing the intensity of negative memories, and restoring emotional balance for the next day. Without sufficient REM sleep, the brain struggles to distinguish between real threats and non-threatening situations, resulting in exaggerated fear and stress responses. This research emphasizes the importance of prioritizing high-quality sleep for emotional regulation. By ensuring adequate rest, individuals can enhance their ability to manage emotions, foster healthier relationships, and approach daily challenges with resilience and clarity. Why am I highlighting this study...because most parents, especially new parents ARE SLEEP DEPRIVED! Yes, we are so hard on ourselves when we lose control. Rather than showing ourselves compassion we feel guilt and shame. Become more self-aware about all the things that lead to your nervous system being more reactive.
