  3. One of the sweetest parts about being a parent is creating family traditions that shape a childhood full of warmth, nostalgia, and memories our kids can one day look back on 🥹🤍 Here are 5 ways we make birthdays extra special every year 🎂 1️⃣ Birthday Gallery Wall 🎞️ We print our favourite moments from the past year and turn them into a little gallery wall for everyone to look back on. It doubles as birthday decor and after the party, it goes straight into an album so all the photos stay together year after year 2️⃣ Special Birthday Breakfast (on the same plate!) 🥞 When my son turned one, my husband and I made a custom plate with his name on it. Every year, we use that same plate to serve up birthday pancakes or cupcakes with his number candle. 3️⃣ Night-Before Birthday Letter 💌 Each year, we write him a letter sharing our favourite memories, the little things we love about him, and all his personality quirks from that year. We plan to compile them in a binder and gift it to him when he’s older. 4️⃣ Birthday Photos in the Same Spot 📸 Every year, we take photos on our bed with his number balloon — surrounded by his favourite stuffies (with little hats, of course). It’s the sweetest way to see how much he’s grown 🎈 5️⃣ Yearly Birthday Interview We ask the same set of questions each year to capture who he is in that moment. It’s such a fun way to see how his answers change as he grows. 💭 Questions to ask: Toddler Age ⬇️ -What’s your name and how old are you? -What’s your favourite food/color/toy/place to go? -What do you want to be when you grow up? Age 4+ ⬇️ -What makes you feel happy? -What was your favourite memory this year? -What’s something you’re proud of this year? -What’s your favourite thing about yourself or our family? -What makes you excited about turning _ years old? 📌 Save this post for when your little one’s next birthday comes around 📌 Share it with a friend who loves creating family traditions 🫶🏻 #kidsbirthdayideas #intentionalparenting #motherhoodunplugged #childhoodmagic #momtips #toddlertime #parenthoodjourney

  1. Last night, I had a flashback to a memory that I’m not at all proud of: when she was only a baby, she went to bed and I went about my typical evening routine of “escaping” (aka some wine and weed). It was what I had gotten used to. It was a habit. It was a daily ritual I did often without thinking twice about it. It was fine… until it wasn’t. She woke up a couple hours later with a massive fever. Instantly, I remember thinking we had to take her to the hospital and I wasn’t in a state to drive there. It was the worst feeling I’ve ever had as a mom 😞 Luckily, Dave was fine and could drive. We took her to emerg and waited it out until her fever broke. I still remember how I felt sitting in that waiting room. Embarrassed. Disappointed. Scared. Shameful. Guilty. The worst part is that this didn’t impact me enough to make a change at that point.. it still took me years later to clue into what I needed to do to change my reality. But last night, when she called me crying and wanting me to come see her, I had a flashback. I remembered how awful that night felt.. and I was so incredibly PROUD of the hard changes I’ve made over the past 3+ years that made me sober and able to show up for my girls whenever they needed me. 100% present and capable of being there for them 🖤 When I think about why I’m still sober, this is it. It’s not just about me: it’s about being able to be there for them if/when they need me…no matter what 🖤 . . . #sobermoms #soberproud #sobermama #soberandsingle #singlesobermom #soberlife #sobercurious #sobermovement #soberevolution #soberaf #soberissexy #soberwomen #soberquotes #sobersisters #sobersquad #soberwarrior #livelifesober #soberandproud #soberandfree #soberandsingle #soberandhappy

  2. Forty. *** This birthday has been unlike any that came before it, ushering in the second half of my life with a different mindset and approach to how I carry myself through life. The birthdays that came before were always about OVERINDULGENCE and trying to make the most of the day because I only get one a year, no? I'd meander across the Danforth in search of the sour beer I hadn't tried yet or the newest artery-clogging creation that I knew I SHOULDN'T have, but you only live once and you don't stay young FOREVER, right? But 2023's shown me that I'm not as young as I used to be, and these genes are catching up with me. It's no secret that after my doctor gave me the news over Christmas that I was pre-diabetic and pre-hypertension, I made IMMEDIATE changes to improve my livelihood. I'd already lost a good dozen COVID pounds by switching from a beer or two daily to a few litres of water, but there was still room for improvement. I started exercising. I saw a dietitian. I DRASTICALLY reduced how much added sugar and salt I ate and fell in love with fruit and veggies again. And half a year after getting that news, I woke up this morning at 175.6 lbs, possibly lighter than I was the day I BECAME a dad almost a decade ago! These new habits have made for a very different birthday in the 6ix as I look at the bubble tea shops, bakeries and bars that I'd normally pop into and just say "no", choosing to pursue decisions and activities that'll BENEFIT me instead, both now and far into the future. But you DO only turn 40 once, though, and I wasn't about to let it go by without doing SOMETHING special for myself, so I made my way across town buying myself the things I never get the time to look at otherwise. Sarah and the boys have showered me with nothing but love, and we get to celebrate tonight with a spread from Beach Hill Smokehouse. Today's the first day of a different Casey, but I think I like him 😊 Thank you all for the well-wishes, and I look forward to seeing more of everyone out there! Until the next, —case #FortyAndFabulous #NewChapter #BirthdayReflections #HealthyLiving #BirthdayCelebration #LifeChanges #SelfImprovement #BirthdayVibes #BirthdayGoals

  3. So February's coming up and we all know that means it'll be Black History Month, where we look back into the past and understand the paths that Black people had to walk to get where they are today. But in a country where our Black community is the cumulative collection of over TWO HUNDRED ethnic backgrounds in a population segment that's growing every year, the stories we get are overwhelmingly AMERICAN. Don't get us wrong—there are a TON of similarities between Black Canadians and our southern cousins—YES, we had slavery, too, and we weren't immune from segregation; just look at Viola Desmond—but we kept hearing the same story over and over again: Black Canadian creators are so hard to FIND. Sure—at a mere 3.5% of Canada's population, Black people aren't exactly as POPULOUS in the media we consume and the screens we scroll, but it's not exactly like there's just a HANDFUL of us out here, EITHER. I knew we were all out here doing our thing, but what we NEEDED was a place that would bring us all together to dispel the myth that we're an invisible part of the Canadian narrative—a definitive source to find every possible kind of Black Canadian creator out here, from sea to shining sea! And so, in partnership with @comfygirlcurls and @blackcanadiancreators, we present the Black Canadian Creator Directory, with 350+ Black Canadians listed in a searchable database with links to websites, social media sites and niches! As we go into Black History Month in 2022 and beyond, we hope it'll continue to be a resource that can serve anyone who wants to know just how many stories are OUT there! Do make sure to check it out, and if you DON'T see your favourite creator on there, TAG them so they can add themselves to our growing list! 1. Tips for sleep while camping with little kids: 😴Have a safe place to sleep — It’s not recommended as safe for babies to sleep on air mattresses/air sleeping pad. Safer options: a pack n’ play, @kidcobaby PeaPod (we used this when J was 8mos, but technically not rated for safe sleep until after 1yr), & for a younger baby, a travel bassinet or wicker/Moses basket bassinet. You could also use a closed cell foam sleeping pad & follow the Safe Sleep 7 for bedsharing ❌Sleeping bags & blankets are not recommended as safe for babies. Swaddles, sleep sacks, & baby-safe sleeping bags, like the @morrisonoutdoors Little Mo (affiliate discount code in my bio) are safe options for keeping baby warm at night. We use merino wool or synthetic baselayers and/or fleece PJs (do not use cotton!). Avoid too many layers & clothes with hoods is also not recommended 🏠Consider weaning your baby off of blackout sleep conditions at home to help 🌙Keep a bedtime routine, but let go of a schedule. Consider a later bedtime & plan for naps to be on the go driving to & from site seeing, in a carrier on or in a stroller/bike trailer. Use sound machines/white noise & whatever else to help reproduce the at-home sleep environment 🤱🏽Use a carrier to put baby to sleep at bedtime & transfer to sleep space 🏃‍♀️Tire the kids out during the day! 👶Recognize that kids will vary — some will be better camp sleepers than others, some take more time to get used to camp sleeping 🙌Keep trying! Even after a hard night or hard trip, keep trying — the more you go, the more opportunity babies & little kids will get used to it 🍼Practice feeding in a seated or lying position for night feedings. If you have the luxury of a larger tent, bring an extra camp chair to keep inside the tent for feeding 📍Consider camping close to home for your first trip (& no shame in bailing if you have to!) 🧟‍♀️Accept that you might not sleep much — bring lots of coffee/tea! Are you going camping with your baby this summer? What other questions do you have? 3. When I became a mom for the first time, I struggled with integrating this new identity and life as a mom with who I was. Matrescence is the emotional, mental, physical, social, and physiological transformation of becoming a mother. This transformation made me feel a little lost and I grieved parts of my old life. But getting outside everyday helped. Spending time outside being active was a huge part of me, so going for walks and especially hikes with our baby gave me back a sense of myself. Slowly, I felt this new part of me come together to be who I am now. Now as a second time mom, I know so well that going outside with my kids helps me. So we go as much as we can, pretty much every day. Getting outside and spending time in nature with my kids is now such a huge part of my life. And I prioritize it over other things. Because it energizes me. It reinvigorates me. It makes me and my kids happier. It bonded us. And I’m a better mom (and wife) because of it. Going outside and hiking with your kids may not be your thing. But if you are struggling in this identity shift of becoming a mother or parent, I encourage you to find ways to do things YOU enjoy. Bring your kids along, if you want. If it’s outside, even better — because there’s something about the fresh air and being surrounded by the beauty of nature that helps. [Also, seek professional therapy to help — going outside is not a replacement for actual therapy] What is something you enjoy doing that makes you feel most like yourself? If you’re here from Reels, follow @tsliwk for more tips + inspiration to help you get outside with kids! #kidswhoexplore #kidswhoexplorecanada #explorerfamily #kidswhohike #outdoormom #getoutside #kidsoutdoors #hikingwithkids #hikingwithbaby #momswhohike #outsidewithkids #outdooradventures #outdooradventureswithkids #outdoorfamily #kidsinnature #naturekids #outdoorfamilyadventures #postpartum #matrescence #outdoorsymom #adventuremoms

  3. WHITE NOISE AND SLEEP 🤓You’ve probably read loads of articles, or heard conversations with friends and family members about the use of white noise machines for baby sleep. 🧐You’ve probably also heard some of the myths including the most frequently used myth - that babies get “addicted” to white noise machines. 💥External noise can wake up our baby or child - and your white noise machine can help block that out and reassure your baby that they are still in their safe sleep space and they can comfort themselves back to sleep. 😴 ❗️White noise should be continuous and play all night and be no louder than 50 decibels to protect your babies hearing. If you’re not sure how loud it is - you can download a free app and measure the sound. 👶🏽White noise machines should be placed away from the baby (over 100 cm) and usually towards what you’re trying to block out. This could be something simple like noise from the kitchen, or a shared room wall. 🚽 🤩Lastly, your baby will not grow “addicted” to white noise. They are surrounded by an incredible amount of “noise” while you were carrying them and now that they’re out in the world, they can find comfort in a continuous sound like a hair dryer, or rain on the roof. 😎 💤The use of white noise can be used right from the beginning of sleep with your newborn. This can help your baby build an association with the sound and knowing it’s time for sleep. Think of it as building a sleep cue for your baby. Don’t forget, adults can love sleep machines too!😏 ❤️Double Tap if you use white noise with your baby! Sleep Training | Nursery | Sleep Tips | Baby Won’t Sleep

  1. Let me tell you about the last week. I flew to Halifax two Thursdays ago to visit a friend and celebrate her birthday. The trip came together pretty quickly but it was a low key thing so I wasn't stressed, just excited. I was there from November 28th to December 1st with another friend, then stayed an extra day by myself to get some work done/visit some bookshops/meet a writer friend for a drink. A good time was had. But here's the thing. Two days before I flew to Halifax, my cousin got Taylor Swift tickets...in Vancouver. For context: I appreciate Taylor but my daughter, sister and cousin are HUGE fans so we tried desperately to get tickets for one of the Toronto shows. (We went to the Reputation tour together in 2019, when my daughter was 8.) We tried presales, resales, contests, and stood outside the building twice looking for last minute tickets. Nothing worked. So eventually, I had a talk with my daughter about how things don't always work out the way you want them to, spending thousands of dollars on concert tickets wasn't within our means and we'd have to see Taylor the next time she toured. My daughter was disappointed but practical, and kept jokingly saying, "there's always Vancouver!" to which I'd laugh and say no, we aren't flying across the country for a concert—the tickets, hotel and flight costs would be insane. Fast forward to my cousin getting tickets for $15 (obstructed view) which led to me calling my cousins in Kitsilano, who said we could stay with them, to me finding a discount flight...anyway, she was right. There's always Vancouver. I got home from Halifax at midnight on Monday night, spent Tuesday working and doing laundry, then left for the airport at 5:45am on Wednesday. Our tickets were for Friday but I wanted family time and to show my daughter around Vancouver, so we went for four days and took the red-eye home. We hung out with my cousins, hiked, ate sushi, wandered around Granville Island and had the best time. Plus, Taylor, which was honestly amazing. Our "bad" seats had so many perks (backstage views!) and we loved every second. I will never be a cooler mom than I was this week, lol. ♥️ #taylorswift #erastourvancouver
