  1. Pile O’ Bones / Nokomis Collaboration Beer Named Canada’s best beer of 2024! Regina, Saskatchewan – October 19, 2024 - QUARK, Strangeness and Charm, a Belgian witbier brewed as a collaboration between Nokomis Craft Ales and Regina’s Pile O’ Bones Brewing Company has won best in show at the prestigious Canada Beer Cup! The Canada Beer Cup is a national competition amongst independently owned and operated breweries across Canada and is judged by the top international beer judges in the world. The Canada Beer Cup is presented annually to the best beer in Canada! QUARK, Strangeness and Charm is a Belgian witbier, featuring barley, wheat, oats, coriander and sweet orange peel. It was the result of a collaboration between Nokomis brewmaster Jeff Allport and POB Brewmaster Nathan Kary, who dialed in the recipe working together in test-batch after test-batch. QUARK is available at quality liquor stores across Saskatchewan and features artwork by deaf, two-spirited Nakota artist, Torrie Ironstar. Ironstar and POB are frequent collaborators and the original of his can artwork hangs in the Pile O’ Bones taproom. Pile O’ Bones President Josh Morrison, himself a Métis Citizen, is a big fan - “I’ve been one of Torrie’s biggest fans since day one, and if you walk into my house or our brewery, we have the artwork to prove it!” The Canada Beer Cup was officially handed over by 2023 Champion, Deadfall Brewing’s Brandon Baerwald who, ironically, began his professional brewing career working for Nokomis Craft Ales. Nokomis’ Jeff Alport was thrilled to see his former protégé success and was thrilled to receive the Canada Beer Cup from his former mentee. “Saskatchewan has one of the best craft brewing cultures in the world and the success of Saskatchewan’s brewers is the proof positive of that!” noted Nokomis’ Jeff Alport. Pile O’ Bones and Nokomis merged their businesses in 2023, but have kept brewing operations independent. QUARK represents the latest collaboration between the two breweries and follows several successful collaborations, including several that also received national recognition.

  2. Now on view: THE FUTURE IS ANCESTRAL Curated by Melanie Monique Rose Work by Torrie Ironstar, Robyn Adams, Rihkee Strapp, and the Time Travel Collective - Nyle Miigizi Johnston, Virginia Eichhorn and Joel Richardson. “Indigenous folks tend to agree that time is not linear. Perhaps it looks like a wave hitting the shoreline, leaving and returning? Does time look like a sunflower, a fiddlehead or a pinecone, or the curls in your hair? Spiralling, whorling and looping like the fingerprints on our hands? Storytelling is how we make sense and relate to time, to the present, past and future. The Future is Ancestral is a gathering of visual storytellers, storykeepers, portal builders and truth seekers. Some of these artists ask, “If we haven’t gone through truth yet, how can we have reconciliation?” They pull out stories and strings, undo and weave, unravel myths, false and pseudo histories. They relate to the past and consult the Elders to understand the present, to imagine futures. Like water in its nonlinear temporality, it is at once ancestral and present in the here and now. “Rivers, those beings that have always inhabited different worlds, are the ones that suggest to me that if there is a future to imagine, it is also ancestral, since it’s already present.” Ailton Krenak, Ancestral Future. Curatorial statement by Melanie Monique Rose. The Future is Ancestral exhibition at the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery is curated by Melanie Monique Rose with the support of Advisor Kokum Brenda Dubois and Artistic Director Doreen Girard. GDAG gratefully acknowledges the support of our funders and partners: Canada Council for the Arts, SK Arts, the City of Yorkton, Sask Culture, Sask Lotteries, Painted Hand Development Corp., Yorkton and District Community Foundation, Sasktel, Pile O’ Bones and Nokomis Craft Ales, Parkland Regional Library, Cloverdale Paints, and Common Weal. Exhibition is on display until January 24, 2026.

  1. bittersweet alright woof okay. sharing for the sake of connecting and educating and just as an update i suppose i had 2 mastoidectomies this past year to remove Cholesteatoma (ear disease) from my right side. Cholesteatoma are non-cancerous but do love to grow and munchmunch crunchcrunch and apparently my ears are tastier than the cheese fountain at the golden corral when i had 2 mastoidectomies on my left side in 2017, it resulted in severe hearing loss due to the damage the disease did to my ear drum and bones, but partially due to the invasiveness of the surgery unfortunately with these surgeries it really is a trade off. the disease has to be removed as it will continue to grow and can move to the facial nerve or brain, but the surgery itself will do some damage. this made the need for the surgeries on my right side pretty terrifying, as it was the last of my normal range of hearing. the disease was pretty aggressive this time around and ate my ear drum, munched at the bones, and caused a bone to collapse, as it continued to grow close to my cochlea. unfortunately, upon testing my hearing post-surgeries, it showed that almost all hearing was gone, to the point where a hearing aid can’t be used. due to the disease damage, but also nerve damage from operating a drill so deep in my ear/head. therefore, i introduce the newest piece of em, the CROS device. in my left ear is still a hearing aid, but on the right side is basically a transmitter that collects all sound and sends it to my left hearing aid to be processed there the downside to using the CROS is that the nerves of my right ear will no longer be stimulated in any way, causing them to die. this means that unless some miracle new surgery comes about, my right ear is done. i’ve depended on it for the last 10 years while i lost the hearing on my left side and now i just can’t use it anymore. no more headphones, no more full sounds around me a loss of control is always a bit tiring i think anyways, everyone has a thing they’re going through, if you ever need to talk about hard stuff i’m here to listen eek sharing personal stuff love to all <3 enjoy the moody post-op em pic + one of my fav songs
