  1. Everything you need to know about driving to the Arctic Ocean (part 2!!) 🚙🌊 ⚠️ The Dempster Highway is an extremely remote, gravel road with few services. Do your research, and be prepared. The Route (Eagle Plains to Inuvik): - Eagle Plains is about the half way mark to the Arctic Ocean from our starting point, and is just south of the Arctic Circle (about 37kms). There’s a rest stop here and on a clear day has stunning views. - The drive between the Arctic Circle and the Yukon-Northwest Territories border is beyond incredible — unlike any landscape I’ve seen in Canada (and we’ve seen a lot of this country!). It’s also where you may experience unpleasant weather (in fact, a lot of folks we met at Eagle Plains had got this far and turned back to try again another day). - Once past the border, your next stop is Fort McPherson, NWT — there’s gas here if needed, but we went straight through to Inuvik. It is also where you will take your first (free) vehicle ferry, which can’t be more than 2-5 mins across the Peel River. - Shortly after, you’ll take another vehicle ferry across the Mackenzie River. - The landscape becomes less dramatic, and more what you might expect this far north. - Finally, you’ll reach Inuvik — the third largest community in the NWT at just over 3,000 people. This is also the largest community along the Dempster. You’ll find grocery stores, restaurants/take-out food, and gas. - Inuvik is only about 150kms from the Arctic Ocean, so some travelers choose to stay in town over night and complete the drive as a day trip the next day. We decided to keep going, and camp right on the ocean (more on that in part 3 🤭). Let us know if you have any questions about the second part of the route! #roadtrip #yukonterritory #exploreyukon #dempsterhighway

  2. This weekend, we defied the norm by taking our 5 kids on a winter camping trip at -14°C (7°F) (dipped to -16°C at night). Why? To teach them that life isn’t just about following the usual paths but embracing challenges for unforgettable experiences. Outfitted with our “hot” tent and stove from @citizencanvas, we ventured into the serene, snow-covered landscape, a stark contrast to the crowded and bug-infested sites of summer. The cold brought us closer, sharing stories around the stove, proving comfort isn’t limited to familiar settings and memories can be created anywhere. They’ve currently spent the weekend running around the forest and playing in the snow, or sat in the tent reading books and playing cards/Pokémon 😂 and as far as we can tell, they love it! Winter camping isn’t just about enduring the cold; it’s about discovering peace in solitude, enjoying snow activities, and learning new survival skills. The crisp air made for better sleep, devoid of summer’s muggy nights. And, without the usual wildlife or bugs, it felt safer and more serene. We wanted our kids to see that facing adversity, like the freezing temperatures, can be empowering. It teaches resilience, adaptability, and the joy of carving your own path. For more tips on family camping, check out @funk.studios, offering a wealth of content on navigating outdoor adventures with kids. This journey was more than a test of our new gear; it was a lesson in exploration and possibility, showing that even in -14°C (7°F), adventure awaits those willing to step outside the comfort zone. This has also been another incredible @hipcamp location and experience. If you haven’t used it before you should seriously check it out. We camped at Natures Acres, Mount Forest, Ontario.
