Time to turn a page and start a new chapter in my life.  With today being my birthday, most would be excited when saying they’re starting a new chapter in life but for me it means ending one which I can easily say I’m not sure I’m ready for.  This still feels so surreal but today will mark the last week going forward of me working at Sam Tabak. I’m sure this might be a shock to many as it still is a shock to me, but Hey after 11 years, all good things have to come to an end !  It’s only right right for me to make this public because I’ve met so much amazing people along the way. From customer to brand reps whom I can all call my friends outside of the store. We always say we can write a book with the stories that have happened under this roof over the years,  and let me tell you those are stories that can’t be forgotten lol. I am beyond grateful for the 11 years working here and couldn’t have asked for anything more. I’m  Thankful for meeting  amazing individuals, Eli, Santino & The Tabak Family whom not only welcomed me and took me on as an employee but gave me the torch to build on the vision they started. I remember starting here and people still didn’t have a clue what where who Sam Tabak was. From doing photography to starting up their instagram and website to being a buyer for the brands, it has truly been a blessing for the experience and knowledge I have gained while working here. Damn I still remember the day walking into one of our Nike & Air Jordan meetings, and our rep dropping a catalogue in front of us saying “Congrats here’s your Retro account” We went from being that small little shop in Lachine that people knew from word of mouth to being a top sneaker boutique known across Canada with an amazing following and strong social media presence  Before I babble on anymore , Thank you once again Eli, Santino & The Tabak Family for letting me steer the ship for so long and being understanding on my decision in a career change.  Thank you to all the great staff I had pleasure working with. Thank you all the Brand Reps whom worked along side with us and Thank you  to all the customers who have made working in retail really one for the books!

  2. I’ve hesitated to post this but perhaps the rawness of new-mom life, the post-surgery pain meds or even the sleep deprivation has emboldened me. I believe you when you say it gets easier - but it’s not what I, or any new mama, needs to hear right now. You would never (I hope) tell someone who is grieving that it gets easier. Or tell a chemo patient that it gets easier. Or tell a victim of abuse that it gets easier. While I recognize these scenarios do not compare to childbirth, you also cannot know the trauma, emotional wellbeing, mental health, or physical pain that a new mother is currently dealing with. Readily dismissing where she’s at minimizes what new mom’s (especially first time mama’s) are going through. We should not need to be warriors silently powering through the difficult moments because “it gets easier”. Because all I know right now is that in the last week, I have failed to “properly” breastfeed my newborn son 84 times. 84 times I have failed him. In addition to dealing with a long + complex labour, abdominal surgery, a serious infection, the loss of my mother-in-law, and missing my husband while he’s abroad at the funeral. It feels immensely heavy and “it gets easier” feels distant and unattainable. I know these words haven’t been said with ill intention. I promise I didn’t take it that way. But I do think we need to change the narrative around the many complex situations women handle, often in silence. Phrases that have helped me + may help others: -I see you and I know what you’re going through is hard -How can I support you? -This must be really difficult. I’m a good listener if you need to talk -I’m here for whatever you need Things that have helped me + may help others: -Providing ready-made, healthy meals + snacks -Offering to: clean my kitchen, do my laundry or hold my baby while I shower or nap -Running errands for me -Taking me to dr’s appointments (abdominal surgery/c-section patients can’t drive for weeks afterwards) I am so grateful for ALL of the words of support I’ve received, I truly am. I hope this post has not hurt or offended anyone. But I also hope my experience will help the new mama’s that come after me. Much love.
