  3. Today was heartbreaking. Animal advocate Regan Russell was killed this morning when she was plowed down by a truck transporting pigs into the notorious Fearmans Pork slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario. 💔 Regan had been an activist since 1979, and was known for her kind heart and courageous spirit. She stood against injustice of all kinds, and was fiercely supportive not only of animal rights, but also Black Lives Matter, and the climate justice movement. She was a long-time member of @thesavemovement, and regularly attended vigils outside Fearmans to give comfort to suffering pigs in their final moments. Regan’s tragic death comes only two days after the Ontario government passed Bill 156—a dangerous ag gag law designed to cover up cruelty on farms, and unlawfully interfere with the right to peacefully protest outside slaughterhouses. The law passed this week but still hasn’t come into effect, and this morning’s vigil was in protest of ag gag laws. Today’s vigil could have been one of the last chances to document and expose the suffering of pigs inside transport trucks before it became illegal to do so. Bill 156 has apparently already emboldened the meat industry to declare open season on peaceful activists. The government was warned repeatedly that it would only escalate tensions. In Regan’s honour we’ll continue to fight for what she so passionately stood for—a world where animals have legal protections from the horrific cruelty they currently endure on farms, during transport, and in slaughterhouses. RIP, Regan. You inspired us all and we’ll never give up.

  2. This time last year we were one of those couples putting on a brave face after experiencing a missed miscarriage a couple of months prior, just as we were approaching the 3 month “safe” mark of pregnancy. The weeks that followed were full of daily tears and several ultrasounds, doctors appointments, the D&C procedure, and more follow up bloodwork. All of this during a pandemic which meant I had to go into each appt on my own. No one wants to be part of the miscarriage club but I found great comfort in sharing bits and pieces of my story with friends and family and eventually I shared the story on this account back in October to help reduce the stigma even more. More than anything, I wanted to share it because I remember when I would read others’ stories online and how they helped me feel like I wasn’t alone 💕 The biggest lesson I took away from it all was that I needed to accept I can’t control everything. And after having experienced the missed miscarriage, what helped me heal was once I accepted that there was nothing I could or could not have done to change the outcome — it *wasn’t* my fault. Each time I share our story, I receive a few messages from people I know and many from those I don’t know at all, expressing how it was so helpful for them to hear my story and help them feel that they’re not alone. Sometimes I think it’s a bit much that I keep bringing up how Mia is our rainbow baby but I think this is what makes her extra special, and I hope that sharing our story brings hope to anyone reading this and having a hard time right now. Hopefully the hard time you’re going through is temporary and it’ll pass soon 🤞🏽 If you’re waiting for your rainbow baby, I hope everything aligns for you when the time is right. I see you and I’m here if you want to message me and share your story! 🌈🙏🏽 #miscarriage #ihadamiscarriage #missedmiscarriage #rainbowafterthestorm #mothersday

  3. There’s a lot that you don’t always see behind the scenes. The last few months have been a whirlwind managing life as a new mom while working the start of our wedding season, so I recently had to make some tough decisions so I can better make it through the rest wedding season while better balancing life with baby Mia and prioritizing more time to rest instead of being so go-go-go all the time 🏃🏻‍♀️ While all the weddings have been incredible (5 weddings done with a now 5-month-old!) and the couples have thankfully all been so happy, I’ve personally been feeling the pressure build up. It might be the postpartum hormones, it might be wedding season stress, or it might just be the adjustment period of being thrown back into a normal season after two years of pivoting during the pandemic 🥲 I always have very high expectations and want each couple to receive the best attention from me, but I’ve felt that my attention span was starting to get stretched really thin. As we approached peak wedding season, I started to really feel the pressure and anxiety with all the commitments and pressure to perfect all the details. Since my team is already at full capacity, I’ve reached out to and accepted the support offered by other wedding planners so I could personally reduce/better spread out my workload during the next few months. Our team is proud to be collaborating with our friends at @spotlightevents.ca and @sweetheartevents so they can take care of some of our couples and allow me more time to rest/recharge in between our other weddings while they support us with wedding day assistance and wedding coordination by leading some weddings on my behalf (those couples assigned to new lead planners have already been notified and I’m so grateful for their flexibility with these adjustments) 🙏🏽 This was such a hard decision to make but I am feeling so much better (and more at peace) knowing the weddings I have left this year are now more spread out and I will have more breaks in between to be able to better recharge and be able to enjoy some quality time with Mia, Matt, and Bubzi before the rest of the year flies by. 2. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently. To be brutally honest, it’s a tough time for restaurants right now. Between the hospitality industry labour shortage, the pandemic and so many factors outside of our control, it’s currently a very challenging time and a super tough operating environment. During challenging times, I try to question assumptions that I usually make, I try to push myself to think outside of the box I usually operate in, I try to challenge myself to communicate clearer than ever and I try to prioritize the biggest issues and concerns that require my attention. The key word here is TRY. I find myself failing daily. I feel very fortunate to have thrived in the hospitality industry all these years. I also feel very grateful that I’m in a position that allows me to guide, inspire and mentor our teams. Where I used to often say that I feel lucky to wake up every day and get to play in the world of food, these days, I feel even luckier to get to work with our people on a daily basis. Yes, we try and serve delicious food and offer outstanding hospitality to our guests, but my true passion these days is our people. I couldn’t be more grateful to our @kitchentablegroup teams for their effort, commitment and passion they show for our restaurants/operations. I’m very open to having a discussion with anyone regarding current issues in the restaurant industry and I’m also very interested in talking with any interested hospitality professionals interested in working with our forward thinking restaurant group. Please reach out to me at alex@ktrestaurants.com and let’s chat. If you’ve read this far, thank you for indulging me by reading my not-so-eloquent prose.
