  1. Today was heartbreaking. Animal advocate Regan Russell was killed this morning when she was plowed down by a truck transporting pigs into the notorious Fearmans Pork slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario. 💔 Regan had been an activist since 1979, and was known for her kind heart and courageous spirit. She stood against injustice of all kinds, and was fiercely supportive not only of animal rights, but also Black Lives Matter, and the climate justice movement. She was a long-time member of @thesavemovement, and regularly attended vigils outside Fearmans to give comfort to suffering pigs in their final moments. Regan’s tragic death comes only two days after the Ontario government passed Bill 156—a dangerous ag gag law designed to cover up cruelty on farms, and unlawfully interfere with the right to peacefully protest outside slaughterhouses. The law passed this week but still hasn’t come into effect, and this morning’s vigil was in protest of ag gag laws. Today’s vigil could have been one of the last chances to document and expose the suffering of pigs inside transport trucks before it became illegal to do so. Bill 156 has apparently already emboldened the meat industry to declare open season on peaceful activists. The government was warned repeatedly that it would only escalate tensions. In Regan’s honour we’ll continue to fight for what she so passionately stood for—a world where animals have legal protections from the horrific cruelty they currently endure on farms, during transport, and in slaughterhouses. RIP, Regan. You inspired us all and we’ll never give up.

  3. BREAKING: @CanadaGoose just announced that in 2022, it will start transitioning to using only "reclaimed" fur on its hideous, pricey parkas. It will begin buying back fur from customers and using that fur on future parkas. This is a partial victory because it will mean countless coyotes will live instead of brutally die, and it’s a huge blow to the fur industry. But don't give the company credit for it—most other major designers have ditched fur entirely instead of this ridiculous used-fur-only policy which still promotes the idea that wearing fur is fashionable and socially acceptable. But give yourself a pat on the back all the same—it's still a historic reversal. Canada Goose was forced into moving away from fur because of shifting public attitudes, and years of activism. @animaljustice_ filed the first-ever false advertising complaint against the company in 2015, forcing the federal Competition Bureau to investigate its lies that coyotes were trapped humanely and ethically. More recently, the US Federal Trade Commission investigated similar false claims, and over the years the company has removed some of this deceitful language from its website. A November 2019 poll from Research Co. shows that 75% of Canadians now oppose killing animals for fur, so I suspect Canada Goose saw the writing on the wall. Add to this that California, LA, and San Francisco have now banned new fur sales, and NYC is considering the same. Switching to used fur is humanewashing and a cynical move so they can attempt to stay relevant in a retail environment where most designers are dropping fur and consumers don't want to wear it. And let's not forget that they still plan to use down from geese and ducks, even though animal-free insulating materials like Primaloft are warmer and more sustainable. 📷 @shan.riley_

  2. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently. To be brutally honest, it’s a tough time for restaurants right now. Between the hospitality industry labour shortage, the pandemic and so many factors outside of our control, it’s currently a very challenging time and a super tough operating environment. During challenging times, I try to question assumptions that I usually make, I try to push myself to think outside of the box I usually operate in, I try to challenge myself to communicate clearer than ever and I try to prioritize the biggest issues and concerns that require my attention. The key word here is TRY. I find myself failing daily. I feel very fortunate to have thrived in the hospitality industry all these years. I also feel very grateful that I’m in a position that allows me to guide, inspire and mentor our teams. Where I used to often say that I feel lucky to wake up every day and get to play in the world of food, these days, I feel even luckier to get to work with our people on a daily basis. Yes, we try and serve delicious food and offer outstanding hospitality to our guests, but my true passion these days is our people. I couldn’t be more grateful to our @kitchentablegroup teams for their effort, commitment and passion they show for our restaurants/operations. I’m very open to having a discussion with anyone regarding current issues in the restaurant industry and I’m also very interested in talking with any interested hospitality professionals interested in working with our forward thinking restaurant group. Please reach out to me at alex@ktrestaurants.com and let’s chat. If you’ve read this far, thank you for indulging me by reading my not-so-eloquent prose.

  1. 💔It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kristi Lynn Blok (nee Bennett) on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the age of 48. After a courageous 13-week battle with a rare cancer, mucosal melanoma, Kristi passed peacefully, surrounded by her family’s love. Kristi was the beloved wife of Greg Blok, and the devoted mother of Jameson (JD), Breuklynn, Channing, and Lincoln. She was the cherished daughter of Marnie and George Bennett, and loving sister to Lynsey Bennett and Taylor Bennett (Sophia). Kristi will be deeply missed by her extended family, countless friends, and the many students whose lives she touched. Born and raised in Ottawa, Kristi attended Hopewell Public School, Glebe Collegiate, and Carleton University, where she earned an Honours BA in French and Political Science. She went on to complete her teaching degree at Lakehead University, where she met Greg—the love of her life and partner of 25 years. Kristi pursued her lifelong dream of teaching with passion and dedication. For over 24 years, she inspired thousands of students as a French Immersion teacher both at Glashan and St. Leonard's plus was the Arts Department leader at St. Leonard’s School. Known for her creativity and compassion, Kristi made every student feel seen, valued, and encouraged to shine. An accomplished athlete, Kristi grew up playing soccer and rugby, worked as a lifeguard and ski instructor, and played field hockey at Carleton University. She carried that same energy into supporting her children’s passions— dance events and football. Above all, her family was the center of her world, and she poured her heart into creating lasting memories with them. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Arif Ali Awan and his team at The Ottawa Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. 🙏In keeping with Kristi’s wishes, there will be no wake and a private memorial service will be held for close family. 🪽Kristi will be remembered for her warmth, strength, laughter, and unwavering love. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, and in the hearts of her family who will forever carry her light.✨
