  2. The Catholic Sick Call Set, a tradition most have never heard of. When a Catholic was gravely ill or near death, families would call a priest to bring the Last Rites, the sacraments of Confession, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Communion. Before hospitals and nursing homes, this crucifix hung in Catholic homes. Inside it were two candles and a small holy water bottle, hidden within the cross. When a priest arrived, it was taken down, opened, and placed by the bedside. Candles were lit, the crucifix stood upright, and the room became a small altar, a sacred space for Christ to enter the home. It wasn’t only for the dying. These crosses were also wedding gifts, meant to hang above the bed, a reminder to love one another “in sickness and in health.” Many became family heirlooms, passed through generations. Today, few Catholics even know what they are, yet their message remains timeless: Be ready. Live in grace. When I dated a guy way back in the day, we sat on my blue couch opposite each other as the rain fell outside, talking about the sorts of things you talk about when you’re figuring out if you see a future with someone, like where you want to live and how many kids you think you’d like. It felt pertinent that I share about a medical condition that could make it difficult for me to get pregnant. I wondered what this guy might do if we ended up together and never saw a positive pregnancy test—an important conversation to have before marriage. At first, the guy paused, taking in what I’d shared. He looked out the window as shock, disbelief, and confusion crossed his face. He finally began to splutter that he didn’t know what he’d do—but he also didn’t know if he could see himself marrying someone who couldn’t give him biological children. And then jokingly said, “WELP!” I was taken aback to this approach to the topic, while also full of empathy. I imagined hearing that the person you’re considering a life with may not be able to give you what you want would be difficult. But the way he handled the situation hurt. It left me with a lot to unpack, even after having more conversations about what building a family could look like later on. I met Brandon a few years later, and while, even early on, he seemed like someone I could trust, I had a pit in my stomach when it came time to share this piece of myself with him. Having difficult conversations is part of being in a relationship, though, so, one day, sitting on my couch next to each other, overlooking the sunny and overgrown garden outside, I told him about it. Without hesitation and with complete confidence in his answer, he looked me in the eye and told me we’d figure out how to grow our family if that time came. And then he asked about the condition, how it affects my everyday life, and where I was at with it all. We openly talked about treatment, openness to adoption, and, ultimately, embracing God’s will. It was a humble, mature conversation. He embraced me fully, eager to journey through the ups & downs of life as one because only God knows for certain what will or won’t happen. We’re in it together 🤍

  2. It’s been 8 years and I still think about it. The priest’s point was less about the *what* being done, and more about the attitude with which the couple approached their daily married life. To go above and beyond for the other, to actively think about how to make this person feel seen, to know what your spouse would appreciate and doing that *and more.* So, what does that look like on a practical level, to take your loving actions one step further & outdo your spouse in love at home? Here are some ideas—save this to remember for later 🏷️ Folding laundry → Turn underwear the right way out for easy grab & go wear(pair socks & do the same 💯) Doing the dishes → Put away all the leftovers in containers (not what it was cooked in!) & scrub the pot instead of “leaving it to soak” (guilty tho 🫠) Tidying up → Do a quick whizz around if you’re the first one home (simply straightening up the shoe rack is 🤌🏻) Getting groceries → Specific example here—ya know how at Costco you can buy items in multiples but they come packaged together, like the 3 pack of Greek yogurt tubs? Take the dang cardboard/plastic packaging off and put it in the recycling/garbage as soon as the grocery getter comes home with it 👏🏻 Showering → Bring them a warm towel when they’re almost done (or get in 🙃 — read the room for this one, o’ course !!) There are a zillion more examples, what would you add? ↓

  3. My story is about restoration through Jesus. The past can leave big holes, lots of pain, anger, resentment - I spent so much of my teen to adult years holding on to that anger and hurt and it wasn’t until I surrendered and let the Lord in, was I able to pull myself out from the darkness that consumed me. I don’t care what anyone says, it was through Christ that I had the strength to be released from my addictions. I started living in the flesh at a very young age, 3 different high schools, and in my grade 12 year I took drugs in the dorm rooms and it unlocked memories from my childhood I had completely forgotten. The abuse I endured from ages 4 -12 by a family member were now at the forefront of my mind. This only brought me into further destruction because I had no clue how to navigate trauma, so I ran away from myself. I numbed myself. I had my son just before my 21st birthday, thought my marriage, and son would heal me.  It was just a Band-Aid over a bullet wound of hurt. I was angry at God, hated everything that had to do with the church, had to blame someone, and why did this so-called God let this happen? My marriage fell apart, the darkest years of my life ensued - almost losing custody of my son, arrested to the psych ward, that I had an encounter with the enemy himself - and in that very moment, all I knew to do was to cry out and lean into the one place I knew to run, and that was Jesus. In that very moment, I remember hearing my mother’s prayers coming through the light in my room.  A friend I hadn’t spoken to in months had randomly text my mother saying the enemy wanted me and she needed to pray.  My mother was at the church praying for me; I was 20 minutes away and could legitimately hear her prayers. The doubt that I ever had that God was real were gone. In that moment I gave my life over to Jesus. I’d be lying to you if it was like a switch went off and everything was suddenly easy, but He gave me the strength to forgive, to heal, to become a witness to His miracle. Seek and You shall find.
