  3. To the little girl who at 8 years old didn’t want to live anymore after constant bullying from teachers at her school. The girl whose grade 4 teacher told her she’d end up in jail. The girl who nearly dropped out of high school for thinking she was “too stupid” to graduate. Who was suspended over and over again from elementary & high school for acting out. Who applied to ten universities because she thought she wouldn’t get accepted anywhere. Who was bullied by her classmates and peers for being “annoying,” “weird,” and “stupid.” To the girl who, up until the age of 17, had truly given up on any hope of a future - we did it. In spite of literally every barrier, somehow, someway, we did it. In the middle of all this excitement, my mind keeps circling back to one person: my grade 10 history teacher, Mr. Witmer - the first teacher to tell me that me I was capable of great things. I remember having received a 50% on a test in his class at the beginning of the semester. After handing the tests back, Mr. Witmer asked me to step into the hallway. I walked into the hallway, prepared to get in trouble for something I’m sure I did. Instead, he held up the test, looked me in the eyes and firmly said, “I know you’re capable of more. You can do better than this.” I will remember those words forever. Mr. Witmer was the first teacher who looked past the disruptive behaviour and lack of effort and saw what was actually there. A kid who was told for so long that she was a failure that she eventually believed it. A kid who was overwhelmed. A kid with serious learning & developmental disabilities who was unsupported. Sometimes the difference between a disabled kid who gives up and a disabled kid who gets into Harvard is an educator who sees them and refuses to let them give up. I was accepted to Harvard - not because I overcame my disabilities. Not because I suddenly became easier to teach. But because someone finally gave me the tools, the belief, and the accommodations to succeed.

  2. I don’t love to give people one-size-fits all advice on dog ownership because everyone is different but this is just SO important. The dog you own can be with you for over a decade. You’ll still own the dog when life gets busy, when you’ve had a long day at work, when you’ve got a lot of social events on your plate, when you have kids if you decide to, they don’t magically go away during the hard moments. So when you’re choosing to bring home a dog, don’t think about the life you want to live, but the life you currently live or realistically will be living in the future. Are you able and willing to manage that dog during the hard points in life? I love herding breeds. I love the tenacity, the eagerness to train, the look, the temperament, but I know my lifestyle isn’t suited for it. Could I probably own one and make it work? Yeah probably. Would it drive me up the wall when it won’t stop herding or barking at me when I get home if we didn’t go for an appropriately fulfilling activity, absolutely. So that’s my Thursday two cents. What kind of dog do you wish you could add to the family but know you shouldn’t???

  3. Heading into 2024 with some pretty big news… The Alfresco Science Machine and I have travelled a long way since I first started this project in 2017. From the west coast to the east coast of Canada, through rainforest, boreal forest, and Carolinian swamp forest. From the ocean, to the mountains, and across the prairies. And now in January 2024 you will find this work in National Geographic Magazine. To say I’m thrilled would be the understatement of the year. It’s such an honour to have my work published among so many incredibly talented photographers, to find myself in the company of those who dedicate their careers to sharing the incredible wonders of the natural world with readers around the globe, and the importance of doing everything we can to take care of all the living things that we share this planet with.   1. I watched episode 10 from season 3 of @rezdogsfx last night and it had me in my feels when @lilygladstone was talking about community work and why it’s important to Indigenous people. When I first moved away from home I felt pretty alone. But this episode helped me reflected on all the community I created around my family and me. With family from Akwesasne and Six, language, beadwork, hide tanning, sports, and other Indigenous mothers. This is what really drives me to do workshops in all forms, helping people of all ages build those connections so they can feel that support and the community feeling too. Upcoming dates: Just letting you know I will be in Akwesasne Nov 3 and 4th with @akwesasnezero2six , head over to their flyer to sign up and work on hides with your babies! Over Christmas break I’m doing a 2 day children’s hide workshop in Six Nations, jotform in my bio to sign up! I’m only picking 5(ish) but I will hold all registration to pick from when I do more kids workshops! Hide camps in Akwe (Nov) and Six Nations (Dec) are almost all set! I’ve been busy with a lot of prep for hide demos and workshops. Busy beading orders in between hide work.
