  1. I first shared our journey with Wilby last year. I came on stories after his developmental check (saved to highlights). I was upset. I mentioned the possibility of him being autistic and my inbox began with the questions asking why I was upset when autism is a gift. This is my page, one I’ve always tried to be brutally honest on but for a few years now, because of other people, I’ve lost my way a little - but I’m going to be braver, because I need to, other people need me to. Earlier this month we received Wilby’s diagnosis. The psychiatrist began the meeting with “I don’t think this will come as a surprise to you….” It did. Weirdly. Even though I knew it was coming…I wanted it. I needed it because I’ve never, ever had a child like Wilby. I’ve never had a toddler who I’ve been told by a health visitor he is ‘red flagging in all areas’ and when I pointed out his strengths I was met with “That’s not what we’re looking at”. I’ve never had a toddler that I can’t take to a supermarket or shop, who I can’t bribe with a bag of haribo or an iPad to behave in public. I’ve never had any of our children attack Josh & I to the point we genuinely get hurt most days. We get bruised, scratched, bitten, I have chunks of hair missing & he draws blood because he’s so quick and strong, and if we put him down he hurts himself so badly by smashing his head off any surface and clawing his skin until he bleeds. I’ve never felt like my heart is breaking because I genuinely don’t know how to console him or make things better…. …but I’ve also never had a toddler who has taught me how beautiful life is, how you can get such pleasure from something as simple as a palm tree. I’ve never known a toddler catch a ball from a distance without any eye contact, stack blocks and cushions with such precision they won’t tumble over or line sweets in a perfect straight line I couldn’t do better using a ruler to help me…. So as you can see, we have a beautiful baby boy who is autistic, and as his assessment team have stated ‘Wilby will be impacted by this condition and it affects how he will see and respond to the world’… ..but what a world Wilby lives in 🌴♥️

  1. Feeling a bit broken & sad. There are no words to describe the state of our poor NHS at the moment. Just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. Yesterday I worked all day under extreme pressure with no break & left 3.5hrs late. By the time I commuted home, finally ate, bathed & got ready for today’s shift, I went to bed at 1:30am, laying there worrying I’d forgotten to document something amongst the day’s chaos. I eventually slept for a few hours before getting up to do it all again today. Again, today was busy & I left late with no break. The exhaustion & stress triggered my cardiac arrhythmia & I spent the shift with a tens machine on my painful back. Several partners were very rude to me, making me feel worse than I already did. I’m genuinely sorry there are delays but what can I do when I’m the only midwife in the whole of DAU? For all 4 of my shifts this week I’ve been the only midwife & I know that on some of my days off other midwives have also been the only midwife there. Yesterday I had to tell a couple I'm sorry but I can't find your baby's heartbeat. Understandably, they were hysterical. How could I support them properly when I was the only midwife & all my beds were full & I had a waiting room full of women & many more on the way? How do the government think this is ok?? Postnatal depression & suicide rates have increased, as have midwife mental health problems & suicide rates. What a coincidence - I wonder if that’s anything to do with birthing/working conditions?! 96% of student midwives have mental health problems & for every 30 midwives that qualify, 29 leave. The problems I describe aren’t limited to my Trust or even maternity, there’s a national NHS crisis. Everyone, from porters to consultants, is crumbling under the immense pressure & it’s soul destroying having to work through it. I decided age 14 I wanted to be a midwife & have dedicated my life to the profession, even undertaking a Masters & PhD. 13 years later I’m 27 & a midwife who is afraid to have a baby in this unsustainable system. Will the NHS even exist in a few years? 💔
