Come get ready for death with me 💁🏻‍♀️ 💀 ✅Last Rites: an elongated prayer said by a Catholic Priest, speaking in the person of the one who is dying, asking for forgiveness of sin, the mercy of God, and the intercession of the saints. ✅ Confession: if you are able, make a good confession to rid yourself of any mortal sin and be sure to be in God’s good graces before death. If you are unconscious, the priest will absolve you in good faith. ✅ Viaticum: it literally means “provisions for your journey” and that’s exactly what it is! It is the Eucharist, it is JESUS, the Bread of Life, given a final time before you die. Even if one cannot swallow, a tiny fragment of the Host is sufficient upon their tongue or on their lips. This certainly is the best provision for your journey into eternity! ✅ Apostolic Pardon: A blessing that gives the person dying who is in a state of grace, total remission of temporal punishment due to his sins (no purgatory!). The person dying must have prayed regularly in some way during their lifetime in order to gain this incredible indulgence. Side note - because only God knows our ultimate fate in eternity, we should always pray for the dead even if they receive this pardon! ✅ 30 Gregorian Masses: this is the most underutilized and one of the most important AFTER death. Gregorian Masses are a series of Holy Masses traditionally offered on 30 consecutive days as soon as possible after a person’s death. History of this practice comes from St. Gregory the Great. He had Masses on 30 consecutive days offered for the repose of the soul of a monk who had died in Rome. At the end of the 30th Mass, the deceased appeared to one of his fellow monks and announced that he had been delivered from the flames of Purgatory. And do not forget to prepare EVERY DAY by constantly giving your life to Jesus, offering up sufferings, praying well (daily rosary), devoting yourself to the brown Scapular, frequent confession and reception of the Eucharist - LOVING ONE ANOTHER! Historically, the Church has used fashion as a way to set the priesthood apart from the laity and reflect the splendor of the kingdom of heaven here on Earth - a mechanism for drawing us in and pointing us to God. Note - Bishops and cardinals are not *actually* under a vow of poverty after they’re ordained to the level of bishop. But the way they lived their life up until that point certainly plays a role in how they choose to live after, and that’s what this reel is about! Even given the choice, this is what Francis picked. This is important to understand because we shouldn’t necessarily hold the next pope to the exact same standard of personal style. I keep thinking I’ll look outside and see you laughing on the swings. Or you’ll slowly open my door and walk up to my bed and that I’ll hear your sweet voice saying, “Mama?” Oh, the pain is indescribable. And yet, you have shown us in multiple ways that you are with us. It’s not the same joy as holding your hand or hearing your voice, but there is an unexplainable joy that only comes with knowing you are with Jesus. That you are in our true home. And that you are very, very happy. I can picture your smile that would light up the room. I can hear you laughing and screaming as you run with your arms out. I can see you dancing and spinning in circles. I know you are running into the arms of every Saint you meet with that big grin and saying, “Hi, I’m Micah.” It’s easy to picture these things because this is what you did when you were alive on earth. Please continue to visit me and help mama keep going. You were always such a good helper and eager to make me smile. And I will keep asking for your help. My boy. I am so proud of you. Yesterday was the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. I was reminded of how much you loved singing the Ave Maria after our prayers and how you said “Mama Mary is the goodest girl in the whole entire world.” Well, now you’re in Heaven with her.   3. It’s been one week since we had to leave the hospital. One week since it was decided that you would never step foot into our house again. Leaving you alone in that room and walking away was the most gut-wrenching thing I’ve ever had to do. Every motherly bone in my body ached at how wrong it felt. It’s also been one week of witnessing your little miracles. One week of seeing signs of you and feeling your little “hellos”. I never expected how the pain and the consolation would go hand in hand. How each breath in my lungs would burn with the fact that we have to live on without you. And how each smile in my memory would give me visions of your smiles in Heaven. I think back on the prayers I said while in the hospital, over and over again: Please, God. I’m begging you. Let me take his place. I’ll do anything. God, why are you doing this? Lord, if it be Your will, let this cup pass from me. Oh Jesus, I surrender myself to You. Take care of everything. Let all this be for Your glory. God, You are so good. In the midst of my sorrow and grief, we experienced a lot of peace. I felt so loved, protected, held up by the Body of Christ. And it began to make sense when Micah became a light for others. Through him, the Lord has been giving purpose to our pain, and revealing His presence, His mercy, and His promise of eternal life. I’ve never desired Heaven more than I do now. Jesus, you gave us the most beautiful and precious gift of salvation. You gave us Your body, You laid down Your life on that cross. And you have asked me to give my most beautiful and precious gift of my child. To give up his little body and lay his life down at Your feet. And because of Your promises, because You are so good, I surrender. “But we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

  1. It’s all in the seasoning 🤎And it’s been in my experience that most of the reasons why people dislike cast iron usually boil down to one thing: imperfect or damaged seasoning. Here’s how to ensure a good seasoning on your irons: 1. Be sure they’re clean of food debris. Wipe out your iron well. 2. Lightly coat your iron with a high heat oil like avocado oil or tallow. Olive oil smokes at a low point and if you try to bake on a layer of olive oil seasoning then your irons will smoke every time you use them. Lightly coat the iron, using a paper towel to wipe the oil over the surfaces. There should be a light sheen to them when you’re done. 3. Bake them in the oven at 350 F (or 375) for an hour, being sure to place your irons upside down in the oven with a cookie sheet underneath to catch the oil drips. 4. After an hour, turn off the oven and let the irons cool fully inside the oven. 5. Repeat 4 more times (or as desired). Happy cooking, sweet friends! 😊

But what I didn’t expect was the sense of detachment from the dress that came from wearing it every single day. If the dress was my daily wear, then it was going to get dirty, stained, or perhaps even torn. And I had to be okay with that. No longer were dresses only things I wore on “special occasions” and then put back after only wearing for an hour or two. Now I wore them constantly. When at the grocery store, while cleaning toilets, digging in the garden, or riding horses. And I had to accept that they would get soiled: covered in food perhaps, or horse hair, or bodily fluids from precious babies. The thing about wearing dresses daily, is that eventually it becomes second nature. It is a beautiful and feminine garment, to be sure, but it is also just a piece of sewn cloth. When I first began, my heart rejoiced in this expression of my femininity: how glorious to silently be able to declare the gift of womanhood that God gave me! But I also found that while I loved this silent proclamation, I also discovered a sort of quiet liberation from the world, a little of that most elusive of virtues: detachment. We are in the world, but not of it, dear friends. How extraordinary that the Lord used the dress to teach me that. — I’ve been exclusive dress wearing for a while now, and it’s been a long process of finding what works for me and what doesn’t, how much I’m willing to spend and what I’m not. Sometimes I’ll have people message me “I’d love to wear dresses daily but I don’t want to fall into vanity.” And I’m here to tell you that it only will if you let it. So wear the dress, sweet friends, and let the Lord transform your heart. 🤎

The story of how I turned an old hall tree into our beautiful home altar 🤎 I bought one heavily discounted at an antique fair, brought it home, removed and saved the mirror for later, and placed our crucifix at its center. At first I tried our Victorian blessed crucifix but it didn’t look right and I knew it was time to place it somewhere else in our home. Then I tried a million ways to affix Our Lady and St Joseph on brackets on the wall to the left and right of Our Lord, but nothing worked. I also knew that whatever went here had to hide the thermostat but still allow us to reach it as necessary. So I settled on my favorite little milk glass vases with seasonal blooms. I then began to festoon it with more blooms. In this season leading up to Hallowtide, it seemed appropriate to use blooms and foliage reminiscent of the transience of life and the certainty of death, a little Memento Mori of flowers. I then added a vintage little embroidered dresser scarf, placing Our Lady and St Joseph here along with a miniature crucifix, and a well worn scapular. Our rosaries hang on the hooks to the left and right. A holy water font nearby. And all our miscellaneous sacred objects, blessed candles, etc in the drawer below. What a joy it’s been creating this little space slowly over the past month. 😊 It’s not perfect by any means, but I know Our Lord sees my efforts, my little prayers during it all, and treasures them, imperfect though they may be 🤎

Since I “paint” all of my art digitally using an ipad and Apple Pencil, I’m always sooo nervous and excited to see it in print, but I couldn’t be happier with how the resolution and color came out! For this, we printed on a 30X40” stretched canvas and embellished it with metallic gold paint to give it a more authentic appeal. It now hangs in the narthex at the church, where I hope it will inspire devotion and prayer. Blessed Solemnity of All Saints!⁣ ⁣ A patron saint is a departed brother or sister in Christ, affirmed by the process of canonization to be enjoying eternity in heaven, who intercedes for us in a special way. Maybe they experienced the same kind of cross that you’re carrying; maybe you were born on their feast day, or maybe you share a a name. ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes it seems like a certain saint keeps popping up everywhere- conversations, images, books, etc. When this happens some people say the saint is choosing them as a patron! So pay attention and ask God what He could be trying to reveal to you through your heavenly patron’s friendship. ⁣ ⁣ During our six years of infertility I beseeched St. Gerard, the patron of expectant mothers, every day. So when my son was born on his feast day, (six minutes before the end of the day!) I didn’t see that as a coincidence but as an affirmation that St. Gerard had interceded all those years on my behalf. ⁣ ⁣ More recently, I prayed that for a relic of St. Gerard to find its way to me and the very next day my friend called and offered me a first-class relic to pray with. ❌ No. We don’t. Worship is for God alone. But we do honor Mary — profoundly — because God honored her first. 🪽 Luke 1:28 tells us the angel greets her as “full of grace.” Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, calls her “blessed among women” (Luke 1:42). And Mary herself proclaims, “All generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). We simply obey that. 💕 At the cross, Jesus gives Mary to John — and to all of us. “Behold your mother” (John 19:27). He could have said anything in His final moments — and He gave us her. ✨ In Revelation 12, we see “a woman clothed with the sun… and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (Rev. 12:1). This is Mary — mother of the male child who will rule all nations (Rev. 12:5). She is seen reigning in heaven — not as a goddess, but as a mother. 👸 In ancient Israel, the queen was not the king’s wife, but his mother. She held the title Gebirah, or “Great Lady.” Solomon placed a throne for his mother at his right hand (1 Kings 2:19). In the kingdom of Christ — the Son of David — Mary is His queen mother. ⚜️ We honor her not instead of Christ, but because of Him. Mary always points to her Son and says what she said at Cana: “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5). ❤️‍🔥 And if you still don’t believe this, go and take a look at Martin Luther’s Sermon on Christmas in 1531, where he explicitly states that “We can never honor her [Mary] enough.   1. Five years ago today, at age 43, I became a mother. A black-haired, amber-eyed boy was placed in my arms, and my whole world changed.⁣ ⁣ People often ask if this was hard, becoming a mom so late. But it wasn’t. It was wonderful. That’s not to say there aren’t challenging aspects. There are. I wish my parents were younger. I wish they could enjoy these babies more. I wish I had the energy of my 28-year-old self. Or even my 38-year-old self. More time for more babies would have been nice, too.⁣ ⁣ But for every challenging part of being an older mom, there are a thousand glorious parts.⁣ ⁣ No matter my age, there are still heads resting on my shoulder, cheeks pressed against mine, and bodies lying heavy on me in the night.⁣ ⁣ There are still peals of laughter and choruses of song. There are books being read and stories being told. There is whining and crying that grate the nerves, but also the sweetest little conversations between the sweetest little people who don’t realize you’re listening.⁣ ⁣ There are still personalities developing and temperaments emerging. There is growing and becoming, discovering and wondering, apologizing and forgiving.⁣ ⁣ Most of all, there are moments like this, during a visit to Illinois, where heaven comes to earth and no fancy editing or soundtrack can improve one bit upon the whirling, twirling beauty of it all.⁣ ⁣ Energy would be nice. Family help would be lovely. But I wouldn’t trade all the energy and help in the world for one second with this man and these babies. Every one of them was worth the wait. And I believe every one of them is why God had me wait. He saw this dance before He laid the foundations of the world, and only His timing could get us here—not mine, not my mother’s, and especially not the judgy lady on the Internet’s.⁣ ⁣ If motherhood has come for you early, praise God. But if you’re still waiting for that gift, praise Him still. No matter how it may seem, His plan will be better than yours. And if motherhood is part of that plan, your age won’t diminish the joy you find in your children. It’s not babies arriving on schedule that make motherhood grand. It’s just the babies, whenever and however they come.

I think about it all the time.”⁣ ⁣ I wrote those words two years ago, in my book “Letters to Myself from the End of the World.” At that point, my dad had been cheating death for the better part of five years. He’d cheated it so many times, part of me thought he would outlive us all. ⁣ ⁣ But late last night, on the Feast of St. Augustine, my good, kind father, Gary Martin Stimpson, went to our Heavenly Father. ⁣ ⁣ Please remember him in your prayers. And my mother and sisters, too. We are Rock Island bound again, after less than three days at home. So, maybe add a prayer for my poor babies, who have yet another 10 hour car ride ahead of them.
