  1. If you know, you know. 😅 (laughing emoji) In all seriousness, this has happened to me several times. Many hearing people don’t realize that it’s interpreters’ job to facilitate effective communication and interpret everything that is spoken/heard. When interpreters are interpreting a conversation, they are focused on interpreting; they are not there as a third-party to the conversation. Qualified interpreters will interpret everything that is said, regardless of who the message is directed to. All of my preferred, qualified interpreters will even sign, “Tell HER….” if the hearing person uses this language, which allows me to make a decision whether to gently inform them that they can and should address me directly. I always appreciate it when interpreters remain committed to their job and refrain from making personal interjections, as this ensures the deaf consumer is not disempowered and power dynamics are not impacted for the most part. I find this to be an example of an interpreter exercising their power ethically. One of my preferred, qualified interpreters who I work with frequently is often asked, “What’s your name?” by a hearing person at the beginning of an interaction. This interpreter will always interpret what the hearing person asks, and I will usually say something along the lines of, “you can respond if you’d like.” The interpreter will then say, “This is the interpreter speaking. My name is _____.” This helps clarify the interpreter’s role and does not disempower the deaf consumer. Have a funny story involving a hearing person and interpreter? Share in the comments! . .   2. Ha, I had fun with this one. In all seriousness, when hearing people interact with deaf people by way of a sign language interpreter, they should address the deaf person directly. Interpreters are there simply to interpret, not as somebody who is taking part in a conversation. I don’t get offended when a hearing person uses this type of language, but I usually take the opportunity to let them know that they can and should address me directly and that there is no need to use third-person language. I think this helps clarify interpreters’ roles and allows me to reclaim power as a deaf person. This is often well-received by hearing people, as many are genuinely not sure how to interact with deaf people and interpreters, and are often glad to learn this. Questions? Stories?   3. Sadly, deaf people face this all the time, even though discriminating against deaf people and refusing to provide accommodations is illegal. We’ve personally run into countless situations where we were denied access to classes, despite being paying members. Not only is this illegal and incredibly frustrating, but this also contributes to the perpetuation of numerous health disparities affecting deaf people. It’s 2022 and the ADA is over 30 years old, but noncompliance continues to be rampant in every corner of deaf people’s lives. It’s high time that this changes. Here are a few tips and best-practices for gyms or businesses that provide wellness/fitness classes, both in-person and virtual: Include information about how to request accommodations in your class notices, websites, and etc. Eligible small businesses can claim tax credits on access expenditures, including the costs of ASL interpreters. Have a “Communication Access Plan” in place so you can easily fulfill your legal obligations and seamlessly provide accommodations. Organize training on accessibility, inclusion, and applicable disability laws. Engage in an interactive process; deaf people know their communication access needs best and are often more than happy to discuss options with you. For example, virtual classes hosted on a video conferencing platform like Zoom that are not as interactive (e.g. a yoga class where participants simply follow instructions), it might be satisfactory to utilize a Video Relay Service interpreter, but for a class that is more interactive and includes specialized terminology, Video Relay Service might not be appropriate or allowed per the ADA. Deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, and deafdisabled people are entitled to equal access at gyms. Transcript and reel description are pinned in the comments.
