  3. Had to bring this gem back for the first of the month reminder to do your self check. It was so amazing creating this with @thefemalesurgeon and @justmecameil who very kindly taught us how to sign for this reel. We hope we have done her and the community proud with our efforts. It’s all about inclusive messaging. 🤙🏼𝗕𝗦𝗟 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿🤙🏼 This time we are raising awareness via British sign language (BSL). We feel it’s super important to ensure that everyone is included in health matters, and this includes providing health information in all forms of communication whether in other languages, via sign language or by providing clear captions. “So we’re here to remind you, not to forget to do your self checks: Breasts/ chest Genitals - vulva and testicles Skin - all over (Don’t forget soles, hands and nail) Mouth At least once a month. Thank you. Please share.” A message from a GP, surgeon and nurse with love. The reason we encourage regular self checks is so that you know and understand your normal. That way, if anything changes, even if it’s the slightest change, you will notice it. Please get it checked out and if it does turn out to be anything sinister (which is rarely the case), the hope is that it will have been picked up early where treatment is more likely to be curative, less invasive and successful. 🙏🏾 Remember: Early detection saves lives. ♥️ Asha @justmecameil does so much to raise awareness of deafness and is an incredible advocate for the deaf community. Please help us reach and help as many people as possible with this important message by tagging or sharing with friends, family, or anyone you may know. 💛💛 #selfcheck #earlydetectionsaveslives #earlydetection

  3. 💫 Our little miracle… Thomas James Petts. Born on 16th October at 10.13am 6.4lbs. 🫶 Thomas didn’t want to wait till his planned c-section date this week! Instead he’s was 3 weeks early! It’s been a tough few days for Thomas as he has been moved to NICU. Thankfully he’s improving every day and hopefully will be back with us the whole time v soon. I’ve also been ill since surgery, but the whole team are looking after Thomas and I really well. As has the best Dad in ever. I didn’t think I could love you anymore than I already do, but seeing you with Thomas is just so special, we are very lucky. Kimmy picked up that I was starting to go into labour before anyone else did which completely blows my mind, Clever pooch. 🐾 Thomas you’ve stolen our hearts already. We love you so much and our hearts are full. I’ve never felt love like this before 🫶 If I could bottle this feeling I’d be able to sell it for thousands. He’s certainly helping lift us over these testing times. Our world, our everything and my proudest moment 🌍 Great Western Hospital there are no words to describe how incredible the whole team has been and continues to be. Grateful for everything you’ve done to bring our miracle into the world and care for him so incredibly well whilst he’s been ill. Our NHS is full of Heroes. I’ll keep everyone posted on when Thomas gets out of NICU and we get out of hospital and home in our little bubble. Fingers crossed it’s soon! 🤞 #newborn #lovelikenoother #babyboy #ourworld #csection #postpartum #spinalcordinjury #dystonia #deaf #cochlearimplants #nhsheroes

  1. Can we talk about Lyla’s face at the end of this video? Look at the pure joy and excitement on her face. All because she and Ada shared a moment of full accessible language together 💙 I talk a lot about the lack of support for parents of deaf children, but there is another forgotten demographic: siblings. It’s great to be seeing the new BSL GCSE being put into place, it’s great to see sign language courses becoming more accessible for adults. But what about the little ones? What about the siblings of deaf children? These are the ones who will be our deaf children’s biggest cheerleaders when they grow up, yet at present there is very little available to teach them sign language. Lyla has learned everything she knows from me, her hearing mother. And she does so well. But there should be more. She is Ada’s best friend; she should have better support in learning her sister’s language. My beginner’s learning is not sufficient to carry our whole family, but so far it has had to be. I look forward to a day where hearing siblings of deaf children get better support and our deaf children can be fully included in family life. Until that time I will watch my daughters find their way and I will support them where I can. So here’s to the overlooked pieces of the puzzle. Here’s to the hearing children who are learning sign language for their deaf siblings. Here’s to both of my daughters, who are navigating and overcoming a massive communication barrier in their own early years. Our little role models 💙

  3. There’s been a lot of talk lately around why my Deaf daughter would need a sign language interpreter when she a) has a mum who can sign and b) could use pen and paper. Here’s why. This is the impact full and equal access to language has. I don’t think I need to point out how easy the communication is in this moment. Here Ada is talking about the story, having been totally mesmerised the whole way through. All of this is simply because she had the wonderful @hayleybrown_andco there making sure she had full access. Throughout the performance Ada was glancing back and forth between Hayley and the main stage, checking in when she needed to and simultaneously watching the actors. This is a skill she’ll develop over the years. Also note that she had her mum sitting next to her, cuddling her when she was a bit unsure, enjoying the moment just mum and daughter. Note that she had a qualified interpreter with a much higher standard of BSL than I do, giving her full access. Note that she didn’t have to sit writing questions to try and get full understanding of the show (she can’t do that anyway at her age but nonetheless it’s been suggested multiple times to me). Watch how she interacts directly with Hayley, who was actively clarifying things with her and repeating signs Ada missed when she was watching the actors. I also want to take a moment to thank @snowdometam who never questioned Ada’s need for this access, even though they had never been asked for it before and didn’t know how to book a BSL Interpreter. They took on my suggestions and did their best to make sure Ada had the same experience as every other child in that room. This should be the norm and I hope one day it will be. And shout out to @hayleybrown_andco who I messaged when we were really struggling to find an interpreter at such a busy time of year and immediately said she’d be there. She did an amazing job with Ada. This is the access Ada deserves, has a right to, and I’ll fight for it in every setting. I’ll settle for nothing less because she is a child with wants and needs like any other. She deserves a childhood like any other.
