  1. All of our lives…we’ve been asked to practice our speech, to fix how we pronounce certain words, and if we have an ‘accent’. There are Deaf people who loathe speaking, that’s ok. There are Deaf people who are comfortable with speaking, that’s also ok. Some are not very good at it. Some are good. Here’s a video of my Deaf family speaking different words - a living proof that we’re all different in how we ‘speak’. We can laugh at ourselves and make jokes out of it BECAUSE we’re in a safe space. We’re comfortable with each other. It’s a fun game, but the real world can be cruel. For any hearing person to make fun of a Deaf person’s ‘speaking’ abilities or pressure them to ‘speak,’ that’s never ever okay. As for us, we’re happy with signing! 🤭🤣❤️🤟

When using the drive thru, Deaf people should equally have an easy experience as everyone else… in our case, they asked us to pull over (not a first and won’t be the last) and wait much longer for our food. For others, some drive thrus have simply refused to accept a Deaf person’s order. Fast food restaurants need to realize that we all have a life, children to take care of, are not in the mood to step out of our car into the freezing or hot weather, and just simply want to get our food the fast way. When will fast food be fast for Deaf people? 🍔🍟

  3. I’ve recorded this a while ago but never got around to posting it. Some may feel offended, just keep in mind, you don’t ever see Deaf people coming up to random hearing people for us to test or practice our “speech” skills on them. 

Why do the same to us? It’s intrusive and weird, there are better time and places for that. Don’t go up to strangers, please. I cannot explain to you how many times this has happened to so many of us. Of course we do appreciate your enthusiasm and the fact that you’re learning ASL though, don’t get me wrong. Like I’ve said earlier, there are better time and places for it! Not at a random place in the mall, not while we are at a restaurant trying to eat and catch up with friends/family, not when we are shopping for clothes, etc.

  1. If you know, you know. 😅 (laughing emoji) In all seriousness, this has happened to me several times. Many hearing people don’t realize that it’s interpreters’ job to facilitate effective communication and interpret everything that is spoken/heard. When interpreters are interpreting a conversation, they are focused on interpreting; they are not there as a third-party to the conversation. Qualified interpreters will interpret everything that is said, regardless of who the message is directed to. All of my preferred, qualified interpreters will even sign, “Tell HER….” if the hearing person uses this language, which allows me to make a decision whether to gently inform them that they can and should address me directly. I always appreciate it when interpreters remain committed to their job and refrain from making personal interjections, as this ensures the deaf consumer is not disempowered and power dynamics are not impacted for the most part. I find this to be an example of an interpreter exercising their power ethically. One of my preferred, qualified interpreters who I work with frequently is often asked, “What’s your name?” by a hearing person at the beginning of an interaction. This interpreter will always interpret what the hearing person asks, and I will usually say something along the lines of, “you can respond if you’d like.” The interpreter will then say, “This is the interpreter speaking. My name is _____.” This helps clarify the interpreter’s role and does not disempower the deaf consumer. Have a funny story involving a hearing person and interpreter? Share in the comments! . .   2. Ha, I had fun with this one. In all seriousness, when hearing people interact with deaf people by way of a sign language interpreter, they should address the deaf person directly. Interpreters are there simply to interpret, not as somebody who is taking part in a conversation. I don’t get offended when a hearing person uses this type of language, but I usually take the opportunity to let them know that they can and should address me directly and that there is no need to use third-person language. I think this helps clarify interpreters’ roles and allows me to reclaim power as a deaf person. This is often well-received by hearing people, as many are genuinely not sure how to interact with deaf people and interpreters, and are often glad to learn this. Questions? Stories?   3. Sadly, deaf people face this all the time, even though discriminating against deaf people and refusing to provide accommodations is illegal. We’ve personally run into countless situations where we were denied access to classes, despite being paying members. Not only is this illegal and incredibly frustrating, but this also contributes to the perpetuation of numerous health disparities affecting deaf people. It’s 2022 and the ADA is over 30 years old, but noncompliance continues to be rampant in every corner of deaf people’s lives. It’s high time that this changes. Here are a few tips and best-practices for gyms or businesses that provide wellness/fitness classes, both in-person and virtual: Include information about how to request accommodations in your class notices, websites, and etc. Eligible small businesses can claim tax credits on access expenditures, including the costs of ASL interpreters. Have a “Communication Access Plan” in place so you can easily fulfill your legal obligations and seamlessly provide accommodations. Organize training on accessibility, inclusion, and applicable disability laws. Engage in an interactive process; deaf people know their communication access needs best and are often more than happy to discuss options with you. For example, virtual classes hosted on a video conferencing platform like Zoom that are not as interactive (e.g. a yoga class where participants simply follow instructions), it might be satisfactory to utilize a Video Relay Service interpreter, but for a class that is more interactive and includes specialized terminology, Video Relay Service might not be appropriate or allowed per the ADA. Deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, and deafdisabled people are entitled to equal access at gyms. Transcript and reel description are pinned in the comments. When I meet people who come up to us and do sign language, I never forget them. Why? Because it’s so incredibly rare to be approached by someone who knows sign language in public.   1. After returning home, I didn't explore out much, even when I visited New York & Washington DC for a bit. I had travel burn out, and I forced my ass to get out of the house while visiting NYC to see The Vessel, a new attraction. After leaving the east coast, I felt a bit guilty for not trying to get out of the house. But wait, how can one get tired of traveling? Trust me, I once thought that traveling is something to be exciting about but travel burnout is a real thing - most particularly if you are traveling for a while or experiencing a lot of stress. I later learned (and still am) to not be too ashamed about it. It is okay when you need time to rest. You are allowed to have the time to recover. 🙌🏼 Ignore my weird ass face - can’t pose for shit.

Just like the non-disabled travel community, the majority of travelers are men, 👉🏼 Deaf or Hard of Hearing white men, especially in the media👈🏼 (and then white Deaf women which is a whole other story for another time). ♀️Deaf women are largely underrepresented in the Deaf travel community. Why does this matter? 👏🏼 REPRESENTATION 👏🏼 Increasing the visibility of Deaf female travelers means young Deaf girls and Deaf women realize that they are capable to take care of themselves, be independent, and are capable to travel. Deaf girls and women were taught so many "can't" just because they can't hear and internalized that belief. Seeing empowered Deaf women, especially those that mirror them, can make them feel empowered. Like what Michelle Obama said: "There Is No Limit To What We As Women Can Accomplish" 👏🏼 AWARENESS 👏🏼 Another reason is awareness. It can dismantle hearing people's misconceptions about Deaf women and even the general Deaf communities. While it probably wouldn't dismantle every single misconception, it still can create a ripple of changes!   3. An update on my mental health: I still have depression, anxiety and PTSD. It's chronic, and it's something that would never go away. At some times, it hit hard. It's especially harder when living in triggered environment. At some other times, I feel better. Wondering why I'm talking about this? It is because it's my truth. It matters. Mental health should be taken care of, just like physical health. I've been seeking therapy, taking medication, facing the traumas that slowly makes me feel that I'm in better control of my own life. It's not perfect, but what important is that I still keep on trying. I don't want to live a bitter life and die with so many regrets. As I'm currently traveling, I now know for sure that I am not using travel to run away. A year and a half ago, it was probably slightly so. But this time, I am not. So, the reality now is that I am unable to have therapeutic sessions while traveling abroad due to laws & ethics, obviously. But I do have medication with me, and I do facetime with my loved ones to makes me feel...complete because traveling isn't the only thing that makes me feel complete.
