  1. After 16 years reviewing restaurants and writing for The West Australian, it’s time to put the knife and fork down, pursue other ambitions and stretch my writing muscles in new and exciting ways. Sixteen years is a long stretch for any columnist and, while writing weekly columns is, for me, the apogee of a 40-year career in journalism, it becomes increasingly challenging to stay fresh and relevant. With that in mind, it’s always a good idea to leave at the top of one’s game. I am not leaving the dinner table completely. I will continue to write about food and dining and reinvigorate my writing in new, interesting ways across a range of platforms. Yes, I’ll still be in the thick of it, reviewing and writing about dining, food trends, cocktails, wine and hospitality tourism. I might even write a tell all memoir! God knows, there’s a million interesting and salacious stories I haven’t told yet. Stay tuned for future announcements. I have been fortunate to have a career spanning television, radio, and, my favourite media, newspaper and magazines. I have travelled the world on all manner of assignments from the conflicts of the middle east to the heart-warming and selfless work of an orangutan sanctuary deep in the tropical forests of Borneo. My talk radio career at the ABC, 3AW Melbourne and 6PR Perth was a particular highlight. In the last 16 years though, my focus has been on restaurant criticism, which has taken me far and wide, from the wet markets of Dubai to the rice fields of Valencia, Spain and from the glorious Kimberley to some of the most celebrated restaurants on the planet. Most importantly though has been the privilege to provide weekly consumer advice, humour and perhaps even a little foodie education, by way of my restaurant reviews. You can contact me via Instagram at @broadbrush or on email at robertbroadfield@me.com. Anything that requires a physical address, send to: Rob Broadfield Broadcomm Pty Ltd PO Box 167 Cottesloe WA 6911 . Cheers. Thanks. Love youse all.

  1. GRAPHIC CONTENT AND OVER-SHARING WARNING (and I'm not just talking about my head). All smiles after my 6.5-week post-op check-up and given the all-clear to do most things again 😊. In about December I started feeling a bit bloated, but put it down to overindulgence over Christmas. But the bloat kept coming back. Finally went to a doctor in April. I told her I was pretty sure it was a fibroid. She told me she was pretty sure I was pregnant 😳🤦🏾‍♀️. I had to get an ultrasound, which confirmed I was right and she was wrong. 🎉 (fair to say I never went back to her). I was then referred to a specialist, who made me get an MRI (second pic). You can see how big this thing was growing in my abdomen. My uterus was apparently 5-6 months "pregnant". My surgeon and all her staff were pretty impressed with its size. In June, I had a vertical open myomectomy, which is a caesarean, but removing tumours instead of babies. My surgeon cut out the big fibroid, measuring 14cm x 12cm x 9cm and weighing 1.2kg, plus a surprise piggybacking little one (you can see them in the third and fourth pics. Fifth pic is my uterus going back into my body 😬🤮) Thankfully they're benign 😍. (Last pic is me about an hour after coming out of surgery, woozy, drugged) I have a giant scar from my bellybutton down, which I'm fine with. I am so grateful for my health, family and friends. ESPECIALLY my amazing family who cooked and cleaned for me in those first two weeks of recovery when even just showering meant I needed a recovery nap 💖. And all those friends, who knew about this, who constantly checked in on me. About 80% of women have fibroids, but only about 25% have symptoms. Get yourself checked out if you're not feeling yourself. If you have read this far, thanks for listening to my TED talk. 😊 #fibroids #openmyomectomy #myomectomy #surgery #fibroidawareness #perth
