After 16 years reviewing restaurants and writing for The West Australian, it’s time to put the knife and fork down, pursue other ambitions and stretch my writing muscles in new and exciting ways. Sixteen years is a long stretch for any columnist and, while writing weekly columns is, for me, the apogee of a 40-year career in journalism, it becomes increasingly challenging to stay fresh and relevant. With that in mind, it’s always a good idea to leave at the top of one’s game. I am not leaving the dinner table completely. I will continue to write about food and dining and reinvigorate my writing in new, interesting ways across a range of platforms. Yes, I’ll still be in the thick of it, reviewing and writing about dining, food trends, cocktails, wine and hospitality tourism. I might even write a tell all memoir! God knows, there’s a million interesting and salacious stories I haven’t told yet. Stay tuned for future announcements. I have been fortunate to have a career spanning television, radio, and, my favourite media, newspaper and magazines. I have travelled the world on all manner of assignments from the conflicts of the middle east to the heart-warming and selfless work of an orangutan sanctuary deep in the tropical forests of Borneo. My talk radio career at the ABC, 3AW Melbourne and 6PR Perth was a particular highlight. In the last 16 years though, my focus has been on restaurant criticism, which has taken me far and wide, from the wet markets of Dubai to the rice fields of Valencia, Spain and from the glorious Kimberley to some of the most celebrated restaurants on the planet. Most importantly though has been the privilege to provide weekly consumer advice, humour and perhaps even a little foodie education, by way of my restaurant reviews.   2. Wednesday Feb 15, 1600 hrs WST. The dynamic duo, Dan Morris and Emma Ferguson have opened the doors to their latest venture, Vin Populi in High Street, Fremantle. As one expects from Ferguson, the wine list is epic and mostly Italian and in homage to their predecessor on this storied site, the Roma restaurant, they have reinstated and reinvented it's most popular dish, roast chicken and spaghetti. Charcuterie is next level and the interior design just makes you go "aaaah, feed me, give me great booze and take your time." The building is owned by the other dynamic duo, restaurant impresarios Nic Trimboli and Adrian Fini who have been long time backers and partners of Morris and Ferguson. Congrats guys.   3. The Jetty has gone live! Restaurateur and pub owner Miles Hull’s brilliant new venue on the river at East Freo opened its doors this afternoon and it’s off to a flying start. Chef Marcello Segalina (ex Bistro Guillaume) has a sound menu of simple snacks and substantial dishes. His yiros is an orange-scented kebab and nothing like the 3am kebab you pound in Northbridge after a big night. Good cocktails, a beautiful, simple room and despite the cold and rain, it’s a blast of Summer fresh air in East Fremantle. I think I know where I’ll be spending my summer afternoons from now on.   3. I lost 17kg by 10 months postpartum, and I’m not going to pretend it was effortless. It took discipline. But not the toxic, all or nothing kind you see online. The kind that looked like: - Training 4x per week, even on broken sleep - Following a progressive overload plan (not just “working out”) - Moving through phases of deficits, maintenance, and building phases - Meal prepping every week to remove decision fatigue - Tracking my food. Not perfectly, but consistently All while navigating: – Poor recovery – Limited time – A completely new routine as a mum Some days I felt exhausted. Some sessions weren’t my best. Some weeks weren’t perfect. But I didn’t rely on motivation. I relied on structure. That’s the difference. Because postpartum fat loss isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things, consistently, over time. No shortcuts. No “bounce back” pressure. Just a plan, and the discipline to stick to it (even when it’s not convenient).   3. GRANDPA NINO [Incredible Focaccia Sandwiches 🥪✨] Grandpa Nino, formerly known as Mortadeli, has been one of our staples for the past couple years or so, and for good reason! Specialising in loaded Italian sandwiches, Grandpa Nino hosts a massive queue during lunchtime which is a testament to its sheer goodness ✨. 🍴🍴🍴 🍞 Mortadeli $18 - mortadella, straciatella, pistachio cream, pomodorini, rocket 🥩 Padrino $26 - steak tartar, patate fritti, parmiggiano reggiano 🍤 Mare Monti $20 - crispy prawns, lardo, iceberg lettuce, tartar sauce, pomodorini 🎣 Bacala Mantecato $18 - salted cod & potatoes, crispy onions, sicilian olives, capers, anchovies You won’t go wrong with any of the options on their chalkboard, but after visiting multiple times, we’ve narrowed down our favourites from their menu - the classic Mortadeli, and their (semi-recent) new addition, the Padrino. The Mortadeli features the most beautiful pistachio cream paired with straciatella - a match made in heaven with the thinly sliced but abundently layered mortadella. The Padrino is a steak tartar lover’s dream - fresh and creamy steak tartar paired with freshly fried and delicate potato crisps. Definitely a bang for your buck tartar dish compared to ordering it at a typical wine bar. All fillings are made fresh in-house, along with deli cuts that they slice themselves. The focaccia that houses these delicious fillings is made fresh and lightly toasted upon order, and feels balanced with a fluffy interior and a crisp exterior slathered in EVOO.
