  1. When the doctors told me I was going to lose my tongue I immediately thought I would never eat again. Doctor after doctor reassured me that it didn’t mean that. And while they didn’t lie, food is not at the center of my life like it was before getting sick. My already complicated relationship with it has become even more confusing. I smell food and I crave it. I watch mukbangs and drool over other people’s ability to crunch and bite and chew. I cook for my husband on an almost daily basis and love being in the kitchen. But when it comes to feeding myself it feels like more often than not I fail at it. Only recently have I found a sweet spot. Soft foods, small bites, lots of milk to pull the food from the front to the back of my mouth, lots of sauce and lots of patience. I choke. I get frustrated. I go days without trying because it’s just so difficult. But I will not give up. When I got to work today, the ensure I had left in the cafeteria fridge had been thrown away. My fault, I knew better. We can’t keep personal food in the fridges because of the health inspector. But I realized I had no “food”. I was going to have run a whole shift on an empty stomach. I decided I had no choice. I went down to the restaurant in the hotel and asked chef for 2 soft poached eggs and hollandaise, a safe food I had eaten at home in privacy. I have avoided this process in public for a multitude of reasons but was left with no choice. And guess what, it worked! I did it. I ate 2 whole eggs. I had FOOD for breakfast! OH and YES I can taste it. And YES it’s delicious. A big win in my world! 🌎 REMEMBER- you too can do hard things! 💕 #cancersurvivor #tonguecancer #dothehardthings #glossectomyrecovery #headandneckcancer #americancancersociety #atx

  3. One year ago today, I found out I had cancer. It has been by far the hardest, longest, most complicated, painful, and emotional year of my life. I spent countless hours in hospitals. I’ve been stuck by more needles than I could count. I’ve been cut open, cut up, and sewn back together. I’ve had a tracheostomy, a feeding tube, a port, a near-total glossectomy, 75 of my lymph nodes removed, and my leg muscle reconstructed into a flap in my mouth. I’ve had 7 rounds of chemotherapy. I’ve had 65 rounds of radiation to the head and neck. My mom practically lived with us. Elise and Michelle spent a lot of time in hospitals. And Donald, oh Donald, he held my hand through it all. I also, got engaged. I watched one of my best friends get married. I went to Florida. I swam in the ocean twice. I got flowers, cards and gifts from people all over the world. I went viral on TikTok. I was on people magazines website. I found my voice even after they took my tongue. I fought like hell. And here I am, 1 year later, and from what we know right now… cancer free. 😭❤️ I couldn’t have won this battle alone. The endless amount of support and love I’ve received will forever be the light in my darkest hour. I felt more seen by my peers friends and family than I ever have in life these last 365 days. Thank you from the bottom of my soul for not giving up on me and for continuing to show me the good in the world. My first scan post treatment is April 29th. And then I’ll have a scan every 3 months, for 2 years to make sure I’m still cancer free. They don’t call it remission till I’ve been clean for 5 years. I plan on making it to 5 years. And then 10. And then hopefully not till I’m in the ground will I ever have to fight this evil disease ever again. If life has other plans for me, well, we’ll cross that bridge and fight like hell. But for now… FUCK CANCER. Thanks for going on this ride with me. I’m ready to unbuckle my seatbelt and get off. 👏🏼

  2. lucky hand-pulled noodles inspired by the year of the snake 🐍🧧 eating long noodles for lunar new year is supposed to bring good fortune, prosperity and luck! the longer the noodle, the longer your life 🍜 recipe below: - 300g ap flour - 1 tsp kosher salt - 2 cups spinach - 150 ml water - veg oil - 2 tbsp sichuan chili crisp - 2 tbsp soy sauce - 1 tbsp chinese black vinegar - 1 tbsp oyster sauce - 1 tsp sugar - thinly sliced radishes, scallions + cilantro ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. in a blender, blend spinach and water. strain and set aside 2. in a large bowl, whisk flour and salt. slowly add the spinach water in batches, combining by hand or stand mixer 3. once combined, continue kneading by hand on a flat surface until smooth. knead ~5 mins, then cover with plastic wrap and rest for 20 mins 4. knead the dough for 3-4 mins, then cover and rest for 20 mins 5. brush the surface of a large plate with veg oil. roll the dough ball into a log shape and cut into 6 equal portions. place the logs on the plate and brush them with oil until all sides covered. cover the plate with plastic wrap and let rest at room temp for at least 1 hour, up to 12 hours 6. using a rolling pin, take one log and flatten it out into a rectangular shape. use a chopstick to make an indentation along the center of the dough, lengthwise 7. hold each end of the noodle strip and gently pull until it starts to lengthen. flick the dough downwards and let it hit the surface while pulling. once it reaches your desired thickness, separate the noodles along the middle line. you can keep them in a loop or cut them. repeat until all are made into noodles 9. bring a pot of water to a boil and cook noodles for ~2-3 mins 10. combine all sauce ingredients in a large bowl and toss noodles. garnish with chili crisp, radishes, scallions and cilantro

  1. First of all, a warm welcome to everyone who’s here from @cupofjo! If you’d like to leave a comment and tell me what you’re currently reading, I’d love to get to know you! 📚 Second of all, raise your hand if you watched a lot of television in the early 2000s. 🙋‍♀️ If so, I bet you'll like The Reunion by @authorkaylaolson. Liv Latimer was the star of Girl on the Verge, a teen show with all of the sibling and romance drama you could want. (I absolutely wish I could watch this show.) She always had the biggest crush on her co-star, Ransom, and the upcoming reunion special of the show will bring them crashing back into each other's orbits. In the age of streaming and social media, Liv finds herself a woman on the verge. I loved this sweet and funny story from Kayla, who I was lucky to get to know when I had her at my library's book festival this spring. 📺 It's fun to think about the influences of Girl on the Verge. I picked up on Gilmore Girls, Boy Meets World, and Dawson's Creek. (So glad my big local library still carried the DVDs!) Liv's best friend really loves popcorn and my Gilmore Girls-loving heart is all about an afternoon snack of popcorn and trash candy. I had Milo and Alexis in my head cast as Ransom and Liv. Also, if y'all also love Lorelai and Rory, I highly recommend following @eatinggilmore for food recreations from the show. Now I want to go eat junk food, watch tv, AND read books. Hello, weekend plans. 🍿 #Food #Books #Bookworm #Reading #Librarian #Foodie #BookLove #Bookish #BookPhotography #BookPhotos #BookNerd #EatingReading #FedByBooks #Bookstagram #ATXFood #AustinFood #RomanceNovels #Romance #Romancelandia #RomanceBooks #TheReunion #KaylaOlson @AtriaBooks #GilmoreGirls #DawsonsCreek #BoyMeetsWorld

  2. Like all 90s kids, I remember. In fact, I almost can’t forget because those memories are baked into the internet. At least we don’t have to use our AOL free trial CD to access them anymore. One in a Millennial by @katekennedy is a little less memoir and more oral history of what it was like to be a white thirteen-year-old girl at the turn of the millennium. It’s very chatty, just like her delightful podcast, with more wordplay than you can shake a Hot Dog on a Stick at. (How’d I do, Kate?) I was born two months after Kate Kennedy and lived many of those formative years in Virginia, same as her, so the overlap in our experiences is striking. I didn’t have the luxury of a daybed, though. And the way I wanted one of those inflatable bubble chairs! If lines like “I wasn’t in the market for someone being Contempo Casually cruel (in the name of being honest) about my outfit” make you laugh, then this is also probably up your alley. :D This was the most fun I’ve had making a post in a long time. I loved the excuse to dig up all kinds of childhood ephemera. Some of it is still used in my everyday life, like the Simba mug I keep next to my bathroom sink, and some of it I had to source from my parents, like my beloved Beanie Babies. (And obviously I was a Molly.) While I was making it, I kept thinking about everything else I wish I still had around. My Tamagotchi and Littlest Pet Shop collection. The striped shirt from Limited Too, a prized possession in my wardrobe. A spray bottle of Warm Vanilla Sugar from Bath and Body Works, a scent that I now realize I’m trying to evoke with my current vanilla-based perfume. I love how this picture feels like an I Spy fever dream—an unintentional homage but appreciated all the same. The mini strawberry pop-tarts came from @thebakermama’s recent cookbook, Brilliant Bites, and the cereal is part of a complete and balanced breakfast. I only wish I’d had the requisite glass of orange juice to go in the pic, too. ;) #Food #Books #Bookworm #Reading #Librarian #Foodie #BookLove #Bookish #BookPhotography #BookPhotos #BookNerd #EatingReading #FedByBooks #Bookstagram #ATXFood #AustinFood #OneInAMillennial #BeThereInFive #KateKennedy

  3. Hi everyone! I usually like to do an intro post at the start of the year and frankly, January was a complete wash. But it’s February 1st and it’s a Leap Year (I love a Leap Year) so we’re starting fresh right now. I’m Gretchen and my two favorite things in the world are books and food. Really, who could want anything more? I’m coming up on six years of Eating/Reading in the spring and sometimes it’s wild to me that I’ve stuck with it for this long, but it’s really been the most satisfying hobby I’ve ever had. Here’s a few fun facts about me... -I’m a friendly neighborhood librarian. I didn’t know that I wanted to be a librarian until I was in my early twenties, but when I figured that out, there was no looking back. -I’ve lived in Texas for thirteen years. Never thought I’d become a Texan but I think there’s no denying it at this point. -I had a brief stint as a blogger back in the late 2000s and I miss that period of the internet so much. RIP Google Reader. -This croissant from @therosebakeryatx was excellent. If you ever need any bakery recs in Austin, let me know. -I really enjoy travel, but at this moment, I have no travel plans for the year. I need to change that soon. -I’m holding a copy of Do Your Worst by @rosiedanan in this pic because it was a delightful read from last year and I was regretting that I never did a post for it, so it gets to be featured here. Clark + Riley = 🗡️❤️‍🔥🏰 -I’ve got some fun posts planned for this month. Thanks so much for sticking around! #Food #Books #Bookworm #Reading #Librarian #Foodie #BookLove #Bookish #BookPhotography #BookPhotos #BookNerd #EatingReading #FedByBooks #Bookstagram #ATXFood #AustinFood #Croissant #RoseBakery
