  1. After losing a pregnancy, it’s a cautious optimism that you feel throughout the next. Ultrasounds & appointments that were at first exciting are now daunting. An incoming call from the doctor brings a wave of unease. But, at this stage, this time around, signs now look promising for us, & I want to provide hope to those who may worry that they’ll never experience a viable pregnancy after experiencing a loss. Miscarriage takes on many forms. For some women, it may be fleeting & painless. For others, it’s a long-lasting trauma. In my case, it was a “missed” miscarriage that we faced last July, discovering that our baby, though once alive & with a strong heartbeat, had later died, & remained dead, for days, inside of my body. A missed miscarriage requires you to not only process your loss but to simultaneously make the agonizing decision of how to address the fact that your body isn’t responding. After undergoing a d&c w/ great anxiety, the resultant pathology testing revealed a “partial molar” diagnosis, a rare complication impacting 1 in 1K pregnancies. In even rarer cases, it causes cancer. Blood test after blood test & finally I was in the clear. Molar pregnancies are never viable & the cause is unknown. In nearly every case, miscarriage in general is not caused by something a woman did wrong. & miscarriage is common, possibly 1 in 5 pregnancies common. &, as I faced mine last summer, I knew that from the start. Never once did I feel alone or at fault, thanks to the many women who’ve shared their own personal stories of loss, in spite of how vulnerable it feels to do so. So for those women & others who have yet to face this, I share mine. Don’t go through it on your own. Talk about it. In my case, I received great comfort from friends & family who checked in. & from compassionate nurses & doctors. I am forever grateful. Thank you. &, to my dear & truly darling husband: I’ll never forget how you set your own emotions aside last summer, remaining strong & reasoned in order to so tenderly care for me as I spiraled in fear. I can’t wait to watch you absolutely shine as a dad. I hope this baby of ours is just a little bit like me & a lot like you. Our son.

  3. The rumors are true! I’ll be setting my alarm at 2:30 a.m. indefinitely. I’ve been named the co-anchor of Channel 11 Morning News. Pittsburgh, thank you for embracing me. The early wake-up call is well worth the opportunity to spend the morning with you.  This is a full-circle moment; our longtime viewers may recall that I started my journey at Channel 11 as a reporter for the morning show. I quickly learned that the members of this team are as nice and personable as they appear on air, and I’m privileged to say that I’ll be spending my workdays among good people and friends. I still remember Jenny T. showing me the ropes in the field back in 2018, launching a close friendship that’s remained ever since. Trisha also trained me when I first moved to Pittsburgh, patiently teaching me the difference between the Parkway West outbound and the Parkway East inbound. And then there’s Scott, who’s endured random phone calls from me over the years, as I’ve demanded personalized forecasts for travel or other planning needs. (It is quite nice having a direct line to a meteorologist!)  I’ve worked with so many terrific people in Pittsburgh and am fortunate to have met so many of you, our viewers and community members. Having reported on every shift, within every county and nearly every neighborhood, I’ve told so many of your stories, and I’ve so often been impacted by your resilience and your kindness.  Thanks for trusting Channel 11 and inviting us into your homes. With that said ... I’ll see you tomorrow morning, starting at 4:30 am! Grab your coffee and join us.

  1. ITS WORLD SPINA BIFIDA DAY 🎗 and consequently one year since we received Harpers diagnosis at my 20 week anatomy scan. This day changed our lives forever, and after a great deal of confusion, sorrow, and anger with God, I realize already that we’ve been changed for the better and we’re just getting started. In my curiosity, I turned to instagram to see what life looks like with a kid with spina bifida and specifically remember @mrstristinapon sharing her sweet little girl and feeling HOPE ✨ for the first time that my little girl could still live a full and beautiful life. Thank God for this because 2 days later when we met with the doctor that would operate on her at our local hospital he told me she might be a vegetable, bed ridden, and have no idea I’m her mom. It’s no wonder that 65% of spina bifida babies are terminated… it’s an option he shared with me repeatedly. Thank GOD 🙌🏽 for the brave mamas sharing their (far from easy and not without curve balls) stories and reminding me that SB kids can live BIG lives. Harper is smart, inquisitive, so silly, a little bossy, and so full of life. She will have limitations with her mobility but with her strong spirit I know the sky is the limit for her and I’m here to support her whatever that may look like. No one tells me her limitations but HER. I share this in hopes that it may make its way to someone who needs it. Who needs reminded that the first opinion shouldn’t be the last one if it doesn’t feel right because when we met our doctor at CHOP, I knew we were in the right hands without a doubt in my mind. He told me that he would LOVE to operate on her and believes she'll be a success story. Forever grateful for that team. With love, Harper’s mom #spinabifida #soinabifidastrong #soinabifidaawareness #soinabifidababy
