  1. The culture & cuisine of Peru is captivating. When I visited over a decade ago, I was entranced by the seafood dishes, specifically the ceviche with its use of corn and potato, the principal crop of the country. The vibrant colors, both in fabrics and dishes, mesmerized. I always thought Peruvian cuisine was so under-represented in Philly and surrounding areas, until finally a few places popped up in recent years. In the last month, a truly authentic one has opened in @collingswoodnj called @kikos_collingswood, a BYOB that respects tradition and which is owned by the wonderful Cervantes family (1st time restaurateurs), who handle both the front and back of house. Chef Kiko (who has a background in culinary) mans the kitchen while Carlos is on the floor as well as crafting plates from his heritage (he’s also part Chilean), with their children and relatives serving plates with huge smiles. The hospitality is so genuine that it exudes happiness, because they’re truly excited to serve and share their culture’s unique food. The classic ceviche with meaty, textural Corvina fish is outstanding, especially with the Canchas, the large crispy, fried Corn kernels that also taste great on their own with a beer. Sweet potato also appears, adding color and contrast to the subtle heat. Peppers are also very prevalent in Peruvian cooking, and the use of yellow pepper (Ají Amarillo) in another ceviche rendition adds additional layers of color and creaminess. You’ll find that same bright yellow in the Causa, another hearty staple that is best described as mini casseroles with layers of potato sandwiched with a filling. Kiko’s causa is large (shareable as an appetizer), beautifully presented, and served cold, with puréed potatoes seasoned with ají amarillo paste and lime juice and stuffed with chicken salad, mayo, peas and carrots...   1. Finally recovered from whatever illness I had last week 🤧 and ready to get back to trying more yummy food!! Excited to share my visit to The Bayou Bar & Grill in Manayunk. I never venture out there all too often which is a mistake since there is SO much good stuff out there. The Bayou is a little homey bar (with 2 floors of bar upstairs!) and the staff were amazing. Funny and super accommodating! They have great bar food as well. The old bay wings were the favorite of the night and the loaded fries were HUGE and so cheesy. A great place to hang out in Manayunk! Check them out for .25 cent wings (🤯) on Monday & Tuesday starting at 4 pm or their Happy Hour on Wednesday-Friday, 4-7pm for half off apps & $5 Voodoo Ranger draft!! 🐊

  2. @umaiumai_phl in Fairmount is quite possibly my favorite sushi restaurant in the city, so when I saw they opened a new location in Queen Village (@umaiumai_qv) a few months ago, I HAD to go. This one is sleek and a bit more open with more room for seating. Also, they just launched an awesome happy hour deal M-F 5-6:30pm. $5 drinks, $6 wine, $5 gyoza + more!! The staff is wonderful and truly make sure you are taken care of. I broke my “dry January” because I was craving a lychee martini and I’m so glad I did because it was incredible. As for food, they have many of the same dishes as the other location, but they’re also trying out some new and exciting things as well. The Saltwater Eel Crispy Tot was phenomenal and you definitely need more than 1. The sushi never misses, however I have to shoutout the Pingu Roll & Hotate Nigiri. The hotate might have been the best I ever had 🤩 Thanks for having me, can’t wait to come back and try more of the entrees! And the food was INCREDIBLE, literally everything we got was delicious. The focaccia & that whipped butter was to die for 🤤 their French onion soup is insane and I loved the addition of roasted grapes to the duck pappardelle.
