  2. Back when I was a local reporter and journalist in Houston, something I always struggled to explain to folks — especially newcomers — is how big this place actually is. Houston is basically just a little bit smaller than Albania. The entire country. A country that contains 74 different municipalities. Its capital city, Tirana, is home to over 700,000 people. That’s about all I know about Albania; honestly it looks gorgeous and definitely has better beaches and I’d love to visit. But the mind boggles when thinking about the vast urban sprawl that is the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area — and this is realistically what we’re talking about when we talk about Houston, because we’re also talking about Pasadena, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, all the places we drive and commute to across the Greater Houston region every day. Trust me: When I was the food critic for the Houston Press, people would complain bitterly that I hadn’t recently reviewed any restaurants in Pearland or Cypress or Kingwood…and I was writing for the HOUSTON Press. So when we talk about Houston, it’s shorthand for the 7.9 million people who live within these 10,000 square miles. Which also means you could fit 10,000 Monacos inside Houston. What else is smaller than Houston? Here’s a non-exhaustive list.
