  1. Portugal often feels strangely outdated. Not just metaphorically. I mean literally. Men still laying centuries-old cobblestone streets by hand. Markets instead of self-checkouts. Cash-only signs. Grandmothers watching the street better than any CCTV. Sunday disappearing into family lunches. To someone who grew up in Northern Europe… it can all seem inefficient. Slow. Old-fashioned. Like it should have been modernised years ago. That’s exactly what I thought too. Until I realised… Portugal isn’t trying to find the cheapest modern way to replace something. It would rather restore it. Not because it’s easier. Because it’s worth keeping. Those men laying cobblestones aren’t just building a street. They’re preserving a craft that is quietly disappearing across Europe. Every stone is placed by someone who spent years learning a skill that many countries no longer teach. In much of Northern Europe, when something gets old… it’s often replaced. In Portugal…it’s repaired. Restored. Cared for. And somehow, that same mindset shows up everywhere. In the cafés where nobody rushes you. In neighbourhoods where people still know each other. In local markets where conversations matter as the shopping. In long lunches that nobody wants to end. Modern life has become incredibly efficient. But somewhere along the way…many places became efficientand boring after removing the human part too. Portugal chose a different path. People before productivity. Craft before convenience. Restoration before replacement. Presence before pressure. When I first moved here from Finland… it felt slow. Now it feels intentional. Important. Because maybe the best things in life were never supposed to be optimised. Maybe they were supposed to be preserved. That’s why Portugal doesn’t just look different. It feels different. Not because it’s behind the times. But because it refused to leave everything beautiful behind. #portugal

  2. 🔹 Visited Lisbon as a tourist and bought these azulejos? Shame on you, they are stolen from someone’s wall. I know… maybe that sounds harsh. But hear me out. 💙 People come to Lisbon, fall in love with the blue tiles, take photos of every façade… then walk into flea markets and buy “authentic old azulejos” as souvenirs. It feels innocent. It feels cultural. It feels like taking a piece of Portugal home. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: 💠 Many of those tiles didn’t come from factories or workshops. They came from buildings. From staircases. From façades people still walk past every day. Not ruins. Not abandoned places. A real street. A real façade. A real neighbourhood. That “beautiful vintage tile” might be the exact square missing from someone’s doorway right now. ❇️ Azulejos aren’t decoration here. They’re memory. They’re identity. They’re why a random street corner feels like art. They’re why Lisbon feels timeless. And what makes it worse… the most “authentic-looking” ones are often the most suspicious. Some sellers will tell you: “It’s salvaged.” “It’s legal.” “It’s from demolitions.” Maybe. But if there’s no origin, no story, no documentation… then it’s not heritage. It’s just a pretty clue. ⏹️ If you love Portugal, the best way to show it isn’t stealing pieces home. It’s leaving them where they belong, on Portuguese walls, in Portuguese streets, under Portuguese sun. If you want azulejo art, there are beautiful ethical ways: Modern handmade tiles Prints Workshops to paint yourself Local artists keeping the tradition alive ✨ Some countries protect culture in museums. Portugal lets you walk inside it every day. And that’s worth protecting. So if you ever bought one… I’m not judging you. Most people genuinely don’t know. But now you do. And if this made you pause for even a second… that already matters. #portugal

  3. China has cameras everywhere. Portugal has balcony ladies. Avós, CCTia-V:s. When I first moved to Portugal, I thought these ladies were just sitting outside. Drinking coffee. Talking to neighbours. Checking their laundry in balcony every 5mins. Watching the street for fun. Doing absolutely nothing. I was wrong. Realized it quite quickly. They are working. Full-time. No salary. No uniform. No CCTV screens. But somehow…they know everything. Who just moved in. Who came home at 3am. Whose car is parked where it shouldn’t be. Which neighbour is having visitors. Who hasn’t been seen for a few days. Which delivery guy comes every morning. And somehow they notice all of this while continuing their conversation like nothing happened. You can walk down the same street for a few months… and eventually realise there is always one balcony that seems to know more than everyone else. At first I found it funny. Then I learned something very quickly: Be nice to the balcony ladies. Say bom dia. Smile. Stop for a little chat. Because one day you might need to know something… and they’ve probably already seen it. But honestly… the longer I live in Portugal, the more I appreciate this. Because they’re not really surveillance cameras. They’re part of the neighbourhood. They know the people. They notice when something changes. They notice when someone needs help. They remember things that happened 20 years ago. They’ve watched children grow up. They know which house belongs to which family. And when you become part of that street… you slowly become part of their little information network too. It’s one of those things I completely misunderstood when I first arrived. I thought Portugal was just old-fashioned. Now I realise…sometimes people are better than technology. And maybe that’s why Portuguese neighbourhoods can feel so alive. You don’t just live next to people. People actually notice you. So yes…China can have its cameras. I’ll take Dona Maria on the balcony. If you’ve lived in Portugal, you already know exactly who I’m talking about. And if you haven’t…remember: always say bom dia to the balcony. Always, just say it and thank me later.

E isso, reconforta-me. 📸 @padragram

Vamos a isto? 😄 Duração: 20 min (4 Pessoas) Ingredientes: 2 Cebolas 5 Dentes de Alho 2 Alhos Franceses 500g Tofu 500g Batata Palha 100ml de Leite Vegetal (Utilizei de Soja) 2 Colheres Sopa de Alga Nori (Opcional) q.b. Sal, Pimenta, Curcuma, Pimentão Doce e Salsa Fresca Procedimento: 1 - Cortar a cebola e o alho francês em juliana, picar o alho e a alga. #tofu #leek #chips #potatoes #tofurecipes #portuguesefood #abras #alho #alhofrances #batatapalha #algas #nori #legumes #simonscuisine
